Fresh from last saturday, another fine session with the good friends, Jacques, Miel and Wim, I noticed this love story and focussed on the couple, I always love to look at couples who are in love, their body language is so great. Hope that you enjoy it to. Some more of that afternoon can be seen here: http://www.pbase.com/dievee/saturday_afternoon_11

hallo dirk,

quick response, eh? as i commented on someone else's series, this forum seems to be going in the direction of captured emotion. it is spring, after all. you have represented a facet of human emotion which i have been wanting to study for awhile now. couples in love is the most interesting of subjects, in my opinion. you've gathered a representative sample. they're lost in their own world, interacting within a private space, inhabited only by them. i remember that feeling. i was riding on the subway in new york. sitting side by side, our legs brushing against one another softly. her fingers sliding down the back of my neck gracefully. assailants and would-be muggers eyeing my wallet. to tell you the truth, i doubt i would have given up much of a fight.

anyway, im getting off topic. thank you for leading me there. another fine series my friend.

Dirk,
"....376.jpg" is a lovely, lovely capture.

Were you very close? Or do you use a big telephoto? How do people usually react to your photographing them? I often hesitate because I feel I am invading their privacy...but your photos are so warm and humane that I am feeling compelled to experiment with photographing my fellow homo sapiens.

Very best,

Nice photo's, I just find cigarettes offensive anymore. We have passed laws where I live that prohibit smoking in most restaurants, I'm happy about that. But I know that others don't feel that way.

Nice work

Stealthy capture
of the variety of nuance Dirk.
But I found myself coming back
repeatedly thinking..
wow, what image quality...superb.
Your equipment serves your vision faithfully.
Maybe not in the swans (lovely btw)
...where you mention some distraction.
But here it is a flawless servant.
Nice works..refreshing presentation.

Hello Dirk,

Very nice. The story of love comes through very clear. Each frame tells a small part of the story. As I went through, I was thinking it felt like a first date. She was looking very interested in the conversation. He was looking cool and posturing. The little girl then broke the spell. Now I wonder if this was a first date or a family out for dinner, or a single mom making new friends. BTW, I also like untidy ending in stories. They make me think. Thanks for the ride...

Hi, Dirk.

Great for me to drop by and see another excellent set from you. Been too busy thinking and shopping about the Nikon D70. The anticipation is killing me and keeping me from going out and doing some shooting w/ my G3 despite the kinder weather of late.

Anyway, love this sequence. I'm amazed at how people don't seem to mind your camera pointing at all over there in Belgium. Is this still the Nikon 105mm DC? Very tempting lens, but out of my range really. I bought the 85mm f/1.8 instead and hope the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 will be useful for longer distance candids even though it's a much heftier lens. I doubt 105mm would be enough reach for this kind of candids over here in NYC. Is the defocusing feature really that useful?

Well, enough equipment talk. :-) Hope all is well w/ you and the 2point8 members.

Warm regards,

Man

LoL! Peter just had to come after me on that one. :-)

FWIW, based on similar photos from the past, I'd have to guess Dirk's using his beloved 105mm DC -- as I mentioned in my other post. He loves that lens for this type of shooting. Makes me want to get one for the D70 too. :-) Of course, it's the photog (and his vision!) that matters, not too much the gear...

Hi Peter,

Oh yes and sorry that my answer is coming so late. And yes couples in love are so amazing, I saw recently a couple walking in the streaming rain and not with the right clothes for that weather but they didn't bother, their faces where pure sunshine. I was hiding in my car and jumped out to make some fast shots and risk damage to my camera (will see if I can find them back to show them).

Here's a link to a series that I've made years ago called Spring fools, unbelievable what spring can do with people: http://users.skynet.be/blueprint/springfools.html

Hé and glad that I could lead you to fine memories, I loved to read the description. All the very best.

Hi Mark,

Thanks a lot. Not that close, I was sitting two tables behind them and I used my favorite 105mm DC (157mm on the S2). I know that I invade the privacy but try to do it in a way that is not to obvious. I was thinking a moment on asking them if I may photograph them, then I would have been able to use better angles but the spontanity would have been gone. On the other side untill now I never had problems with people that I photographed, most of them don't bother or even like it and some are even very cooperative.

Hi Mark,

Thanks very much. Here a part of cafés and restaurants is reserved for non smokers by law but it's a quite small part so the non smokers are in a room with a lot of smoke.

Hi Man,

Aha, between friends we can talk about everything in my opinion, that's what make posting here so enjoying. We talked before about music, the Chinese language and other things, why not about gear.

And your guess is right Man, well seen. And thanks for the comment, it is about vision but a fine lens like the 105 can put an exclamation behind the picture and that's also worthy.
