my own 828 - g5 comparison

going home from work today i stopped at an electronic-store and
asked if i could try out their sony dcc-828 as i also had my canon
g5 with me so i could exchange my cf-card and take some shots with
both.
i couldn't take too many photos though, because the shopman seemed
a bit nerved. this way the photos i took inside all got blurred
because of handshake (probably because i was nervous too ;-)
but i was able to get out and also take one shot from the streetside.

of course the focal length was different from both cameras, so the
images are different, but as the canon has a longer focal length at
wideangle and a lower resolution the images become accidentaly
quite compareable in size...

I also work at Best Buy in the digital imaging dept. I am able to
test many cameras before buying, I've spent lots of time testing
and comparing the 300D, 828, FujiS7000, and the G5. I printed
samples on an HP 7760 from all the cameras. The 828 was my most
recent purchase. I didn't buy it for it's 8mp. I bought it for the
mech. zoom, cf slot+memory stick, and the excellent detail it was
able to capture. I have to say that of all the non-slr digitals,
the g-5 was probably the best performer overall until the 828
showed up. I absolutely love the canon images, don't know if it's
the digic processor or what but they looked great even when
enlarged several times. I liked the 828 because of the mechanical
zoom, I will never go back to the electric zoom after using it. The
build quality is awesome, it feels like a real camera. The power up
time is very fast (main complaint with the 300D) and shutter lag is
almost not there. As far as noise is concerned, I'm coming from
35mm where I shoot 800 speed quite often so the 828 grain at 400 or
even 800 doesn't really bother me. I also use neat image if it gets
to bad. Much better to capture the shot and have noise then to not
capture the shot at all. My only complaints with the 828 are of
course the pf. It's easily dealt with and I remind myself that any
camera to include my Nikon N80 are capable of producing some kind
of chromatic abberation. With the g-5 it seemed to be blue fringing
instead of purple. ANyway, both are great cameras more than capable
of pro quality images however the 828 definitely has the g-5 beat
as far as image quality is concerned.
I should hope so! The 828 is NEW and the G5 is essentially 'last years' model. I have to say that this thread is really trying to compare apples and oranges. The 828 SHOULD be compared to the new Canon models like the Pro1.

yeah the 828 may have beaten the G5, but a G5 is half of it's price. The 828 will have to answer to the pro1 now. But great comparison anyway.

In all honesty if f-828 have any bragging rights is certainly not in the image quality department.
Is in speed.
This is was Dave from Imaging Resource said in his f-828 review conclusion.
"The fastest prosumer digicam on the planet? - Maybe so..."

The comparison here is between the g-5 and the 828. Apples to oranges of course. Both are capable of superb images. The G-5 is in a different class than the 828, not to mention it's half the price. No one is bragging but the 828's image quality to me is better than the 828. I have both, use both, I know so I can say it.

I really wish there were an edit function here...

Good info, Joe, but from Oluv's shots, the G5 is a clear winner on detail, brightness, and CA. Close call on dynamic range. I still haven't found any camera short of an SLR that beats a G5 on image quality straight out of the box. And I haven't even bought one yet!

I'm afraid Marla hit it on the button when she said "BTW, you can't imagine how much that f2.0 one stop difference means in low light, and even helps with camera shake. They are amazing cameras IMO."

I'm re-thinking my almost-decision to go with the Pro1 or 8080 because all the G5 contenders seem to be pretenders, and the G5 is $420 now.

and.....thanks for the comments.

Question: where is the G5 $420?

Comment: IMO, you might want to grab the G5......soon....as from what I hear and see, the G5 will soon be discontinued. I got this info at a seminar I attended 2 weeks ago.

Recently I was at B&H and asked the Canon rep (they have a full time Canon representative working in the Canon portion of their store with his own BIG display of cameras, etc.). He said he was going to Canon this week and he will try to find out what the scoop is on the G5. So, if I get back there I'll post any news he brings back ??

Let me know; I'm afraid I'm going to get trapped by my Hamlet-like condition between the G5 and Pro1 and end up with neither! I need someone to make my mind up for me soon. :-) (Still thinking about the 8080 also)

HowdyCamera has the G5 in stock (so they claim) for $415. Zoommania has it for $430.

Just that I don't know if I can live without the wide angle. If the Pro1 is just as good, rather wait and get the extra focal lengths and don't mind paying more. But will it be as good??

This proves that even well developed camera manufacturer as sony and canon, they can only get lucky with certain models, it is not about brand, but about the specific model that can turn out to be a big hit like the 717.

Yes, the 828 do shows certain image defects in terms of image quality that I don't like and for which I would not pay that amount of money, but I do like sony overal image color and feel as compared to image from canon. If you look at the full shot of the city, I like the feel from the sony image better than the washout, blurry, hazy look produced by the g5.

just my two cents...

See, that is all fanatisim, I don't think is so much about brands, but just about lucky models, like a good song hiting the charts... Which could come from any artist, in this case any of the big brands.

New round Sony may produce another 717 that nothing on its range/age could produce comparable image quality, including the G5.

All brands have had their sucess, for example I don't think Nikon will ever produce another 990, or Olympus another 2020 or ius, just like canon with the G3, they all have had their moments...

Hmmm.....A $500.00 G5 holding it's own against a $1000.00 Sony.
That makes me smile:-) Go Canon!

I think the G5 won on your image test.
On the crop 1 images, the colors shown on the G5 is much better.
On the crop 2 images, F828 image is sharper.
On the purple fringe images, F828 image is just plain nasty.
On the full images, G5 image shows much better colors and details.

Shame on me, I sold my G5 and i was thinking about getting the F828 for my spring break vacation, but then i'll just wait for the Pro1 to show up to make my final purchase decision between it and the A2.
Thanks

Even worse is how some people are buying this 828 cr@p, like crazy.
It's not a 'cr@p' camera. It's a well built camera capable of some
excellent results.

It's by no means perfect, but clueless, provocative comments like
yours achieve nothing.
Greetings.

If I may inject my 2 cents here, I almost bypassed the Sony 828 precisely because of the negative comments about CA and noise. However, at the time, it was the only 8 MP digicam out there, and the Zeiss optics had influenced my decision to give it a try. Personally, I have experienced very few shots with evident CA, and since I shoot at lower ISO as a rule, the noise issue was just that...noise! For 2 sample shots from this fine camera, please check out:
http://www.totalqualityphoto.com/search.i?cmd=quick&catid=&search=row

The first two shots (the Trees and the Guitars) were shot with a tripod-mounted F828. I think this shows that with proper technique, a quality image can indeed be obtained from this camera! (Indeed, I enlarged the Tree shot to 16x20 with excellent results.)
Thanks,
Steve
