Yes, I just sold my D70.

It would be a wonderful camera, but as it stands now it just doesn´t quite make it. For me, at least.
So now I don´t know what to get.

I´d love a D70 with a 6 Mpixel Foveon sensor ;) and metering with older lenses (that should be real easy to implement).

Well, have to wait a while and see what gives.

Wow.. What was some of the thing that did not make it for you?

Why didn't you just take it back to the store and get a full refund???

I take it you haven't had the camera for more than 14 days.

You can't do that everywhere - it's only common in the States, and he is in Sweden

Well, the 6mpix Foveon sensor will not increase the pic quality that substantually to sell this and buy the other. I might see how the metering thing with other lenses could be a show stopper for some people but really, I don't think he ever had one and if you did, the D70 never had a Foveon sensor and the documentation clearly states it does not meter with older lenses.

Well, I can understand about the metering issue w/ manual lenses. But the aliasing issue is probably just a matter of not being familiar w/ digital.

He could get a 1Ds and still not be satisfied w/ the aliasing issue if he likes to look at his pics at 200% crop. :-)

To answer some of your questions:

1. No, you can´t just go back to the shop for a refund just because your not entirely satisfied,

2. I know there´s no such thing as a 6 Mpixel Foveon at this time, but the samples I´ve seen from the 3 Mpix SD-10 are very impressive, while the rest of that camera isn´t (though the software seems very good).
A wish is still a wish ;)

3. I found I couldn´t adjust to the tiny viewfinder, and the aliasing (visible not only at 200 %) put me off.

4. No provision for cable release (I missed that one) and the remote not supplied with the camera (even el-cheapo consumer cameras provide remotes).

5. General feeling of fragility. I think I want metal!

I agree with a few of your points. This is my first DSLR (just sold my N90S), but its my fourth digital. I've been waiting for this. My initial reaction (beyond incredible excitement and high expectations to be tested over the next few days) is that:

1. Body feels a bit weak. I'd like a metal body/and or something that feels more rugged.
2. Viewfinder is small, way to small.
3. Rubber hood on viewfinder falls off to easily.

David:

The viewfinder is a huge issue. In fact, the only point that kept the D100 always in the back of my mind, bad buffer and all.

I have to move up from a P&S to a dslr since I have a few good primes and passed on the D100 last year when I read the specs for the D70.
The D100 upgrade will not be out in a while and I need a camera.

... even though I've never owned an SLR before.

Other than the aliasing issue, which is a fact of life w/ digital, I can appreciate the rest. However, you're not gonna get what you want w/out spending much more or perhaps go w/ the Canon 10D instead. The D100's viewfinder shouldn't be quite that much bigger than D70. If you want big, the 10D should be much bigger plus offers the strongest feeling body in this class it seems.

I guess if you're gonna stick w/ Nikon and don't mind waiting another 6 months or so, then waiting for the D100 replacement might be worthwhile. Of course, there are no guarantees (or even any indications) that you will get what you're asking for.

If such a camera has good color rendition (my pet peeve with X3) and fast read out, it would be perfect.

Well I don't believe 300D or more expensive 10D or D100 comes with cable release.
5. General feeling of fragility. I think I want metal!
Then you need 10D or other pro DSLRs. They are more expensive.

So you chose to wait? Well good luck!
