I was wondering what motivates us to spend fortunes in time and money in pursuit of our love of capturing pictures?

Has anyone got any insites into why they love photography?

And who are your favourite photgraphers, the ones you seek inspiration from?

I change all the time, but at the moment i am really impressed by Carl de Keyzer.

There is'nt a country that he does not seem to have visited !

Superby lit, and with a great eye for detail, they are a masterclass and really make me want to improve !

They are pictures that sum up the human race.

Any favourites that inspire you that you would like to share?

Cheers, and successful picture making !

My dad, who died when I was only twenty, is my inspiration. He was an avid amatuer slide photographer and I have been in possession of his collection, scanning them, cleaning them up and burning them to CD's for my brother and sisters. His photos give me a glimse of the world through his eyes. I am in awe of the legacy he left for us and hope to do the same with my collection for my children.

Professional all time favorite:

Irving Penn and his pictures of people from around the world (that he initially shot unprofessionally)

Example: This shot from Peru called "Cuzco Children"

Amateur:

This man at the time being - http://www.pbase.com/dave1

He also posts in these forums with the same handle. Just can't get enough of his pictures.

Example: This one, called "The Yawn"

Good thread.

Someday we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

Just the pinnacle for me, his approach, his attitude, his work. Second to none.

Common applause is the most frequently ignored warning sign.

Photography undergoes the same changes, like in the past happened to the written language: superficial, “artistic” phrases had been replaced by the records of the colloquial.

Same happens in the photography: records of inspection and travel are replaced by records of participation. First person narration wins the most lately in photography.

See sites by Giselle Didi, Christy Karpinski or Todd Deutsch to know what I am talking about.

Photography is also the matter of presentation: drywall gallery seems to be even drier than ever, today’s web animation technologies are still premature.
Perhaps the most important things happen on your own site.

Why am I into photography? Well, I think I have mentioned it here before. Due to vision problems, my vision lacks detail. The best way to describe my vision is like looking though the viewfinder of a cheap disposible camera. The image is smaller and there is not a single focal point. By taking digital photos, I can go back later and observe the details that I missed.

How do I know what to take a photo of? I still see fairly good and can see to the horizon. I may see a tree in the distance buyt not see the individual leaves. Of course, I know thre are individual leaves. So, I take pictures of what seems (or potentially seems) interesting.

Just like the cloud face pic that I posted earlier. The sunbeams shining though the clouds looked potentially interesting. I didn't know how interesting it really was until I got home and reviewed the photos.

What inspires me now? It is the wildlife photos I am seeing on the Panasonic froum. I'd like to quit my job and go on a safari! But, if I quit my job, I can't afford all the cool gadgets and accessories! :(

I'm finding that phtography can be a lot like fishing. You may not get that special photo everytime you go out for a shoot. But if you don't spend time going out, you won't get that special shot.

When on my Alaska cruise, I saw all the other tourists going snap, snap, snap, etc. For me I did the occacssional snap snap snap but I also tried to look around to see what was coming that would make a great shot.

And then there is the time you snap and something unexpected happens. I got one shot of a bear that had just tried to catch a salmon. You can see the bear pulling back and you can see in the lower right hand corner the fish that got away.

It is images like this that inspre me to keep shooting.

Now is'nt this more fun than talking about equipment all the time? :)

I'd have to say that one that is worthy of special honor in this day and age of hurried candid shooting has to be Henri Cartier-Bresson (who may still be alive). He created an entire artform out of candid photography, and had the artist's eye to make each a masterpiece of its own. Here's a gallery with a few of his better known examples:

Hi Pride ..

Well I have to say if you are going to have a flash site (I mean made using flash :-) thats one you linked to works pretty finely in my opinion. Its about 4000% better than the rest of the flash implementations I have seen for photographer sites.

And he does look an impressive photographer and clever businessman.

Well for me quite a lot of the ones posted to this old thread here continue to inspire me ...
Hope it also has some ammo somewhere in it for you ..

As I've mentioned a few times before, I really enjoy the fairly recent phenomenon of the photolog or 'photoblog'. A good launch point for exploring the world of photologs is:

http://www.photoblogs.org/

Of course, not all photologs are created equal, but photoblogs.org ranks sites and most in the top 100 offer something interesting.

By their nature photologs tend towards an informal, contemporary style of photography. Most, not surprisingly, tend to be urban.

From the top 10, I particularly like:

http://www.quarlo.com/
http://chromogenic.net/

Enjoy.

Thanks to Pride for starting it and to all who have contributed. You have introduced me to some great photography and great photographers unknown to me.

As for me, here are some inspirations in no particular order:

Larry Burrows - http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0302/lb_intro.html

Diane Arbus - http://photography.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.cosmicbaseball.com/darbhcpp.html

Eugene Smith - http://www.photo-seminars.com/Fame/eugesmith.htm

Jacques Henri-Lartigue - http://www.staleywise.com/collection/lartigue/lartigue.html

Elliot Erwitt - http://www.salon.com/people/feature/1999/11/29/erwitt/

...just to name a few.

Why did I succumb to photography's lure at the age of eight? Why did I pursue it, get a college degree in it and earn my living at it for 25 years? I have no clue. I do know I gave it up as a profession partly because I love it too much. Now I'm free to follow it wherever it leads, not where I must go.
