Well, I took my brand new E-10 to it's first hockey game tonight, and thought I'd post a sample of the shots I took at the game. The glass at the rink wasn't the cleanest, and you can see that in a few of the pics, but I have to say I was pleased with the way the camera performed. This was my first outing with the camera, so I was trying to learn the controls while shooting.

Jim,

Very nice pictures, I wonder if you woud share a bit more information. Were you shooting with or without a flash, what settings were you using as far as shutter speed etc. and did you increase the ISO. Also did you adjust the white balance? Sorry for a lot of the questions, but they are nice shots and I'd like to learn from how you did it.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks Mike,

Well, I played around with the settings during the game so there is a mix of different shots in there. I didn't use a flash at all, since it would have caused a huge glare off the glass.

I actually had good luck luck shooting with the TCON-14B, setting the shutter speed to 1/250 and the ISO at 320 with the aperture set at F2.8. I took about half the shots that way, and the other half with the shutter speed set at 1/200, ISO 160 and the apertrue was set at F2.4. I shot most shots with shutter priority.

I did set up the white balance during warm-ups before the game, but forgot to reset it when they turned on the last bank of lights at the start of the game, so the pictures were a little off when I got home last night. I just did a quick tweak in photoshop to fix that and then cropped some of the pictures before uploading them.

Hope that helps a bit. I'm going to try to take more pictures tonight and see if I can't nail down which setting gave me the best results.

Excelent action shots!
please post more...

James,

The quality of your action shots is why I'm going to use my Nikon 990 for a second camera and buy an E-10. I've tried taking photos at Ranger games from the good seats, and was very disappointed. Action photography and Nikon 990 can't be mentioned in the same breath. Great shots!!

Thanks!! I'm really happy with this camera, and now I have to say I'm glad I chose it over the E-100 which was top on my list for a while. The quality of the images is great, and I guess I realized tonight that I really didn't need that 15 shot a second speed to catch some good action shots.

I shot another batch of photos at tonight's game and they are there if you'd like to check them out. I think I shot exclusively at 1/200 and ISO 320 tonight.

I'd love to see the shots you get at the Ranger games if you pick one of these babies up. I think you'll like what you see.

Here's the new link for those that are interested.

Good to see some else doing hockey shots with the E-10. I have been shooting for the Minnestoa Wild's Web site and have used the Nikon 990 and now the E-10.

You can see samples at my Web site:

http://www.pixelagogo.com/wildwebimages/index.htm

along with all the shooting info. I started off using the 320 ISO, but have now moved down to 160 for a bit cleaner images. All of mine are around a stop or so underexposed to get me to the 1/320 at 2.4, but clean up in PS just fine. WB set to the ice when all the TV lights are on and remember to select "0" ( I got burned on that one the first time.) I have printed many 8x10s at the online shop http://www.ezprints.com and give them to the players and they look as good as film. The "noise" you see on a Epson print goes away with the photographic printing technique and become smooth photos.

Have fun shooting the "fastest sport on ice"

Thank you Cory for a nice blast of fresh air from North America.

Your hockey pictures are great! I really miss hockey now ;-)

PS. I assume none of you guys can get pictures of the Montreal Canadiens? (yeah, I know, they're not doing well now (!)) Go Habs Go!?!

Cory,

As a Ranger fan I really appreciated the shot of the lone Ranger fan standing up and cheering. I noticed that the 990 shots are static and the E-10 shots show action. That's why I need to get an E-10. Keep up the good work.

Nice shots - I'd say you are learning the controls quite rapidly!

Thanks for the additional information; I have tickets to a Philadelphia 76'ers basketball game, and also a Harlem Globetrotters game in the next several weeks and plan on taking the E10 to the games. I hope I can do near as well as you, although for now I don't have the TCON-14B, sure looks like a nice accesory to have. The information you provided will help.

James, fan-tastic work. But it prompts a question. About a year ago, I took my son to Detroit to see the Wings/Ducks. As we were entering they asked to see my D600 and checked it for a telephoto lens which they said was not permitted. Since the D600 tel is internal they couldn't figure it out, and let me take it in. I just assumed this was a general NHL rule.

You indicated you post to the Wild web site, so were you allowed to use the TCON-1.45B with your press pass and the general public would not be permitted to do the same? I only ask as I probably will take in a Blue Jacket game and don't want to have my camera conficated.

Thanks for your input.

Cory,

I found some of your comments on DPReview and have been admiring the hockey shots on your website. I am faced with shooting a "little-league" hockey tournament this weekend with my E-10 and noticed that you have had quite a bit of experience in that particular arena. Which teleconvertor, in your opinion, gave you the best results...

A. Olympus B-300
B. Canon C-8
C. Olympus Tcon-14B
D. No Teleconvertor

I noticed that in your more recent game photos you either stopped using the teleconvertor or just stopped commenting on which one you were using. Incidentally, I think the photos from the more recent games improved in quality and composition over some of the first games!

I would really appreciate knowing your honest opinion if it's really worth using one of these teleconverters... or not... and what the drawbacks are of each. I'm also posting this message on DPReview.

Thanks a bunch,

Jon

Hey There,

For some reason, the link doesn't work. Obviously other people have seen your pics so maybe the problem is on my end. I can't wait to see those pics. My friend plays occasionally in Vancouver, BC.

Jon,

Visited your website on Zing and WOW!! Nice pics! I especially like the county building and the little boy with the Old Navy hat on. Really nice work. I have bookmakrked the site for future viewing. Also, the dog with the newspaper was stunning! Could you tell me the camera settings for that one? I'm assuming flash. Any manipulation afterwards?

Thanks for sharing,

Ron, a new E-10 owner.

Ron,

The dog pic on Zing was taken with the FL-40 aimed straight at an 8' white ceiling, which acts like a giant soft box. The built in flash was also raised (dual flash). There was no manipulation done afterwards.

I have found that I love to shoot with the FL-40 used as a "bounce" flash. When used on the ceiling, it provides for almost perfect even lighting and shadow fill as you can see. Here's another sample using the same technique, but only with the FL-40 and not the built in flash.

Notice the catchlights in my nephew's eyes. Notice also this technique is useful in helping to eliminating glare on glasses.
