Hi All,

First off, I really want to thank everyone who replied to my previous thread asking for good shots to shoot in the San Francisco/San Jose area. Your advice on where to shoot was very helpful!

I had to travel for work to San Jose by way of San Francisco. I ended up having 1/2 day of free time, so I spent some time in San Francisco taking pictures. Mainly I hung around the Golden Gate bridge, as it is just such a beautiful area. I also travelled to the beach, and the next day I went down to Santa Cruz.

I started out down on Crissy Field, which is close to the beach and looks North towards the bridge:

After enjoying the view from there, I headed up to West Battery Hill (?):

This was a pretty cool area. There were lots of earthen bunkers that used to hold canon batteries. A little further down the trail:

Next, I drove North to get some views looking south and tried some IR. This was my first IR with my Canon 10D. Works fairly well, but there are hotspots in every image:

Continuing along the coast, I eventually hit the beach. I parked and walked across the street to the Golden Gate Park. There is a cool windmill on the East side:

After stopping for a bite to eat, it was on to the North side of the Golden gate bridge and the Marin headlands. Lots of great views of the bridge, and I stopped at every one. The first stop was a little pullover just after you cross:

Next, up to the Golden Gate National Park area:

Looking South into Saulsalito:

And up a bit higher on the road:

Finally, I got to the top of the highway where it starts to curve back down. There were more earthen batteries here that you could walk through. This is looking North. The fog was starting to come in:

Time for another break for some dinner. Afterwards, I setup for my main goal for this shooting trip: a sunset progression:

Last stop of the night was back to the other side of the bridge for a night shot:

I'm still working on a few shots from Santa Cruz from the next night. I'll post them when I'm done.

Hi Tarik! Good to see you again. :) Man, that pano discussion seems like a long time ago. Have I really been around that long? ;-)

Glad you liked the shots. For the IR, I adjusted the levels (pull in the right slider on the luminosity channel, and pull in the left slider on each of the other channels). I then swapped the Red and Blue channels. Finally adjusted the contrast slightly and used Dodge a bit to kill the hot spots.

Hope that helps!

Hi Carlos,

Well, I used my 28 - 135 for these, with the R72 filter on. This lens is great because it has the IR focus points on it (which I used). I put the filter on, took a shot, and then set the custom WB based on that. Shots were at F8 at around 25 to 30 seconds. In PS, I adjusted the levels (pull in the right slider on the luminosity channel, and pull in the left slider on each of the other channels). I then swapped the Red and Blue channels. Finally adjusted the contrast slightly and used Dodge a bit to kill the hot spots.

Hope that helps,

James
Pretty cool shots, James.

I would like to know about your IR setup, if you do not mind.

Thanks!
Carlos Ch.

These are all really good. The 2nd to the last one (the Sunset shot with the orange reflections off the water) is outstanding, IMO. I also really enjoyed the IR GG shot. Matter of fact, I enjoyed em all...lol

I only had two concerns. One, is that even using DSL, it took over a minute to load your post. Secondly, you took really good shots from all the good perspectives. You were supposed to leave a few. You know, for others that follow....LOL J/K

Good stuff and thanks for sharing these,
Steve

PS: I can't wait to see your Santa Cruz shots :-) Maybe you even nailed those darn Wintering Monarchs. The ones I've failed to nail, on 3 seperate occassions :-( But, as the Governator says "I'll be bach" ;-)

What a beautiful travelogue in one place (essentially), and a goodly # of very striking shots, woohoo.
Thanks for that James.

I was really struck many of the high shots, and particularly the north side hiway to the bridge, whoa. Couple of north side ocean side panos of the Golden Gate, yeah.
Fun trip for me, on your dollar, where are we going next?

james, really nice work.

having lived in the area for a time, i can say that you've done it proud, real proud.

congrats on a fantastic shoot.

James,

Thanks for sharing these fantastic shots. You've demonstrated a wide range of photographic style in composition, mood, color, etc. These give me some great ideas for turning the ordinary into extraordinary!

Keep up the great work. Look forward to future posts.

Grrreeeat shots James. I live in the bay area and have gone to all of the points you show but mine were not even close to the beauty in your photos. I especially like the pano of the GGB and the IR right below it.

Very inspiring.
Thanks,
-Khalid
Thanks for the lovely views, James.

If you don't mind, what lens(es) were you using?

I especially love your IR panoramic from the north side of the GG bridge. And I also liked the swirling water in your dusk shots of the bridge.

That must have been one mamzing day!!!
