thanks for input and photos from the d70. as an intro, used to shoot with a nikkormat with fixed 28, 50, and 70-210 zoom, night shots, etc. went digital 11/00 with coolpix 880. talk about total frustration, delays, etc.

i've been thinking about upgrading and resuming hobby, especially given endless film with cf cards. been thinking about the d70, and from what i've seen, though the coolpix 8700 seems "easy", would rather have the flexibility of an slr.

going to wait, hopefully not forever, to get my hands on a d70 to see whats up with it. though have a 24x 512Mb Lexar card, not going to get a bigger card till they come out with their 80x cards in May (why waste money on a 40x now).

btw, bh photovideo, willing to give me 125 for 880 with spare battery, nikon wide and tele lenses, remote cable, and digislave 3000 flash and bracket, so not sure i'm going to give it to them for "free". may check with adorama.

if anyone has suggestions/opinions about logic of getting d70 vs 8700, (looked at the other nikon forum here and very few threads) i'm all ears.

After many years using the Nikon F3, I took the plunge into digital photography with a CP5700. While a wonderful camera in many ways, I have become frustrated by its shutter lag and slow autofocus, and have just placed my order for a D70. Unless the 8700 has improved performance in those areas, opt for the dSLR.

thanks, for input, that's most likely what i'm going to do.

This may or may not be the forum for it but, I have been thinking about upgrading the last month or so. Since my daughter was born (and I have a while bunch of c-rap pictures of her from my Fujipix 6800) I've been scouring the various forums here. I think I may have narrowed things down do one of either a Nikon D70 or a Leica Digilux 2 (the reason being that Leica will retain its value and the DSLR's will improve significantly over the next few years, though the D70 is sexy). I realise I may be comparing apples and pears but in the end, I'll probaby end up with more than one camera anyhow. Judging by my old SLR's, I know this to be the case.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure the Leica will be as "obsolete" proof as the Nikon. When the technology improves, as it inevitably will, you can always get a new Nikon body and keep the existing lens, whereas with the Leica, the lens will be tied to an obsolete body.
I think I may

Digilux 2 (the reason being that Leica will retain its value and

While 8 mp is lucrative, the D70 will offer far more control
and larger sensor has much less noise. If you are outputting
at 8x10, 11x14 or and occasional 8x20, 6 mp is plenty.
Look at the layout of the D70. Fantastic! You can take the
lenses with you and the D70 body will give great pics for
many moons.

Personally, I would not think about residual value in a camera anymore. I still have Leica, Hassies, Sinars, F3s etc. One of the reason I bought and used these great cameras, beside getting very good photos, is the resale value. However, with DSLR and technology products, I think no one wants an "old" camera in 12 months because there will be better, cheaper, faster cameras with more features by then. Buy according to your present and short term needs and forget about keeping the camera for your child to use when she is 15.
Any thoughts?

Look at it this way, when you next want to upgrade, your 8700 goes into the trash bin. But with DSLR, the glass will still be useable, if you keep to the same system.

I don't have the 8700 to test and I'm sure it is a great digicam but I would not want to use one now that D70 is priced so competitively.

Wait a few more months and I can imagine D70 pricing to be lowered by maybe 10% 15%.

Hey Ken,

I'd say the D70 all the way, unless you really prefrence size. With the D70 you'r going to get greater battery life, better depth seperation and better image stability. Since most people have large hands, they tend to hold SLR's firmer.

Check out the 5700 from nikon, it's the same size so you can get a feel for the camera.

Might I also suggest getting your camera from a dealer that let's you return it or exchange it for free (ritz comes to mind : ))

As for the 880, you can get more for it, "IF YOU DOOOO IT EEEEEEEEBAAAAAY!" (Insert music here)
