Roses in Winter

I can only think of two reasons why nobody commented on my picture, it really sucked or it was greatness.

Ah, thanks for everyone's opinion, appreciate it! It must have really sucked and everyone was too embarassed and too busy laughing to comment.

Or, it must have been so good that people were felt unworthy to comment on such greatness.

Na, it was probably the first one...

Anyway, thanks for all the comments!

i'm sorry Scott..been entirely focused on super-zooms. the roses in a vase (right?) didn't really work for me personally, tho i see what you were going for and the thought is creative. actually the overall image--to me, and that's all opinions are--would have been better withOut the roses. i thought it was pretty good, honest :)

keep shootin!

Clearly you have a very high opinoin of yourself, so nothing we could say could possibly change that.

However your first assumption is correct, the photo sucks. I would suggest that you buy a photo editor and learn how to use it.

c'mon Glen, he's got a new camera and just wanted feedback. when/if i ever update my computer and software enuff to get a pic on here, would prolly also feel bad if no one said anything .

aw..he was kidding.

Karen, who appreciates the nervousness of newbs, being one herself

Glen,

I have been in Dpreview way too long to take any sarcasm seriously - so no, my feelings were not hurt. However, I was dissapointed that you failed to include why you think the photo 'sucked.' Yes I do have a photo editor - exactly what should have been done with the photo editor and this picture?

I will be switching over to Pbase because I don't like that we can't embed images into this forum using Fotki.

Anyway, since you have such a strong opinion, please include why you feel the photo sucked...

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks Karen. I've seen a lot of snow pictures and thought I could add a little something extra to make the snow picture different. I appreciate and respect your opinion - that's what I was looking for.

As for Glen, I kind of invited that kind of criticisim with my second post. I knew I could count on somebody like Glen to jump on the post right away and attract somebody more objective and sincere like you to comment on the picture.

Thanks again....
Scott

Thanks Daniel. I'm going to switch to Pbase so I can just embed the picture and maybe that will help. The original picture was uploaded to Fotki but it is how Fotki displays the image that makes it look small. I also noticed that after I uploaded the photos....

THanks again...
Scott
The pics look interesting but smallish on my monitor that I run at
1600 resolution. If you could post the original pics, more people
would get excited about them.

Thanks,
Daniel

Basically, the photo is too dark and muddy, there is no "snap", no contrast to the photo overall. You can barely SEE the rose overall, and the . . . vase? - Paper? whatever it is that the rose is in can not be identified.

try using Layers to bring the flower out.

'Freedom is not free; free men are not equal, and equal men are not free. If freedom is short of weapons, we must compensate with willpower.'

It was definately forced and after reading these comments, I clearly understand what everybody is talking about.

I like the idea I had, but I see where I failed in composing the look - in fact I didn't take any time in composing the image. I just chunked the vase/flowers up on the wall instead of taking time to 'naturally' integrate the roses into the scene.

Thank you very much for the comment... :-)
The scene looks very forced and unnatural, partly due to the rose,
but probably mostly due to the vase.

Yea, I knew what you meant and messed aound with the levels and it helped with bringing out the red like you said. But, I clearly understand what you all are saying about the vase not being 'natural.' I just chunked the vase up on the wall and took the picture without taking time to creatively compose the image - and tossed flowers on a wall is exactly what it looks like...
Thanks,
Scott

but you know what? that's fine. i play around constantly . think that's why photography has grabbed me so. there's so far to go and so much to learn, i.e. it won't bore me quickly.

tell me if i'm on track with this, had a thought about the concept you were going for:

sorta like pics i imagine we've all seen at one time or another, of a robin redbreast, sitting on a bare branch, snowy background. a harbinger of life/rebirth in the midst of winter?

Karen

Scott, think i see what you're going for in theme and with colors. isn't there some sort of plant with vivid, red berries that really Does produce in winter?

point being, even if you really didn't have that plant, could break off a few branches w/berries, have them coming up out of the snow and do a well-composed background. or make it a semi-macro.

along those general lines..

Karen

That sounds exactly like what I was going for. I was so impressed with the serene look of the snow that I didn't take any time in imagining the best position for the roses in the snow.

One person I think hit the nail on the head when it was mentioned the vase made the look unatural unlike when you see that robin on the tree with the snow background.

I messed around with the levels a little bit and brought out the red in the roses, but it's the vase. If I could have put the vase back deeper in the picture and buried the vase a little bit, the image might have looked better. But then I would have messed up the snow.

Anyway, I'm like you, I shoot all the time now. I love it!!!

I'm sure there is but I don't know the name, but I know what kind of scene you are talking about and that is kind of what I was going for.

I've had my camera since July and just now I'm starting to explore the creative side of photography. 10 years ago I would say that creative photography is boring and stupid. But, I am really starting to get hooked on this stuff now.

Check out these next two photos and tell me what you think. The first picture is the original picture, non-edited and the second picture is edited with Elements using levels and variations and then run through Neat Image.. I guess you know by now you can be perfectly honest.. haha Brutal truth!

Original:

And the edited image:
