Yep, that'd be me, above.

Yesterday, it was nicely cloudy out, a little bit of haze. A person could have taken a photograph of a burning toxic waste dump, and it would have looked good. Only problem was, well it was Friday, and I got this paycheck jones, ya see. There are people who like me to be at work when everybody else is.

Yesterday, I looked at the weather report, online, for today. It said partly cloudy. I said "groan". See around here in the San Francisco Bay Area, "partly cloudy" seems to be a euphemism for "good luck finding a cloud, it's probably cloudy SOMEPLACE on Earth, though." Yeah, I knew what it meant. Still, I wanted to get out. I had to get out.

I set my clock radio for real predawn early today, and probably listened for 45 minutes to being told "sunny with a chance of high clouds later today". Give me some news.

Still, I wanted to get out. So I didn't let the bad weather stop me.

Another day in paradise. (ADIP)

And this is my kit, below. Except for the digital item in my hands you can't really see.

It was a good day to photograph! Nice self portrait. Has a western gunfight feel to it. :-]

Nice photo Ed! :-)

I specially like your self portrait and how you cropped it. But what's wrong with you??!! Complaining that you have no clouds? Tell that to those who have floodings now... you spoiled brat! .....hehehehe. :-D

Sorry if the poetry is getting old...but this pic of you brings this to mind...

I am the king of all, and of nothing. Your eyes see a barren land and, perhaps, a few haggard, stunted trees. You cannot perceive my realm, for you do not wander as I do. Unlike as storm and calm, you and I. In one area, one dwelling you live and think your life very full indeed. This is why you cannot understand how very much richer mine is. I, who have no permanent abode, consider the world, in its entirety, my home. If none of it is truly mine, it is better to think of all of it as my domain. Even if it is no more substantial than a poor wanderer's dream.

P.S. Great shots BTW!

Thanks for the poetry, Liz! I love it and it goes so WELL with the photo! Now there's a challenge...to post photos with 'matching' poems...hmmmm.

What on earth are you saying? Is cloudy good? Bad? The lack of clouds is bad weather?

Hi Ed,

I like the curves in your self portrait.

Well you are complaining about the weather, but the senery seems wonderfull to me, all those noce round curves and lines.

jacques.

Hi Nite,

Yeah, it was a good day for photography at certain times and places. Thanks for the compliment on the self portrait. I've been known to take one or two.

Ah, the "western gunfight feel", must be due to my photographers shooting hat. When I wear it, the hill folk know I'm dead serious. Haven't been messed with yet. Not even when I have to drive through people herding cattle down the road. (Don't think it doesn't happen!)

True regards,

Ed

Petra, thank you for the compliments. I always appreciate them.

Floods are terrible things, truly. I well know that and wouldn't wish one on anyone. And when we get too much rain here, the ground saturates and homes get demolished in mudslides.

Notes on the California climate:

Not especially appreciated (even among residents), but a large percentage of California is desert, with a rainy season. The area I live in is included in that.

We are fortunate because the rainy season happens during winter, and a snowpack builds up in the mountains. As it melts, water for farming, for population, for industry is supplied to the state. Not too many years back we had about five years in a row of severe drought. The rainy season wasn't. We had to restrict our water usage, green things died. Animals that survived on the green things diminished.

In the few years since then, our winters have had more rain, one winter, too much. And we have had some rain this year, but all in all, not nearly enough. There's been some snow, but we don't have much of a snow pack. Right now, as I look out the window, the sky is unremitting blue, it is unseasonably warm. It feels good, people like it, it hurts us.

Possibly, you have read something about the California power problems. There is not enough, rates are going up tremendously, there are 'rolling blackouts' while power companies try to cope with there not being enough. I've only been hit by one, lasted about 90 minutes, some people have been hit by two or three. There is no warning, they usually last for 90 to 120 minutes. Hospitals have their own power supplies, but a few nursing home patients have been trapped in elevators. There is no warning.

I'll tie the rain and power together with this: much of our power is hydroelectric.

I was having fun with my writing, as you know I like to do. And I truly understand that you were not taking me to task. You would not do that, you are my friend, and I'm not taking you to task either.

Yep, I was being a trifle photographically selfish with my 'lament'. I believe we both understand that is part of my fun. I just thought I'd pass on that there are some deeper problems here. Mine might be related, but in comparison, they are just an itch.

Unremitting hugs,

Ed

Thanks for the poem, thanks for being you.

Hi Mark,

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. Less good weather is more photographically interesting. Clouds add interest and drama. Any scene photographed with a pure blue sky, may be well on its way to being a 'snapshot'.

Where photography is concerned, weather that feels pleasant can be bad, weather that feels unpleasant can be good indeed.

Regards,
Ed

Hi Jacques,

The curves here, the tangental sunlight, were elements that I wanted to do something with. I've taken self portraits before; to me, one more seemed to fit the bill.

In fact, right now our weather is unseasonably dry. There is the distinct chance that we will pay for it later on with less water than is needed, and less hydroelectric power.

California has some truly wonderful scenery, and I am very fortunate to have some of it close at hand. But, for photography, our skys are generally terrible. It is not that unusual to see a photograph taken in California that is well composed, has very dramatic scenery that anyone would envy, but the photograph has been turned into a 'snapshot' by the unwaveringly blue sky. Of course, solid grey skys have the same problem.

I try to make the most of my particular situation by getting up before dawn when I can, and letting the sunrise find me in someplace that is interesting.

Everything is a learning experience.

Continuing regards,

Ed

Ed, you read me like a book! :-)

I also understand your wish for rain (and clouds) since I know how it feels when the weather just isn't working with you. Don't forget I was complaining for months that we didn't get any snow... :-D

I like the storytelling feel to this one, Ed...using the power of your always formidable words with nicely composed, horizontal pictures of you and your kit.

Ironically, I've been in your neck of the woods a number of times for business in the last three months of 2000...but the first time I actually took a day off for photography, it poured. Poured buckets. It was all I could do to keep the camera from getting soaked. Did get some nice shots of Muir Woods, but that was it.

So I'll settle for some cloudless skies next time I'm there. :-)

Hi Robert,

I do enjoy playing in this forum a little bit from time to time. I'm glad that you liked the things I did on this. Thank you.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience, evidently we need to retarget our clouds. But on a positive note, it looks like there might be some rain this coming Friday through next Monday. Don't know if I'll do anything with it, but (despite your unfortunate experience) we need rain REAL BAD.

My very best regards,

Ed

Thanks Furrukh. Well, this IS the west, you know. A few more miles further west and I would have been wearing a wetsuit!

Hmmm, I sense that you kidding me about the weather. Oh well. I CAN easily understand that this weather is probably the envy of the country (I lived near Chicago when I was young), but we need rain now, real bad. fortunately, some may be coming this weekend.

Ed
