Portrait shooting? Too Shy!

girlfriend?

she has been your model right?
after a couple of weeks she became your girl.
hahaha LOL!

:-)
Hi Black

I was a student (fashion photography) about ten years ago & had to
do two shoots a week as part of the course. The college wasn't in a
city so there were no model agencies around so the only way to get
models was go up to girls on the street, in a bar, library,
whatever & ask them.

What was even more embarrassing was because it was a fashion shoot,
I had to do the stylist job as well & go into women's clothes shops
& beg to borrow the clothes...believe me if you can do that then
the asking girls to model for you is the easy bit.

Always carry a card around that you can give them so they can think
about it & contact you, don't ask for their phone number! It's
probably easier nowadays as maybe you have a web site address you
can give them so they can check you out.

Mostly people (male or female) are flatter that you ask them. I
spent a whole year doing it & not one person refused & I'm now an
expert in shopping for clothes for my girlfriend!

Good luck

Iggy

what about going to exhibitions/expo's like car/motor-events?
there are good looking girls/models for sure.
i go often and i ask (ofcourse being SHY) these girls to pose for me.

so go to events, you will get a BIG chance to shoot a girl.

Hi!

In another thread we talked about photographing in public,
especially with a tripod. Many of you replied, and it was vrey
interesting. So, I think there is one more aspect to look at:

Portrait shooting.

Especially: How do you get your model. I mean, its no problem to
shoot your aunt, your dad, your mom or your daughter. So, the
people who already have children have it more easy.

But for me, its always the same problem: You want to find someone
to make portrait shots. Maybe even only for exercise. In my
attempt, it would be a girl, because I am a boy, and even the girls
will admit that shooting girls faces and bodys (I do not mean nude
shots :P) is a very lovely and nice thing. But you have to find a
girl first, that looks amazing (Dont laugh, its fact.). Then, you
have not to be shy and ask her for what you want. AND, then, you
have to convince her you are not doing this because you want to
date her.

If you are a professional photographer, beeing older, or selling
your pictures seriously, you will face fewer problems. But if you
are the same age, shooting just for fun - well....

And, yes, i think more often than not, the wish to make portrait
shots is the hidden wish for that person. Or what do you think?
What do yiu feel and how is your point of view?

Nice advice!

Unfortunately I just finished school... :)

Maybe when I start studying.
I didn't read the whole thread...but you know what I found in college?

...that when I would casually talk to some of the girls that I was
aquaintances with (classmates or dormmates), and just mention that
I was taking studio photgraphy....

(..you know...I usually just mentioned it because we'd be
discussing our schedules and it would come up in the list of
classes...anyway...)

...Many times the girl would all of a sudden be interested and
start asking questions. Several times, by the end of the
conversation, I had a new subject for portraits and poses.....and,
depending on the girl, I even had nude models a few times.

...and I never asked. They always offered (it never felt right for
me to ask....or maybe I was too shy).

Moral of the story....beats me. Maybe ya gotta be in school?

Hi Cindy, an adult male might get a different reaction, although I have read here that some guys will take the time to put the mothers at ease. ~ m²
I have the same problem being shy about it. When it comes to kids
and their parents they get really weird if you want to take a
picture of their kid. I usually just say "may I take a picture" and
I have gotton a 100% yes. Only problem I didnt know to get release
forms so I cant use these:

I feel pretty confident that if you wore a bright sandwich board
announcing what you were up to with your gear at your side, nobody
would think you wanted to date them. ;)
Providing you are wearing clothing as well :P

I have never read that you need to approach strangers on the street with a model release if you have taken their picture as a character study. If you are showing them in an online gallery but not for sale they aren't commercial in nature. ~ m²
Here are a few examples of strangers. They can be quite
interesting. I took these before I understood that I need to have a
signed release before I use any of them. It was before I used RAW
too. This is just to give you ideas.

I knew that street candids required no permission let alone contracts, but it's always best to use sugar instead of vinegar in the majority of situations. Nonetheless, I will carry this in my holster as well. ~ m²

I got it easy! I work with a girl and her mother (same shop). Her mother brought in a showed a photo from herself posing in the mid sixties and her daughter mentioned she'd like to do some.....so I offered. Then she decided she wanted to do topless, mayb eeven nude.....I mentioned maybe down at the beach....and she agreed!

We do the shoot this weekend! I didn't ask her!

No, Im sure I can take them and post them online but I could never use them for anything commercial. I do graphic design and I could not use them without the release form. A couple of the pictures of street people would probably never be a problem however.

I really am shy about it. That is why I used a 75-300 IS for most of these :) I was at quite a distance and on some occasions people didnt even know I was taking their picture.

I accidently just posted a reply in the link you provided so I will post it again here.

My concern is not whether I can take the picture but rather publication and copyright. pBase is not a commercial site but I do have commercial sites and technically I think I cannot post these pictures there although I am not as worried about them on the web as I would be if someone wanted to print them in a brochure they were making 50,000 of.

Yes, valid point :)

You should however be able to post them on a commercial site as an example of your photography.

I haven't seen you in the Lighting Techniques forum. I didn't know you were doing studio shots.

Yes, it worked!
