Backyard Birds

Sounds like that one actually might be more portable than the one I bought. The one I bought, I plan on just keeping it parked in my backyard, but the one you got... sounds like it might be more easily packable to other locations.

Mine is getting some product testing right now, the winds/snow are building... hopefully my stake-down job is good enough!
for about $30. It's small, but holds me, a chair with tripod and
camera. It will stand up by itself if there is no wind. Nice for
the deck, near the feeder. I think it's called Ameristep Outhouse.
(now why on earth call it an outhouse?)

Gene--

It "rolls" up--you have to figure out how to recoil the steel spring rods--and fits into a case about 2.5 feet across like a disk.

Easy to set up but I never can seem to get the darn thing back in the case correctly. Kind of like a Christmas present!

So...it sits in my basement unfurled, much to my wife's chagrin.

Thanks again for all the great information. I got the same one you did and it will arrive tomorrow. I have many feeders but am going to get some stumps as the article you linked suggests.

Keep shooting the peepers and keep posting. They are great.

THe blind seems like a wonderful idea. However, I have a different problem.

I have an open window and the feeder is about 20 feet away. Using a Sigma 50-500 on my 10D, I can still get good shots. The thing is, every time I take a picture, the sound of the shutter release makes the birds take off. Even though I live on a very noisy street (trucks roaring past the front of the house), the backyard birds seem more affected by the sound of my camera. How do you deal with this?

Pradeep

Well that's good to know! My 400mm/5.6 should be here by Thursday or Friday. I might have to move my blind further back from my feeder area!

Pradeep, Hmmm....

I wish I knew how to help, but the birds in my yard seem to be unaffected by my 10D's camera noise. There is a highway about a hundred yards behind this area, so maybe the background noise is muffling my camera noise enough?

I can squeeze off 4 or 5 shots and they take no notice. The only thing they seem to notice is if I open one of the blind windows very wide, they notice any fast hand movement or head movement of mine. If I move slowly, they seem secure enough and go about their business.

Maybe you can muffle the noise with a towel or something? Just a wild stab at it!

A lot of the smaller birds around here seem interested in the focus beep and shutter click. Afterall it is the start of mating season.

Gene, as I said, I live on a very busy road and in my backyard you can hear the cars and trucks very loud (I'm bang on one of the busiest streets on Long Island). The birds have gotten used to it and believe it or not, they can hear my camera shutter from about 15 feet away amidst that noise. They do come back again in a minute or two, but that means I get only one shot at a time. I will try the towel, may help.

Gene--you can get really close (I think aobut 10 feet or so) with the 400. I haven't had to move from my usual perch.

these are some of the birds found in my

backyard

I put a blind up in my backyard recently. I had went on a bird
photo shoot with a local group here in NW Ohio a few weeks ago,
that gave me the idea. We shot small birds from blinds set up
around a feeder area. I thought, "hey... I can do this in my own
backyard." So, here are a few first tries. In the pbase gallery,
the first 3 shots were taken on the bird shoot at the park. The
rest were taken yesterday, in my backyard, from my own blind.

Canon EOS 10D used with EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 (bought this lense back
in the 80's with my first EOS camera, the EOS 620, not a great
lense from what I've read, but it has to do, til I get my EF 400mm
f/5.6 this week. That, I'll be using for wildlife and birds at the
wildlife refuge. :-)

Any comments... or tips or questions, just shoot!

I hear ya Gene...we came out West on vacation in the early 60's when I was a teenager and I fell in love with the mountains and told my mom that someday I would live out here!! Well, it was a dream come true in '81 and have been here ever since. I can't wait to get up into the high country this summer and shot, shot, shot!!

My grandparents lived in Perrysburg on Hickory St. just across the tracks from the then polo club. Used to spend alot of time there as a kid and have many fond memories.

Enjoy those birds...Jack :-)
Cheers...Jack
