Hello everyone.

I've looked all over pbase for long exposure A2 samples. The longest I've found is 3s at ISO 100.

Can anyone post some ISO 64 10 second or longer exposures using the in-camera noise reduction? If they could be posted full size without any further image manipulations, that would be great. Subject matter is of no concern.

Some subjective commentary as to how well the A2 performs under these conditions would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any responses.

Hi David

I had the white balance set for daylight. The file is huge so be patient, but I thought you would want the original. This camera is awsome!
Take care, Rick

Hi Dave,

I took this a couple of weeks ago as soon as I got the camera. A2 mounted on a tripod, photo taken through a window, no post processing, 30 seconds, F8, ISO 64, aperature priority (I should have played with the EV)

This is straight out of the camera, no PP.

Hi,

I have some 8 second and 10 second (ISO 100) exposures at:
http://jasonz.smugmug.com/gallery/83743

Also there are neatImage fixed versions there too.

Hi,

Thanks- they came out pretty well. I only wish that at the time I did a test of all the different ISO speeds for comparison. But, I didn't think of that til afterwards.

Jason
When I was looking at the "small" size, I don't think I could have
guessed which was which. The original sizes were slightly more
obvious ;) Anyway, they really cleaned up nice, and would make
fantastic prints. Great pictures.

Thanks guys for all the responses. You make me want the camera...maybe in a few months when I'll have some time to use it.

Best,

Hi David,

Have at it and let me know how it turns out. Somehow those hot pixels are a lot more evident on the pic I uploaded. On my hard drive they are not near as bright. Any ideas why that is? Anyone?
Rick
This is the exact kind of sample I'm looking for.

Thanks Rick.

Rick,

Unfortunately, after a cleaning in Neat Image, the hot pixels remain. I'll try a few more times, but looks like the only way to get those out will be a through retouching job in photoshop.

David
How well do those hot pixels clean? Do you mind if I save the
image for cleaning purposes?

This is the exact kind of sample I'm looking for.

Thanks Rick.

David

DigitalAngel,

Do you believe that had you intentionally overexposed the camera, there would have been less noise? Is this even possible at the camera's longest shutter speed?

Thanks for your post. These are exactly the kind of images I'm looking for.

That is to be expected. Hot pixels are not the noise neatimage can solve.

What is with dark frame subtraction on the A2? (my other post) Is it not possible with bulb?

If the A2 really does not offer dark frame subtraction in bulb mode (the old D7 does), you can still manually do it in Photoshop. (It's not even necessary to use such a sophisticated program.)

Hi guys...I took the liberty of trying to clean the image as I too am looking at the A2 for the future perhaps. The program took about 4 seconds to touch up this portion of the photo. I have dial up, so it takes a long time to upload. The original full size bmp took about 10 seconds. I also had to recompress as the filtered image is enlarged a bit. May not be what you're looking for, but let me know if you want more info.

But I wanted to know if the A2/A1 has no dark frame subtraction for
long (bulb) exposures? It really helps a lot with hot pixels. This
post
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1024&message=8108922
states that there is no Dark frame subtraction with bulb?!
It certainly works for me, in bulb or not on my A2. Hot pixels aren't totally eliminated by the darkframe NR, but they are GREATLY reduced.

However, I did find that NR is NOT done if your camera is set to burst mode (continuous drive), even if you only take one shot. Burst mode disables the darkframe subtraction it seems. The manual doesn't mention this, though it makes some sense.

You want long exposures, you got. Both taken at an ISO64 setting, but camera adjusted to ISO100 (go figure). Just used PSE2 to reduce image size and compress for web.

This one is a 10 sec shot:
