Hi all

I want to know if I can use the LCD for taking pics, like what we can do in other digital camera. I now have a Sony P9 camera and the image quality is really bad. Are the image quality better than Sony P9?

Lastly, I am not a professional, can I use this camera efectively or you need professional know how to get the results.

Please reply asap, as I will decide with in a few days to buy or not.

Cheers

No, you cannot use the LCD for taking pic. There is a mirror in the way that only allows you to compose shots using the viewfinder. The image quality is astounding. The camera uses the same sensor as the near professional 10D. The camera has different settings that you can use that will allow the camera to make the exposure for you, but if you cant to take control at any time there are 4 creative modes to use also. The basic modes have much less of a elarning curve than the creatives.

Nope, u can't.

SLR have a mirror in front of the ccd(or cmos) so it's only when u press the shutter that the mirror flip to let the light reach the ccd to take the pic.

If you want to be able to aim with the lcd, then don't choose slr...

Hi there,

1) no, you can´t use the LCD for taking pictures with 300D. That´s because it´s a DSLR camera, which means you see through the lenses and get the correct view of what the camera will really "see" when you shoot. Because the light doesn´t reach the sensor until you shoot, the LCD doesn´t "see" the scene :-(

2) I don´t know the picture quality of SONY P9 (4MP), but I do have a SONY S75 (3MP) which is able to produce very good quality pictures, but it´s a different kind of camera when compared to P9. It has Av, Tv and Manual controls and the lens is also better (Carl Zeiss). Nevertheless, the quality of the pictures taken with my 300D are much better than my S75 and I´m sure they will be much much better than P9 as well.

Regarding being a "pro" for using 300D, it´s not mandatory, as it has several "basic modes", where it works full auto and you don´t need to worry about it. You only need to take the picture.

But to get the most of it, I really advise you to learn more about taking pictures.

And if you are not willing to spend time on learning more, you should give a try to other simpler and cheaper cameras, though very nice, like Canon G5, Minolta dImage A1 and others.

Anyway, I think it´s strange that your P9 delivers bad quality pictures. I have taken pictures with a SONY P32 (3MP) and I found the pictures very good. Are you sure your settings are correct (best quality, best MP)?

Hope this helps.

No you can not see the picture in the LCD before you take it. The LCD allows you to see it immediately after you take it. The camera has a through the lens optical viewfinder which will allow you to see the scene you are composing much better than with an LCD. Immediately after the shot you can look at it in the LCD and use the histogram to check exoposure.

The 300D/DR is alot different then a Point & Shoot camera.

You cannot use the LCD for previewing shots, as the 300D is a SLR camera, and has a mirror that blocks the sensor until the shutter is pressed.

For image quality, check out many of the posts in this forum, or look at the sample pics in the review here. You will NOT be dissapointed with the shots the DR takes. They are so good, that while many people talk of getting another camera soon (when a possible replacement is announced), I will be using this camera for many years to come. 8x10 print outs are outstanding. You cant tell the difference between this pics and a film photo.

SLRs are harder to use. There is the good "fully automatic" mode that most cameras have, but to take better/artistic photos, you need to use and understand things like fstops, depth of field, shutter speed, iso and other settings.

While it is harder...it also produces amazing photos. It's like anything really. Stick it in auto, and it will take good photos. Take control over the photo, and it will take amazing photos.

Things like changing lenses, adding filters and the such make a SLR so much more flexable then a P&S with a fixed lens. However, P&S lenses these days have large zooms, and good quality.

The sensor chip in the DR is alot bigger than P&S cameras, and this produces images that are cleaner (less noise).

P&S cameras do internal post-processing. Things like color balance, sharpening etc. SLRs need YOU to do the work in a program, like photoshop (photoshop elements comes with the DR), or paint shop pro. It's more work, but again you get better results.

So, if you are willing to spend the time and energy to learn how to use the camera, and how to post-proccess your images, then the DR is the way to go. If you feel you wont like that, stay with one of the many P&S cameras that exist today. 5-8MP P&S cameras range in the $500-$1200 price range, the DR is $1000. However, I've just added a couple of extra lenses, a couple filters, a battery grip....so my DR cost is around $1600 at the moment.

Hope that helps a little.

Answer to the first question is no...

The image quality is outstanding but you have to be prepaired to work and get used to the camera. I've taken over 1000 shot and I'm only starting to get use to it!

This is a great camera for the very keen hobbiest but not for the point and shoot type of person. If you expect the camera to take good P&S shots it won't!

Because of the nature of the beast you cannot use the LCD to compose pictures. With a little training in the basics of photography such as shutter speeds, F stops etc and a little knowledge of post processing with the excellent Adobe Photoshop Elements that comes with the camera. I would suggest getting the camera and two books. One on using PS Elements and one on basic photography. Amazon has a lot of good reviews on such books as do the wonderful people on this forum. I have the camera and it is a joy to me. Good luck. John
