Does anyone know?

Why is it that the size of a JPEG file (large) in an 300d (100 iso) is around 3 Mb and a "similar" file in a 10 D is about 2 Mb? Setting are both large/fine.

greetings,

Rob

The size of the fine JPEG is highly dependant (as it should be) of the amount of small detail present in the picture. Add the higher in camera sharpening which makes compression harder to achieve and you get a larger average size on the 300D than 10D but not by the amount you describe...

It also depends on the ISO setting. A picture at ISO 1600 will be noisy, creating more "detail" and a larger jpeg. Smooth colors compress better, so an ISO 100 picture of the same subject will be considerably smaller.

There is an embeded jpeg in all of the 300d files you can find a utility here

http://www.lincomatic.com/e3krstrip/e3krstrip.html

that will strip this jpeg and reduce your file sizes.
The process is lossless and has worked well for me, good luck.

that is really good to know. I will try this utility for sure. does it recompress the photo or simply extract the other jpg without loss?

Yes they are, search for jpg removal tool here you'll see EkStrip i think. I've got about 280meg of photos in JPG and once removed 246meg...
The 300D embeds a medium-fine JPEG inside the large JPEG for
viewing on the LCD.
Are you sure? I thought the RAW file had the embedded medium/fine
jpeg...

I don't think anything other than RAW as an embedded jpeg.
