1st try new studio - can retouching Gods work their magic?

I've just setup a studio with Alien Bees, Digital Rebel shooting in
RAW, converting with C1.

In way over my head.

Trying to figure out Photoshop CS - but having trouble even with
getting Adobe Gamma Wizard to work (view Single Gamma slider
doesn't change anything when I move it).

I've been lurking a while - and am curious what you Gods of
retouching could do to color balance, curves, etc. to bring out
this quick shot of my wife.

Also, curious if anyone knows of a good book on makeup for
photography.

My wife does nuclear medicine, not modelling, but she is going to
be my primary model (if I can talk her into it - and I think a few
photos that stand out will help get her interested)

Thanks.

C1 and PS CS have that effect on people, don't worry ... it gets better. :) Got off from work, not tired enough to sleep so took a few minutes and played with this a bit. Didn't go for a straight correction, thought I'd try playing a bit with the high key nature of the photo. First time I've ever tried something like this with high key image. Was fun, need to do this more often. :)

Thanks,

What I did:

1) Fixed levels by increasing contrast. It looked a little flat before.
2) The color balance is fine. The colors were just a little dull. So I increased
saturation slightly bringing out the skin tone and lips.

3) Created a gaussian blur layer and erased areas of the skin. I try to use a low opacity on the erase so as not to over do it.
4) Cloned out the shiny hot spots on her face.
5) Added some unsharpen mask to bring out the eyes, lips and hair.
Thanks

I thinki Vikki's version has a very natural look to it... my version screams retouched... but I thought I'd post it anyway..

i think your version looks similar to vikki's

you duplicated what i feel to be the main accomplishment of her retouch which is a nice even skintone throughout the whole face

Your retouch looks like there was a very smart make-up artist on the shoot... and a photog. with a good lighting set up.

Excellent; invisible.

Isn't it amazing what these mages have done with your composition? Of course, you started them off with a pretty good picture, and a wonderful model. Her expression conveys the impression of a woman who is unaware of her beauty, which makes her even more captivating. I think that's why so many have taken the time to work on her portrait.

There's been many wonderful retouches, and I'd suggest you might make a montage of them and print it out for your bride. If you do, put the image by Vikki at the center. Imho, she's the High Priestess of the Forum. She goes beyond mere technical issues, and reinterpretspictures, to show unseen dimensions, as she's done here.

I promised Wes I would post my steps, but I found a nice tutorial that may be helpful (and save me the writing).
I don't consider myself an expert, but I'll add my tips and thoughts here:

Gaussian blur or Dust & Scratches over the entire image is not retouching, it is an effect. Retouching is done selectively (with possibly the exception of color adjustments).

Keep textures. Nothing stands out more than a blurred area, especially around the eyes.

The Smudge tool should be avoided whenever possible (unless you're an expert, and can work with a 1 pixel brush).

Unless you are doing an extreme makeover, what you've done should not be visible.

This tutorial has a very nice list of things to look for when considering retouching. It's worth a read.
