I have ordered the EF 70-200 / F4 and I wonder whether I should purchase the tripod mount as well.
Any opinions?

I assume your referring to a tripod collar. If so, you can get along without the tripod collar, but if mounting the camera/lens to a tripod, the collar gives you options not available with the standard camera body mount. The collar alllows the shifting of the camera to a portrait style with ease. You just loosen the collar and rotate the lens and camera. I have a tripod collar with my 70-200 and use it all the time. There are many that will say the collar is not necessary and they aren't wrong.

Definitely not a necessity because the f/4 is quite light for its focal length and is very comfortable to handhold. However the collar might be a nice addition if you are planning on using it on a tripod frequently. I am considering buying the collar for mine.

Hi,

I was thinking about it before I got my EF 70-200 / F4.

I uses my 300D on a Gitzo 1028 tripod and Manfrotto
484 RC2 ball head. All are light weight stuff, so I was
thinking a collar will help in handling, especially in portrait.

Since I just got the lenses, so can't really say that with all my
experience it is not necessary. But with my set-up and 1.4X,
the handling are relatively straight forward and there's no
sagging or problem with controlling the tilt.

With the collar on the lenses, it is less comfortable hand-held,
at least for me.

And the collar is quite expensive, so I'll suggest you wait until
your lenses arrive, try it out with your set-up then decide.

you will probably want to use the 70-200 with a tripod at some point, and the ring takes the stress off the camera body. the ring is quite expensive, however.

Without the tripod collar, it is next to impossible to mount the camera + this lens on a tripod in portrait position, unless you have a pretty burly ball head or some thing designed with this in mind. My ball head would slip a little no matter how hard I tighten it, so I have to compensate for the slip with a tripod leg extension. What a pain.
