Whats the price of kit like in Dubai compaired to the UK. Can anyone recomend any decent camera stores out there ?

The only prices I've checked in Dubai are at the duty free store at the airport and honestly I don't think they're that good. For one thing, a lot of their stock is old (eg in the computing section they're selling a Riva TNT2 Ultra graphics card and the box must be 5 years old).

In Dubai itself, I couldn't say.

Not as good as they were reputed to be.

It depends on what camera you would like to get.

For Pentax, try Salam Studio at Wafi City Mall.
For Nikon, try Grand Stores at Burjuman Mall, or inside the Emirates Towers.
For Canon, you may try anywhere, but go to City Center Mall.

Other brands are also available, like Olympus, Minolta, etc. that can be found anywhere as well.

If you would like a non-DSLR and like to bargain, go to Nasser Square in Deira.

I was there in November 03, and the prices were not that good; sometimes more expensive if you add on VAT (which HMC&E will wnat you to pay). If you shopped around in UK/Europe, you'd get better prices.

That was in the city, the airport is more expensive. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam was cheaper.
 
I was in Dubai last weekend, and my search for Canon and it's accessories was rather frustrating.

"National" who is the agent for Canon has some funny price list. The 420EX is priced at 900Dhs, which is totally off.

I like to shop at "Sharaf" on Al-Fahidi Street, only because the guys behind the counter are not totally ignorant.

Salam Studios, and just about everywhere I went, either they didn't have anything available (could be because it was just after the shopping festival), or their prices were toally screwed up.

The DFS at the airport looked like they were having a "going out of business" sale.... They had pretty much nothing other than the usual point and shoots in stock.

I would definitely try to get things in the UK.

I went to one of the big new malls (City Gate, Deira City Centre). They seemed to have the best selection, comparable prices, and also seemed to be a little bit more knowledgable and friendly.

They weren't too keen on negotiating much on the camera, but the flash card was quite sharply priced.

OK then, for the Sigma, go to City Center mall and as you go in, on your right, then left, three or four shops passed to your left again, you will find a small shop that will have all the Sigma lenses you'll need for any mount. The shop owners seem to be Indian or Pakistani and they're very knowledgeable and helpful.

I'm unfortunately forgetting the name of the shop, but you won't miss it.

It's on ground floor, btw.

Hi,

I'm an American expat living in Dubai. If you are looking for the best price then I would consider buying off the internet. It's cheaper for me to buy my electronics off the internet and have it shipped here. Shipping is generally around $50-$200. I bought a Yamaha receiver for $375, paid another $130 to have it shipped from California to Dubai, and it was still cheaper than buying the identical model here. I was really surprised as the Yamaha receiver was about 30% more expensive than normal because I purchased the 220/110V model i(which is hard to find in America) instead of the normal 110V model.

I bought a DVD player for $50, added another $50 for shipping, and got the higher model for less than buying the lower model in Dubai which was more expensive than the higer model from the US (does that even make sense?)

I saw a Canon 1D in Deira City Center several months ago for 21,000 dirhams (around $5700). I think this is near double what you'd pay at that time from http://www.bhphoto.com

I also noticed it's cheaper to buy books from amazon.com and pay international shipping then to buy the identical book at the bookstore here, and this is buying one book at a time!
