I have had my S2 Pro since April last year. I noticed a hot blue pixel in a shot I took so I did some research here and on Google and did a test with the "Dead/Hot Pixel Test" software. I had 18 Hot pixels. Some red some blue. I did consider sending the S2 back but I wanted to use it and the hot pixels were not very noticable.

I have been thinking about sending the camera in to Fuji UK to get the hot pixels mapped out before my year warranty expires . . so today I repeated the test I did last year in April . . . I now have only 3 white hot pixels . . . I checked the EXIF info on the original test picture and I have repeated with the same ISO, aperature, shutter speed and focal length.

Weird eh ?

I still plan to send the camera to Fuji, there is appears to be dirt on the CCD, I have a splodge on my pics that has been there since april.

Was the camera the same tempature?

If they camera is hotter or colder it will affect the number of bad pixel showing up sometimes. They were HOT pixels not DEAD pixel right? Dead pixel I dont think every change.. But i noticed the same thing with the hot pixels. When I used the camera during the summer they showed up a little more, and I had more of them. When I took some long exposures of an moon eclipse it was 40 degrees outside and I shot at a high iso on some to check the shot and those has less pixel then useally..

The temerature in April would have been a little warmer, but not by much, I may try the same test after the S2 has been in my warm living room for an hour. Yes the pixels are HOT not DEAD . .

Hi, other than temperature, there´s another possibility - check this thread a while ago:

Hi,
I have read that thread before and considered doing it . . . but

Yes but meanwhile maybe you have made one or two overexposures and the effect may be the same ...? I don´t know, this is only a guess for a reason why you lost the hot pixels ...

S2 is like red wine ... improves with age :-)

I can confirm that is exactly the experience I have had. I have one particular pixel that has been hot and normal a couple of times now. If I look back through my captures is goes after a number of shots where the area of the sensor that it is in was not exactly over exposed but certainly within a highlight/well lit chromakey background area.

Also similar to others experiences I have seen hot pixels appear after cleaning and I have also seen them go. This has always intrigued me and I must admit worried me. Is it caused by excess pressure, or even more worryingly is the glass front of the sensor actually slightly permeable?

I cant figuar out what out DSLR dont have black balance like high end video camera do.. You have white and black balance.. The video cameras have have a switch, up is WB and down is BB. It closes the iris down and when it sees hot/dead pixels it remappes them automatically!

The Olympus E1 (DSLR) has hot/dead pixels mapping function.

I suggest other camera manufacturers should follow suit Olympus to have this function built into their DSLR.

From what has happened to my S2 it looks like it doesn't need it . . the 3 hot pixel I have now are not a problem.

So when I send my S2 in for the CCD cleaning what else should I ask them to look at ?? Suggestions please . . . .

RaptorUK;

I mailed mine back yesterday, my warranty is up in 3 days. I told them that I had hot pixels i wanted fixed, then asked if they could check to see if everthing else is within spec. , things such as AF accuracy, metering accuracy, flash exposure. I'll see soon what they say.

Good luck.

Pete

This is not actually the purpose of white and black balance though. I won't dispute that some of the high end cameras like the Panasonic DVCPRO50 cameras do do this but most do not.

When you do a white balance you are telling the camera the colour temperature of the light, not mapping dead pixels.

Black balance is a little more complicated and has to do with the specific voltages produced and black detail. It is not mapping hot pixels.
For a quick reference on these two look at:
http://www.mediacollege.com/video/camera/howto/white-balance.html

In general white balance is something every digital photographer needs to understand. So anyone out there who doesn't know, go out and find out about it!

I am off to Thruxton on the 11th April for a BTCC event (motorsport) . . I have a D1X on hand if the S2 doesn't get back in time . . .

I got my S2 back from Fuji today after having to pay to have dirt cleaned from the CCD, it cost me £94 . . . dispite my insistance that the dirt had been there since day 1 they said I should have sent the camera back within 28 of purchase. My S2 is still in warranty. My argument was that I couldn't identify the problem as dirt that soon after getting my first digital camera . . . never mind. The cost also includes a full clean of the mirror box as well so I am not really unhappy . . . and trunaround time was excellent. I have done a test image of the blue sky at f22 . . I have one spot of dirt off to the far right of the frame . . I can live with that.
