A80 Photo Thread...

I am waiting for my A80 to arrive... probably Thursday. Can't wait to take some pictures and post them.

One request to everyone: if you can, please share the Exif information (or may be just some important fact, such as the mode, Aperture, shutter speed, WB, others..) and any tricks / techniques you've used when taking that pictures (such as manual focusing, panning, macro, etc.)

I am just learning and would LOVE to see how other A80 owners are using the camera.

I'm sure why you chose to take this thread personally. I liked your original flower post alot. If fact when I mentioned that some of the posts had been breathtaking, that was the shot that I had in mind at the time. That said, I think that your latest image lacks the punch of your original post. The biggest reason for that is simply the size of the image posted. It's too small to really pull much from the image. A larger version of the image or tighter cropping would generally help that.

I tried to make my post as general as possible to avoid pointing out which images were gems and which were lacking, it was not my intent to hurt anyones feelings. It's just that all too often I see people posting images that really do not give any clear impression of their ability as a photographer, or the camera's usability as a tool in their hands.

As far as constructive critiques are concerned, I try to do my best to pass along both acolades and constructive critisim. You can see from my critiques on photosig, that I do my best to provide useful information to others:

I must admit that I am sometimes very surprised at the images that
people choose to post in threads like this. While I have seen
quite a few images in this thread that were simply breathtaking,
there have been more than a couple were, I've literally asked
myself, "Why are they posting this?"
I'm quite offended. While I'm picking photographs that to me look
great, my opinion is not so blinkered as to think that there are
not improvements that can be made I was hoping to get constructive
critcism, encouragement and knowledge imparted to me to help me
achieve better results. If I'm not going to get that encouragement
I might as well call it quits now. I'm so disappointed :( everyone
so far has been wonderful. The last thing that a budding

The Original posted stated:

"I would lilke to propose a thread where we can all share a photo a day taken from our A80's."

I think you read a little too much into the purpose of this thread. He didn't post a thread saying "let's post really great pictures to convince people to buy the A80". He didn't post a thread saying "let's all post our best photos, that represents us as humans, that should be able to be connected to by anyone at a glance, blah blah bah".

A photo a day. Meaning, I took this photo today and would like to share. I'm not saying you can't try to be helpful and critisize an image, but don't barge in here telling people their pictures are not worth posting only because YOU don't like it and YOU would prefer a thread with tighter rules for posting.

I suggest if YOU don't like the original poster's idea for this thread, don't click on it.
I'm not suggeting that this should be a contest, but that rather
when posting an image, you should have a good reason for posting
it. When I see a out of focus image on a thread here, I think
"Wow, that is the best image they can get out of this camera, maybe
I should look at a camera that does a better job of judging
exposure or has better autofocus, etc.

If you think I'm being a jerk, don't I'm not trying to say that
anyones a bad photographer, I'm just trying to convince you to show
us your best work. Show us the stuff that invites commentary.
This is not a contest. Threads such as this are meant to show the
camera's ability in simple point-n-shoot situations. Before I
purchased my camera I appreciated such threads very much. You can
better judge the camera in my opinion when not looking at 'art'

they are doing. After all, what will the pictures my wife and kids
who have no real interest in photography look like?

A guy that's not at all impressed by the A80:

Hey Guys.

I just purchased a Canon A80 and have been snapping photos as much
as humanly possible. I would lilke to propose a thread where we
can all share a photo a day taken from our A80's.
I'll start with one of my first outdoor shots.

It is possible that I misinterpreted the intentions of the thread. However, in my reading of the post I did not interpret the concept of "share a photo a day" to mean a photo taken that day. The post seemed to be looking for people to post a image a day regardless of when the image was taken.

I'm not trying to tell anyone how they should take pictures or what they should post. My photo albums (and even moreso my computer) are filled with uninsipred images that few other people would find interesting our useful. Many of these hold special meaning for me for reasons that would not be obvious to others. But I don't post those pictures because they are not images that would appeal or provide any meaningful use to someone unaqainted with me, my family, or my personal tastes.

