Hey guys, yesterday I enjoyed some perfect Perth (Australian) weather. I went out to a recreation/conservation reserve with a particular project theme in mind. Below are my 'keepers'.

Black and white conversion done in C1, borders/framing in Photoshop CS. Comments and criticism welcome. Enjoy :)

What B&W method you used to convert the images in C1? I have used the C1 B&W profile that is available at http://www.outbackphoto.com , but some times it poduces a bit gainy sky... your's seemed to be very smooth. (Well thats also an exposure issue... but lets deal with the B&W part here).

I really like the depth of tones that B&W from RAW in C1 produces. How did you find it compared to B&W conversion in PS?

I used that same B&W profile you mentioned. The lack of grain came from using mainly ISO 200 and a steady hand.

You pretty much answered the comparison between C1 and PS CS for me! C1 provides much richer tones and I prefer the contrast control of C1 as well. I tend to also use the colour cast correction quite a lot, as by setting this to green, yellow or red areas provides a similar effect as using a green, yellow, orange, red or yellow-green filter on the end of your lens ;)

Thanks for posting and sharing the pictures. Perfect weather gives you a tough job with contrast - you've done well.

It may be my poor viewing conditions (some daylight on my monitor at this time of the morning) but a couple of these look a little dark to me, especially the last two/one (spot the difference ;-) ).

Have you printed any B/W shots? I'm interested in peoples experience with different printers and how well they cope with B/W. It seems to be a difficult area for most inkjets.

Thanks again - enjoy the weather, and your camera.

Thanks :)

Yeh, there's one image that is real dark. That was on purpose... just to give the sense that I was in the shade of this huge wheel with just a hint of sunlight reaching the top half of it. I suppose I could lighten it up a little though...

I never print out my photos at home. I get them done at a photo-lab. I've only got 3 B&W's printed so far and they were pretty average. But I think that was because they were printed on gloss paper as opposed to matte like I asked!

Currently a student and not much in the way of funds... I have HEAPS of images banked up, waiting to be printed!

That will change (funds I mean), and you'll love having control over your own printing - you even get to choose matte if you want it!

Just make sure you back up those files...

The frame was done in Photoshop CS. I just expanded the 'canvas size' by 80 pixels each way (ie. gives a 40 pixel border) and placed my signature using the text tool :)

Nice pictures, my favorite is the first one of the steam roller.

Ever tried converting a B/W image to color and then printing it? it gives extra depth and richness and depending on your color matching system and printer/monitor configuration it sometimes gives a semi sepia tone effect whihc looks good and can be used to your advantage.

I always mess with these settings to produce different results as opposed to straight B/W.

Very cool!!! I'm curious about how you got such even exposure. Do you remember what you metered off of for the 3rd picture?

Yup, I metered right in the centre of the photo. ie. on the front side of the shed. The sun was pointing directly at that spot/side so if anything was going to get blown out, it was that section of the white shed.

Again, the polarizer helped a lot with the sky, otherwise that would have been way over-exposed.
