I wonder if anyone could advise as to the best software to use for storing photos on a CD. I am thinking of something that would allow you to create something similar to a Picture CD. Thanks

the problem with pics2exe is that it makes only an exe file with all your pics in it, that means it is NOT usable for archival/storage purposes...

i've been looking for awhile for a good solution, i've yet to find it...making html thumbnail pages is the best i've found so far, and that's not really optimal but at least it's cross-platform...

Gawaine,

Try Adaptec's EZ CD Creator. Another good burning program is NTI CD MAKER PRO. If you have a burner, it most likely came bundeled with a program like one of these. Use that. Just DO NOT USE DIRECT CD. Direct CD is easy, but in order to read from a CD that was burned with Direct CD, the computer reading the CD must have Direct CD installed, which can turn out to be a pain if you bring the CD with you to your relative's or friend's house that does not have it.

Check out FotoAlbum from http://www.fototime.com . FotoAlbum has a very easy to use way for you to put your pictures on a CD.

Thank you those of you who replied. I downloaded a trial of pics2exe and it looks like a very useful little program. However I am still not sure how to achieve my goal. If you get a film developed and get the pictures scanned onto a cd, you get it back with the pictures organised in thumbnails and a little program to run the pictures on your computer. How is that done? How can I create cds like my local photo developer does? I am sure I am being dumb about this but any suggestions gratefully received

Gawaine, here's my 2 cents worth, I could be wrong, or going about it the round-a-bout way, as I have yet to do what you want myself. However, knowing about computer storage, here goes:

First a question for you...do you have a cd writer? you'll need that. lets assume you do.

Treat your picture files as any old data, thats all it is anyway. Using the software that came with your writer, such as Adaptec, transfer your picture files to a cd-r as you would say a written document. Difference being it will be a data file rather than an audio file (for music).

Now your pictures will be stored in 2 places, your hard drive and your new CD you just made.

Use any software program that will "read" Jpeg, files, assuming you saved them as such, and open the pictures by putting the cd in the player, cd or dvd, doesnt matter....go to your D, E, or whatever drive is the CD player, and import the files to the software program for viewing. Just as you would if it were a document.
All you need to do is be carefull how you organize your files for easy referal.

Once you are satisfied your pictures are safely stored AND you can view them, it is safe to delete them from your hard drive and free up space.
I think this will work, but if anyone has or does it a better way I'm all ears.
post back with any questions. Bob

I think that what you are trying to do will take at least two pieces of software. You should get your hands on a thumbnail viewer and database program like thumbs+ or ACDSee. This allows you to organize your photos ,store them on your hard-drive and retrieve/view them easily.

Then you need a cd burning software to put the stuff on a cd if you wish to for storage or backup. For this I like Nero Burning. I have adaptec cd creator and have had problems with it. Nero just works for me.

as i said, i've been looking for awhle and haven't found much...

as far as i know there are no programs to write a kodak photo cd, it's a proprietary format and either kodak refuses to lisence it or it's way to expensive...

http://www.cpicture.de/en.html is a good program to make html thumbnail pages...burn these with your pics and then find a program that will autorun an HTML file (i don't remember any names)...

i've got about 4 gigs worth of pics on my system, i'm really loath to burn them all until i settle on a format in which to do it...so far i'm still looking...

Thanks again to all those who replied. I have found a possible solution at http://www.photodex.com with a program called CompuPic Pro which incorporates a Picture CD program. I am downloading a trial version so will post back to let you know how I get on. The full program retails for $99.99, so its a little pricey, but if it works worth it. thanks again for your help

it is most definatly NOT worth the $100 price tag...all it does is put a crappy viewer in the root which can only see pics that are also in the root...no thumbnails on the cd (for faster access) or folder browsing...this is not a substitute for a kodak photo cd...

ACDSee is a much better viewer for a cheaper price...