It sounds to me like you are proposing that this thread be "a day in the life of a A80." The problem with that is that a day in your life is really only interesting to you unless you provide some reason for it to be interesting to me. It is this reason why reality TV shows are edited, because just watching someone go through a normal day is boring.

As far as not reading this thread, I am currently trying to make a decision on whether to buy a A80 or not. A thread like this is generally a useful tool in making an informed decision.

All I'm trying to say is, it sounds like you are disagreeing more with the whole idea of the thread and you might be better served starting your own thread with your requirements.

Even beyond that, all of this is very subjective. As they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I just feel that the level of criticism you placed ("not worth posting") on some of these images is a little too steep for something so close to "art".

I guess I feel this way. When you put yourself in the public eye, you leave yourself open to commentary. Some people are going to like what you put out there, and some might not. However you have chosen to expose yourself. It is unrealistic to accept only the positive and not the negative. It is ridiculus to cry foul because someone says "You know what would make you look good, post your best work." If the best work you can manage is uninspired and out of focus, don't expect the world to tell you "Hey that is a great image." It's not a great picture and no one is doing you a favor by letting you think it is.
Fair enough. Just remember that some pictures you might discard as
not being informative for you might be the deciding picture for
someone else.
I'll grant you that people find different people are bound to have different ideas about what they enjoy, however they generally share the idea that an image should posess the basic fundementals of Focus, exposure, and composition.

Just to clarify, I did not mean that only positive comments were warranted. I was just stating that I felt your comment that some photos were "not worth posting" was too harsh. I agree people open themselves up to criticism by posting and should even expect worse commentary, but I myself would never do such and it seemed to me that most others here would not either. This is just a personal opinion of what is tactful and what is rude and obviously I guess we differ in the distinction. Its a free forum, post as you like, and you'll be judged accordingly.

While you as a consumer may only want to see the good things about a product, I guarantee you there are others, like myself and someone else who posted before, that would like to see all aspects, good and bad. Many, if not most of the people who would buy a consumer digital camera, like the A80, are not professional photographers and never will put in the time and effort it would take to produce a single photo you would probably praise. I assure you that they will have a better expectation of what they will be getting from the camera from viewing threads like this, than they would be looking at only the personal bests of enthusiasts who frequent a digital photography forum. I completely understand why you want to see the best possible photos from a camera before purchasing it. Can you not understand that the average Joe would want to see other average Joe shots before he buys a camera?

I'm sure why you chose to take this thread personally. I liked
your original flower post alot. If fact when I mentioned that some
of the posts had been breathtaking, that was the shot that I had in
mind at the time. That said, I think that your latest image lacks
the punch of your original post. The biggest reason for that is
simply the size of the image posted. It's too small to really pull
much from the image. A larger version of the image or tighter
cropping would generally help that.

I tried to make my post as general as possible to avoid pointing

I had planned on not persuing my point on this thread anymore, but I don't like not responding to people. It's entirely possible that I was being a little bit more of an ass then I intended to be. I spend a bit too much time perusing the threads on DPReview and reading countless threads in all the forums with people posting images of the "look I took a picture" variety. All to often these posts are only looking to have someone say "hey great pic" even though what they deserve is closer to "you get credit for trying". I was not trying to be harsh, although I realize that I probably should have considered my words my carefully.
"why do they even bother to post these kind of pics?"
That was definitely harsher than the situation called for. And I apologize for being insensitive regarding that comment. I had meant to say that the pics that some people choose to post surprise me in their choices, much the same way you might be bewildered by seeing a person wearing an outfit that just does not match at all. Or a woman wearing garish clown-face makeup. You just think to yourself, what went through their head when they chose that look.

And much to my embarassment, I directed my comments at this particular group because this was were I happened to be, yet this thread probably didn't really deserve to have me decided to spout off for no real reason.

Yes. This is just a friendly forum with amateur photographers who at times like to share some of their latest pictures. I often go to get-togethers where there is always someone proudly showing off some pictures. The last thing I ever think of saying is "Hey, these pictures SUCK! Is this the best you can do? You’re wasting my time". That's exactly what you did.

You said before that posting pictures leaves you open to criticism. True. But opening your mouth also lets the world know you're an ass. I'd rather be known for being a poor photographer than a jerk.
