Dave,
I have a CAnon 1d and all the great L lenses and wanted a small
backup with very good optical quality.I got the T1 and was sadly
disappointed.I wanted to really like it cause uts design is
wonderful and that screen is terrific but after 3 days the optics
just did not cut it for me so I returned it to Best Buy.

They wanted to charge me a 15% restocking fee but said if I bought
another canera they would waive it...I didn't want the 828 and then
I saw a returned V-1 for $350...I bought it last night and its
amazing.I cannot get over the clarity and sharpness and then the
vivid volors...they just jump out at you..how did Sony do
this?...Is the F717 as good or better??I will tell you this,I'm no
Pro but I'm enjoying thes epics from this little gem more than my
expensive Canon equipment...did I just get an exceptional copy???I
think Phil or Steve said they thought the colors were
flat!!!!Wow..perhaps they got a bad copy.

I just love the convenience of the trim feature and the burst mode
is great as well.

Just amazing to me I got this all for $350....I will need to buy a
back up battery though!!

Please look at this pic..not for composition cause I cut off the
petal but for color and sharpness...thanks Sony..I'm very happy.

Hi David,

I have a Canon D60 and bought a V1 as a compact add-on for that heavy chunk of technology and I'm as happy with it as you are.

Although the camera has all the bells and whistles a DSLR user could wish, I'm not entirely sure about the colours. They're not as natural as I would want but I haven't yet pinpointed the problem in Photoshop.

AF in low-light conditions is excellent, especially using the NightFraming feature. With my D60 I can't even dream of shooting in places with virtually no light.

And you really struck a bargain there... 350 bucks is less than half the street price of that camera here in Belgium...

Have fun with it!

Frank

Wonderful picture.

What problems did you have with the T1 optics? I have a Canon 10D
the 17-40L lens and 28-135IS. I bought a T1 and although I have
not yet checked all focal lengths and fstops I find that the lens
is very sharp from corner to corner. I have done a few comparison
shots with both my Canon lenses and (except for noise, which I
expected) the results are very close.

Compared to the V-1 my shots were flat. The T1 really responded poorly to any shots with bright reflections,,,I noticed a "fogging" effect around the highlight point.I will say this..I do miss the wonderfully bright screen on the t1 and if they address a couple of the issues with the next model I'll give it a try.It just couldn't produce the same quality shots as the V-1 or my Canon S400...but then,it wasn't suppose to.

David,

Great price for such a camera. Colorful picture too.

Thanks Dave. I find that if you put the in-camera contrast and saturation setting to plus the out of the camera pictures have lots of punch and are not flat. If you also put the sharpening to plus the results are often stunning, but in some cases over-sharpened. I like to use Photoshop anyway so I probably will settle on something less in-camera than the plus settings.

By infrared you mean nightshots in green mode? I haven't tried
out the green nightshots in the V1 at the showroom. What is
the application wherein you really need this feature. I wonder
how often I'd use it and how good it really is. The major
difference between the W1 and V1 is that the V1 has that
nightshot green mode that no other same size digicams have.

What a great deal! I just love mine, too. I go crazy with the macro
and infrared. I've also gotten a lot of great low-light concert
shots...I think if I find one that cheap I might get it for a
backup! :)

Nightshot on the V1 is great of course!! Nice for extreme situations! About movie, what's wrong with 640*480 16 fps?? allright the W1 is "supposed" to have 30 fps (I've not seen it confirmed, but I think so) but hey, that'll cramp your little 128 MB card in no-time!

Be aware of the optics of life!

I don't think the nightshot is all that useful, since in near total darkness it can only "see" about as far as your flash would. Although, it does make for some interesting special effect shots in normal light. In the V1 manual, however, it warns that you should not use the nightshot mode "outdoors in the daytime" because it "may cause your camera to malfunction". They don't elaborate on the nature of the possible "malfunction".

The nightframing is quite another matter. This feature is very useful in framing a shot in low light conditions where you would have trouble seeing the image on the LCD or even in the viewfinder. In nightframing, the IR is just used to frame the shot, and when you press the shutter release, the cam goes back to normal mode and the flash fires and you get a normal shot.

I have to add my accolades to the others here for the V1. It's my first digital cam, but I did a lot of reasearch before buying it and was convinced it was the best overall camera for it's size in the marketplace. Except for a disappointly short battery charge life, I haven't had reason to be disappointed. It's just a super little camera and, where I was used to a Canon AE1 with a zoom lens, this camera is so much more convenient and compact (fits well in any jacket pocket) in spite of having an even slightly greater zoom range than the AE1 I had. Now I just have to get a nice tripod to sharpen up the edges on these critical lower light and landscape shots.
