Read your camera manuals? So many questions could be answered if people would just consult the manual! "How do I set shutter speeds manually?" "How do I change the WB on my 828?"
Come on people, read your manuals!

I played aroudn with the auto setting after reading the instructions about the ferrite core etc... for the 717 and then that night read the manual. Its really easy and short. Don't know why more people dont read it.

I read the online version long before I even get the camera. Then I typically read the manual that comes with the camera too the day I get it. One really does themselves a disfavor by just jumping in. You waste time and are less effective longer than if one just reads the manual and becomes acquainted with every feature the camera has to offer.

in this case, i think that 'circle with X' isnt shown appropriately in the manual (its colored differently), that may have caused the confusion.

but indeed its always sensible to try something out yourselves before asking for help, but then again,

how many of us havent been as curious, inquisitive, and protective as little children are about precious new toys. not too many i hope, else this forum wouldnt be what it is today, at 600,000 messages.

ciao.

first of all I was under the impression that no question is a stupid question... I have learned sooo much here and it's because of quick responses from helpful happy people... YES, people should read the manual but why condemn them for asking the question... If you don't want to respond to questions that are answered in the manual then don't respond ...but starting a thread and saying..."hey everyone, here's a link to someone who wasted my time and hasn't read his manual. He asked a stupid question!!!"

nothing good can come from this ...just hard feelings and probably an individual who will be very very reserved about posting here in the future.

I, for one, feel that any question is a good question...I rely on my stupid questions on a daily basis...my own personal survival technique......hehehehe

one last point to make....WHAT IF THE PERSON IS ILLITERATE... and is truely looking for help... let's try to help everyone... you never know when you'll need it in return.

play nice boys and girls and take a pic or two

I think there are definitely such a thing as stupid questions. Nice saying though.

YES, people should
read the manual but why condemn them for asking the question
Who's condemning? All I'm saying is people can answer their own questions often times if they just read the manual.

... If
you don't want to respond to questions that are answered in the
manual then don't respond ...but starting a thread and
saying..."hey everyone, here's a link to someone who wasted my time

I do respond sometimes and he didn't waste my time as I didn't respond to him.

Sure it can, people can read their manuals and learn more than they ever thought possible about their cameras

If they are illiterate then how could they read anything in this forum???

I've read my manual probably 10 times or more. Still there's things in the manual that aren't explained properly or not at all. For instance, I've had my 717 for about 3 months now and shortly after I bought it, I couldn't figure out what that blue domed shaped icon was in the lower right hand corner of the lcd screen. A quick question on this forum answered it promptly. It was the jog dial icon. I've since seen this same question asked about half a dozen times. The point is that no question is too simple. There's just too many good folks on STF to ignore any question, no matter how obvious the answer is to you.

go here: http://www.shawn64.com/mochastorage/cgtn.html

it's frequently linked to from the http://www.megatokyo.com forums.

(and to those who are gonna flame joe - our real pet peeve shouldn't be people who haven't read the manual - it should be people who don't use the forum search. the FIRST person to ask a 'dumb' question isn't dumb at all. the FIFTH is: what's that little hand mean again? can i put a non-sony flash on my hotshoe? will my 62,000 volt flash be bad for my camera? can sony make cameras that take real pictures? what's a good tripod? what's a good flash?)

bottomline:

if ya want to avoid a n00b, avoid large forums and replying to obvious n00by messages ! lol

But now reading the HVL-F32X flash manual it says on page 15: Be sure that the “Hot Shoe” is set to OFF in the “SET UP” setting. And under trouble shooting on page 28 it reads: Make sure that the “Hot Shoe” on the digital still camera is not set to OFF. The exact opposite.

Anyway, since the F32X doesn’t have a hot shoe contact but a several other contacts instead, the hot shoe setting in the camera should be set to OFF in order for the F32X to work. It should be set to on for flashes that actually do have a real hot shoe contact in the centre.

This particular manual leaves a lot to be desired. The flash on the other hand is great.
