Hello, I am very new here, and I have read a lot about the above mentioned cameras, they happen to be the only two that I like and consider as a definite buy, please could you advise me which should I buy!
Thank you very much!

Hi Svetlana

That's a very tough question to answer. From my past experience with posts like this I think the key question is what will be your main use for the camera. Phil does rate the canon higher but that is one man's opinion. What will be your major uses for the camera? If you have a local shop, try both to see which you like. See if you could take pics with both cameras with your own memory, take that home and compare you results...

hi svetlana

I chose the f700 since the price was cheaper, much much smaller and lighter

easier to use access menu's, and better video (30 fps 640x480)

i did like the s50 , because it used CF cards ,but i got over it very quickly

I haven't personally tested either camera so my comments are based solely on what I have read.

I have an admitted Canon bias but in this case, I think the F700 may be a better choice.

First of all, in this particular case, I do not agree with Phil's review. He seemed to have a very high expectation for the new Fuji sensor and when it didn't perform to his expectations, it seemed like he was unusually biased against the camera.

Also, at the time of it's release, the F700 was priced a little high. The street price has since come down and lot and the F700 is now a fairly descent buy.

Based on what I've read, the F700 really seems to excel in several critical areas:

1. Shutter response - the F700 clobbers, and I mean clobbers, the Canon S50 in speed. Almost twice as fast. Check out the full autofocus numbers on the imaging-resources web site.

F700 full auto-focus speed - .55/.61 sec
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/F700/F7DATA.HTM

S50 full auto-focus speed - 1.07 - 1.10 sec
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/CS50/CS50A7.HTM

2. Low light performance - here's where the F700 really shines. You can take indoor available light pics with the it, quite similar to DSLRS! (At least based on what I've read.) The F700 auto mode varies ISO from 100-800! No other digicam to my knowledge does this and it has a 1600 ISO setting in program mode (only 2 meg pictures but that's fine for smaller prints and web use).

In comparison, the highest ISO setting for the S50 is 400 (although the claim is that the Canon ISO settings are almost a stop faster than others).

The high ISO pics of the F700 seem pretty good to me. You can find them on this site or at imaging-resources site.

To top it off, the F700 is a lot smaller (something I like, you can just put it in your pocket and take it anywhere).

Of course the proof of the pudding is to test it yourself and see what you think.

Good luck.

I think both are good cameras and it depends on your needs. Is size most important for you? Are you going to be taking shots mostly in daylight? Are you goign to print pictures in big sizes?

Thank you all very much for your advices ! I must say that I am not a pro in photography, I am just lucky sometimes to catch some unusual things with my old Samsung Vega 77 which is a film camera, but times are as they are rightnow - it is due to be upgraded to digital, I love the idea of great lenses and hotshoes but - to face the reality, as much as I would like to own all the proper attributes to a camera, with me they may as well stay as attributes for a long time, I need utility, something I can carry around, drop into a pocket and pass security if I need to ( talking of concerts per say), something that will help me make pictures when I am out on the feild doing historic reanactment and so on...

Printing big - probably not, even though it is a nice option... I fell in love with Fuji F700 the moment I saw it, but I liked canon for a while too, what worries me in F700 is the fact that I have read a lot about it's blurriness, and the fact that it has two connector ports which are not protected by anything at all...

Canon on the contrary I have heard has a better proccessor, has more megapixels, BUT here is what I do not like -

I do not like the system of powering off having to slide the thing over the lens, in my opinion that is just begging to be broken by an awkward move, and it is heavy...

SO the botom Line - I still do not know which trade off is best for me... and considering it will be my first camera...

Thank you all for advice, if you have more to say about it - I still have a day to make up my mind

If you are not going for the increased resolution and you like the Fuji colors, I would say go for the F700. It is a very fast camera and you will be able to capture better night shots due to the extra ISO sensitivity. Also you get full blow movie mode.

I agree about the S50 sliding door.. I think that's probably its weakest point, in its exterior design.

Sound like you have gotten good advice. I posted my opinion on the Cannon thread.

if the connector ports are a major decision factor just get the waterproof case for the f700!

but seriously, it is really a non issue. also i do not think that the pics are any more blurry than any other digicam. the camera has exceptional focussing ability.

i do find that on the screen the 6mp pix look better if sharpened and resized to 3mp but for printing, not.

I have a nikon 5000 i will sell you but compared to the fuji700 it is a piece of junk, IMHO.

good luck whatever you decide, dont forget to share your pics w/us here.

Just a few corrections.ISO 1600 is only available at 1mp which should yield decent/good? 4"x6" prints. Also ISO 800 on the Fuji is like Iso 640 on the Canon(this is just my conclusion based on some of Phil's reviews I saw a few months ago)and ISO 200 on F700 should be about ISO80(on a normal camera)or ISO 50 on the underrated Canons. So all you really get is about one stop more sensitivity on the Fuji for low light shots.

I chose the F700 mainly for it's speed(especially the start-up time),the burst mode and the movie mode.If these are not important to you maybe you should go for the canon:more resolution and cleaner images at iso 50&100(no noise, less compression).
