D70 JPG out of the box

I pre-ordered the D70 2 weeks ao and got the Kit on Friday ( Feb 27) from Cathy Photo at SGD2100 (includes 5% tax). According to the sales person, they only have limited sets for the pre-ordered customers.

Have read through the manual and had some test shots. PhotoShop CS Raw 2.1 doesn't work, not sure the reason. Have downloaded Capture 4 and will try it out..

Here is a jpg from D70. Shot on Auto WB, f/5.6 70mm with the
18~70mm lens. I like the dynamic range and the accuracy of the
meter. I think this camera produces better out-of-box jpg than my
D100. I cannot comment yet on RAW files because without NC 4.1 I
cannot compare.

Hi Henry

How much did you pay for the D70 in Singapore? I guess you bought
it as a kit with the 18-70mm?

Above photo taken by my daughter (it's her D70) on her first day out with the camera. Photo was shot in a dim basement wet market.

I find that the WB of image is a bit too warm. I put the image through iCorrect Editlab and it too indicated that there was a slight yellow overcast. The edited image is compared side by side with the original below:

I find a similar yellowish tint in other user-posted images as well. What do you guys think?

Your pictures look great!

Even though those are not large sized pictures, resolution looks really great!

I'm just wondering how original pictures look like. If you don't mind can you send me originals by e-mail, please? Then I'll find an adequate server and post them. Sorry if I'm so rude. ^^;

Best Regards.

you missed the point. We posted the photo without any WB corrections for users to judge what the D70 will produce.

We all know how to work PS and NC I'm sure. :))

I processed the files but because it was NV, I really could do no more than open NEF, set sharpen to LOW, save as JPG, open in PS, resize and save for web. I think that qualifies as out of the box for an NEF.

Henry.

I'll let her know she has your support and encouragement. Thanks.
The Auto WB looks very good, esp the market shot, with it's odd
lighting, and very slow shutter speed. OK, now do tell, did you
have to do all the processing of these, or did you show her how to
do that so soon? Tell her she's on her way to being a Pro!

I was just commenting on the accuracy of the camera's AWB. I'm sure we all want to get the best color balance out-of-the-box so that we could minimise the amount of post-processing work required in our digital workflow.

The AWB of the street pic is also a bit off. This time with a slight cyan/green tint.

That said, the AWB of in-door market pic under fluorescent lighting is very good. Many DSLRs would probably have a problem taking this pic using AWB.
