Well, I installed the new verision of Nikon View 6.2. Now, Capture crashes everytime I open it.

I even went to the Nikon website and have downloaded a trial verision of Capture 4.0. But it crashes on my computer also.

Any idea what the problem is?

I used both View and Capture 3.5 yesterday and all was fine.

did you uninstall the previous versions before you put on the new ones?

Well, I have a complicated answer. The first thing I did was install the new version of View without uninstalling the old version. View seemed to work ok but then Capture 3.5 would not.

So, I then uninstalled both View and Capture. I then installed View and Capture. For capture, I installed the new trial version of 4.0.

Capture appears to load. But, then when I open a file, it crashes.

Un-installing Nikon Capture + View
do use the included resgistry cleaner !!!
Afterwards install the software again.

Leon,

I do not understand what a registry cleaner is. However, I have installed Nikon Capture on my newest computer. It is a Dell P4 with 1 gig of ram. I am having the same problem. Capture appears to load, but as soon as I open a nef file it crashes.

I am stumped.

The new computer never had capture on it before. I am therefore guessing it is some sort of a problem that is unique to my Dell Computers, my software configurations, or the trial version of Capture. (However, I was having the same problem with Version 3.5. Hmmm. must be some sort of conflict with other software I am running.

I believe I have uncovered the problem via a discussion on the Nikon website.

There appears to be a bug in the Nikon View 6.2 software. Apparently the Nikon Capture will not work if the image has been rotated using the Nikon View software.

Boy howdy, am I ever lucky this time that I kept the nef images on my flash card.

Boy, that wasted several hours today.

Shad,

Many thanks for your help. I am always amazed at how helpful the users of this discussion board are.

In any event, this strikes me as a huge bug. I am surprised Nikon has not taken 6.2 off their website. I just attended a Nikon seminar on Sunday. They raved and raved about how Nikon View does not distort or otherwise change the basic file structure of a file when it is rotated. They certainly failed to mention that Capture will not work, however, if you rotate a file in View.

I bet I spent 4 hours this afternoon trying to fix the #$%^ thing. I would have never guessed that a Nikon software program would have such a major, major bust in it.

I tried downloading Nikon View this morning on a 56k modem...took 3.5 hours and then at 98% completion I got a message saying it could not continue with the download and shut itself off.

With the issues you all have described about bugs, I'm now glad it didn't download correctly!

none of this surprises me.

I have been in touch with Nikon Tech support back and forth for the past month. now my emails to them are returned (to [email protected]) Something must be wrong with their server now. How convenient. they have not been able to help me, and I practically give up at this point.

I installed NCapture 4. It fatally crashes on startup, every time, instantaneously. I have every program on the sun on my system, this is the ONLY one that will not work. Nikon tech can't even figure it out (well, the last time they bothered to respond). I have used their regsweeper many times, reinstalled many times, to no avail. NView seems to work fine, however, as did NCapture 3 when previously installed.

Capture crashes EVEN in Safe mode (explain that to me), yet works fine on a backup OS of XP that I have installed on another hard drive on my system. This OS has no other programs installed there, so I can only assume Capture must be incompatible with some other software. but which one? Capture One, Photoshop, ACDSee, who knows? I sent Nikon tech a complete list of what I have installed -weeks ago, and they have yet to respond.

I posted this same problem weeks ago on this Nikon forum, no one responded at all. its nice at least to see now I am NOT the only person with probs with Capture 4, and it is now obvious that its NOT just about NView 6.2 -because my fatal crash happens with Nikon View 6-1 running fine, and even without Nview installed at all.

Capture 4 has bugs and its frustrating because Camera Raw doesn't "seem" to be as good. but its not like I can test on my own for sure!

as with their supposed "flagship" DSLR's, their flagship software and tech support continues to disapoint me.

Argh.

Stupid me misinterpreted the release notes and for some reason thought that Nikon's rotation issue just applied to images rotated during the Nikon Transfer process (which I've never used.)

But nooooooo... If you rotate a NEF in NV, it breaks Capture. Tried uninstalling NV 6.2 and reinstalling 6.1.0 - guess what? Now as soon as NV tries to load the folder containing the rotated files, NV breaks.

Things like this really make me wonder what kind of nightmare the upcoming Capture update is going be.
