Anyone picked up an Optio S4i yet?

Thanks for offering to try some sample pics!

Mind if I put in a "wish list"?? If it's not very long?

1) Most useful of all would be: photo at night, in a room that's not lit very brightly, ISO 100 and also 400, with the flash OFF. That would show how much noise there is in low-light conditions (a concern - and don't expect a super great photo), and also how well it focusses in low-light. Some people have demo'd these with flash "on", which destroys the whole test process.

2) Daylight, ISO 100, and medium-distance (portrait distance) and also far (landscape, with nothing closeby). This would show sharpness, as well as noise levels.

If that's too many photos, then just dark room/400/flash off as well as daylight/100/near and far would be great too. Jpeg medium-high or high would be good, depending on where you can post them (image size)

Hope that's not asking too much! Thanks too!

Oops, I meant for the second one wish-photo, "medium distance = snapshot distance" (8-10 ft), not "portrait distance." Pardon me!

Hi Cmo1,

Could you post a picture of the cradle and the transfomer?
I would like to get an idea how big they are.

If they are big & bulky I may opt to go with the S4 since it only has a one piece charger and is easier to take on a trip.

Thanks in advance.

John
The battery is charging right now. The cradle is cool because it
has a slot to charge a spare battery when your camera isnt in the
slot!

I will take some pics today and post them up asap.

Peace.

I'm getting nervous with these online dealers..
I notice that both Ritz Camera and B&H Photo are listing this
digicam as being in stock. I'm anxious to hear what people think
of that camera. Does anyone have one yet and would you mind
posting an image or two?

I must say that i'm very impressed with Wolf Camera, I ordered an S4i from them on Sunday Night and it should arrive tomorrow. Anyway, I'll try to post some pictures once I get mine up and running but until then does anyone have sample pictures they've taken of any kind yet? I've been waiting a while for this camera and I really just want to see a sample picture other than the ones on the photo websites. Thanks

And By the Way, this is my first post so I'll just give a general hello to everyone.

I just picked up my S4i today at Ritz Camera and have been playing with it ever since. So far I like it a lot. I'll take a try at posting the images you asked for. I haven't done this before, so I hope it works. If you have any questions about the camera or these photos, please ask.

Thanks for the info.

I'm fond of shooting available light photos (no flash), and
sometimes you need the extra sensitivity in poorly lighted interior
conditions: a moderately lighted living room, a night club, a
candle lit dinner, etc.
What's the noise level like at ISO 400?

Thanks for the pictures.

I somewhat doubt it, but could you put the camera in the cradle backwards so that you could display pictures while it is charging? Not a teribly useful feature but I know the Casio's can do it so maybe Pentax followed suit.

Pictures of charger are great. But, I'm rather disappointed. Such a small camera. Such a large charger.

Question: is the charger a "world-wide" charger?

Second, quesition. Specs say there is an optional A/C adaptor. Has any one seen one? Is it a "world-wide" adaptor? And, does the A/C adaptor charge the battery that is inside the camera?

Thanks.

I can't decide between a S4i and a Sony T-1 (looking for something very portable).

Just about every S4 image I've seen on the net shows the lens being very soft on the left hand side.

What is the S4i like with regards to this, is the problem fixed ?

Anyone compared the Sony T-1 to the S4i ?

Yes it is a dual voltage charger 110v-240v.

The AC Adapter is a cord that connects the camera directly into a wall socket thus not requiring the use of the cradle-charger. The charger is very light..no heavier than a cigarette lighter.

The Sony T-1 has better image quality then the S4 (and probably the S4i) and it's LCD screen is bigger and better and it probably is faster too.
But it is more expensive, and it has no viewfinder (dealbreaker for me).

I had the chance "to pick it up" yesterday, but I put it back down and didn't buy it -- at least for now. I don't know if anyone else has had the feeling that somehow the build quality isn't up to par with the S and the S4? Is it the sticker they've stuck on it that gives this feeling?

Or may be it was the presence of that black S4 that made me think twice...

In any case, it's just a tiny bit thicker than the S and the S4. It's a bit different on the lens inscriptions too.

What would you do? Pick the black S4, or go for the S4i?

No you can't put it in backwards, and although I didn't try it, I don't think the camera can be powered up while charging. The cradle you is just a charger, it does not connect to the PC. Someone commented that he thought the charger was big. It's only an inch or so longer than the camera. The width is several inches for 2 reasons: One, because it can charge a lone battery which must lie flat (see photos), and 2 because the camera merely sits in the charger (no plug in connector) which would tip over if it didn't have a stable base.

Here are some sample pics. I'm just an amateur so the pics might not show the cam's full potential. Used ISO 200 and 400 for the first and second wine bottle shots respectively. Others are just some macro/super macro shots. The other night picture was taken using the "night" feature.

The ISO 50 shots seem okay but the ISO 400 looks pretty noisy. Or did you resize and compress these a lot?

Are you sure that the A/C adaptor will charge the battery in the camera? Some cameras do this and others do not. It would be useful to know.

The sample pics do not look very good. I had thought about picking up a s4i but I'll stick with my s4. It's not worth the upgrade considering the minimal amount of changes made. Anyone else have any sample pics taken with the s4i?

Trying to like digital but still in love with my Contax T3

Hello- This is my first post. I am looking to purchase the Pentax s4i as a gift for my boyfriend. He rants and raves about anything that is unique in size and compatability. I figured he would love this- ( Does it really fit into an Altoid Tin? ) In either case, Njord: I know you are having difficulties with the softness of your pictures with the s4- Has anyone noticed any of these problems with the s4i?... I'd like to buy one at Dataviz (on 40th and 5thave) this friday- (Thank you for that tip, by the way, Skagen & cmo1) The sales ppl were as friendly and helpful as you mentioned and they didn't treat me like a idiot, as most other electronic stores do when a woman walks in)

Also, does anyone know of another camera that is the exact same size and weight as the Pentax with all of the same features? I've pretty much decided on it, but if there is something else that is better, i'd love to hear it. Perhaps the Canon s410 (or s 500) Elph? (You'd think it was a lot smaller based on the name, but it's really not)

Last but not least, do you think that the tiny size of the s4i makes it flimsy and "fragile"..?
I'm getting very worried about the softness I see on the left side
of quite a few of my pictures (actually, all the pictures that are
taken with low aperture value, ie. 2.6). It's clearly not the usual
corner softness because it basically extends over the first third
of the pictures, and the right corners of the pic (and more
generally the right side of the pic) are devoid of that particular
softness.

I have made a page with pics and crops to illustrate that :
http://www.geocities.com/njord_fr/

I'd like it very much if you could tell me whether you have noticed
the same problem with your own Optio S or S4. I need to know
whether my Optio S4 is defective or whether it is a "feature" of
the lens. I've just bought my Optio S4, and I've only got a very
few days left to have it exchanged for another digicam. So I really
depend on you all to determine if I must go for another Optio S4 or
do something else.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Yann.
