going home from work today i stopped at an electronic-store and asked if i could try out their sony dcc-828 as i also had my canon g5 with me so i could exchange my cf-card and take some shots with both.

i couldn't take too many photos though, because the shopman seemed a bit nerved. this way the photos i took inside all got blurred because of handshake (probably because i was nervous too ;-)
but i was able to get out and also take one shot from the streetside.

of course the focal length was different from both cameras, so the images are different, but as the canon has a longer focal length at wideangle and a lower resolution the images become accidentaly quite compareable in size...

if you are interested look at my primitive comparison:

I had a G2 and G3 until I got the Rebel 300D. I wouldn't trade any other digital point & shoot for either of those cameras. I just bought a used G2 to carry around with me for $300 and I'm sooooooo happy I found it.

The G5 is an excellent camera. The G2 and G3 cameras are very difficult to find and very expensive for the most part when you do find them. The G5 is supposed to be discontinued next month and I think people will be looking just as hard for this camera even with it's cons. Just one person's opinion from my experience. BTW, you can't imagine how much that f2.0 one stop difference means in low light, and even helps with camera shake. They are amazing cameras IMO.

Hmmm.....A $500.00 G5 holding it's own against a $1000.00 Sony. That makes me smile:-) Go Canon!

Where did you get the used G2 - from a friend or at a store?

Thanks for posting.
Very interesting.
Did you made both shots at the aperture?.

If so I don't know how Sony can sell this stuff for $1000 when you can have G5 for half of that.
Even worse is how some people are buying this 828 cr@p, like crazy.
If f828 was sold for $500 maybe I'd consider it seriously.
But only for the zoom range.

i shot both at 4,5 to have a compareable image. the only difference was the focal length. unfortunately i didn't have enough time to get deeper into it. it was also very hard to find the right menus in the sony, because the first image i took was tiff, and it lasted forever to save it. so i wanted to change the settings but couldn't find the right menus.

but on the other hand the sony felt very good in my hands, it feels like a "real" camera, and the zoom and manual focus ring is very good.

well maybe with the 939 everything will become more interesting :)

well the 828 is not overall sharper. look at the first two crops in my example. the g5 shows much more detail here.

i am not sure if my lens is 100% allright, because once i had already 1 shot were the bottom part of the image was somehow blurred. but after various tests at home i couldn't repeat this error...

what made me think a bit was the high noise amount in the 828 image, and the less sensitive 64iso setting.

if the all mock around about the g5's noise, they should become crazy about sony's...

It's not a 'cr@p' camera. It's a well built camera capable of some excellent results.

It's by no means perfect, but clueless, provocative comments like yours achieve nothing.

I'm pondering over which new camera to buy, and it's currently a very close thing between the Canon Pro1, Olympus 8080 and Minolta A2.

I've been using Sony's for years - the 717 remains a very, very fine camera - but I'm after something a little smaller.

That said, the 828 is a beautifully finished camera: I've not tried the Pro1 yet, but the Minolta A2 felt like a plasticky toy in comparison to Sony's solid form.

sorry if this is a duplicate, but couldn't find my last reply.

I found the G2 on KEH.com. The rating was LN- (Like New Minus) which they explained - means the body has to be in almost new condition, but it may not include the box, etc. He said it can have very slight markings on it that you know it's been handled, but you have to look for them.

He also told me they get G2's and G3's in frequently. He said they get them from dealers and they have to be in almost perfect condition. I wondered if mine was a demo, but since I've dealt with KEH a few times previously, I know they stand behind their products, and trust their equipment is as they say it is.

As far as I can see I do not believe the extra cost or the quality of the image is that significantly better I' ll stick with my G-5 and A-1 minolta

interesting in purchasing a G3?

Image quality aside, unless your into small cams, the 828 is a thing of beauty and a joy to hold and use. No comment on image quality.

What sharpening, in-camera or afterward, was applied to the images?

I also work at Best Buy in the digital imaging dept. I am able to test many cameras before buying, I've spent lots of time testing and comparing the 300D, 828, FujiS7000, and the G5. I printed samples on an HP 7760 from all the cameras. The 828 was my most recent purchase. I didn't buy it for it's 8mp. I bought it for the mech. zoom, cf slot+memory stick, and the excellent detail it was able to capture. I have to say that of all the non-slr digitals, the g-5 was probably the best performer overall until the 828 showed up. I absolutely love the canon images, don't know if it's the digic processor or what but they looked great even when enlarged several times. I liked the 828 because of the mechanical zoom, I will never go back to the electric zoom after using it. The build quality is awesome, it feels like a real camera. The power up time is very fast (main complaint with the 300D) and shutter lag is almost not there. As far as noise is concerned, I'm coming from 35mm where I shoot 800 speed quite often so the 828 grain at 400 or even 800 doesn't really bother me. I also use neat image if it gets to bad. Much better to capture the shot and have noise then to not capture the shot at all. My only complaints with the 828 are of course the pf. It's easily dealt with and I remind myself that any camera to include my Nikon N80 are capable of producing some kind of chromatic abberation. With the g-5 it seemed to be blue fringing instead of purple. ANyway, both are great cameras more than capable of pro quality images however the 828 definitely has the g-5 beat as far as image quality is concerned.

i did nothing to the pictures, they are straight out of the camera.
the sharpening-artefacts that appear in the sony-image must be in-camera!
What sharpening, in-camera or afterward, was applied to the images?
