That is one very bright capture of the rainbow, and from my experience, not so easy to achieve!

Looking at the coverage you have, and remembering Artshot Sue's amazing stitching photos, maybe you should try duplicating the image, then flipping it horizontally by 180°. You might just be able to generate the entire bow this way . . .

H-G, that's about the most brilliant rainbow I've ever seen! You
can see how it lights up the ground where the pot of gold is!! :))

Terrific image!

Bob,

Your shot is more interesting.

Mine was created by nature (the rainbow that is). I still have that "snap shotty" look.

I shoot product with this c-5050 normally ... so, next for me is to work on my composition
( I keep saying that ... and one day , I will ... really LoL )

Bob,

Thanks for your link ... I think I learned something from your exif
I think your shot is sharper at f8.0

Next time I will need to shoot Shutter Priority at f8.0

I think you mean "Aperture Priority".

But I don't think f8 vs f4.5 contributes to a sharpness difference.
All the difference could be in the post-processing, unless you are
comparing your original (not available for me to see) with Bob's
original on pbase. But f4.5 should be near the "sweet spot" of
the lens for sharpness (not wide open, not pinhole small).

Bob needed to use f8 to get both his foreground and his background
in focus (depth of field). (Actually, the scene was so bright he almost
needed to use an ND filter - 1/1000 at f8 is at both limits of the camera,
speed and aperture.) I think the foreground is the difference you are
seeing between your shot and his - his has a foreground to frame the
subject and yours doesn't. Of course, the unusual brightness of the
rainbow in your shot makes yours a great image even without a frame.
The sharp edges in Bob's foreground lead you to see more sharpness,
but in the distant subject, the sharpness (downsized, anyway) of
yours is comparable to the sharpness of his, or can be with suitable
post-processing.

Opps yes, aperture Priority

Thank you for that info. Do you know what is the "sweet spot" for the c-5050 ?

I did notice that the "sweet spot" on the zoom seems to be the zoom position it "locks on" in Super Macro (not sure what that is ... maybe at 70% zoom?)

So, if I set up my c-5050 for the

Sweet spot on the Zoom and the Aperture that would give me the sharpest pics ? (in good light)
  • that would be something good to know on the c-5050

Thank you ... I think you are right ... the forground of his shot does make it seem sharper ...
And actually that is one of the things I liked about his composition.

Now I need to tinker with USM and see if I can improve my sharpness.
I was unsure how far I should go with USM ... in general I think I oversharpen.

Mine seem to be the least spectacular I've seen
There are three angles of it here:
http://www.pbase.com/rrawzz/butterflyniagara Amongst the BFlies & Mofongos.

Luckily it appears on any day that direct sunlight falls on "The Falls" so all I need now is for it to be backed by a dark ominous sky like yours...LOL..

I'd be quite happy with what you got but I wouldn't begin to try improving yours without the original file. But I'm pretty sure any improvement would be minimal anyway, especially since my workflow is so basic.
Nice & colorful, thanks for postin it!

Canadian Club,

wOw, being someone with limited PS skills.
Need to ask … what did you do to that pic???

My original looks drab in comparison … the Rainbow is so much brighter! And it even seems bigger.

Yes, I do like your crop better
Everything seems to "pop" more

Now, is this what they are talking about in the other thread?
You made my "snap shot" into a "Photograph" !

CC I am honored that you took the time to work on this pic.
Obviously I have seen the great work you have done before.

Hope you don’t mind if I brag to all my friends and show this pic around.

I got lucky on this shot … and all of you on this forum have encouraged me to Learn and Practice more …

I always miss this forum when I don’t have the time to post and lurk
Hi: Man, that is some rainbow.

Toned down the buildings, cropped the right hand side a bit, frame
and signature.

I tried reversing but the center part was not good.

That rainbow just pops out at you.

Beautiful shot.

UZ,

Saw your Rainbows and one day would love to be able to compose a shot like that.

Right now I guess ... I just have to be satisfied living in Hawaii where there are Rainbows every day there is Rain. LoL

UZ thank you.
