Merhaba Helen,

My family is in Yenimahalle. Hope to see you later then. I know Yukari Ayranci well, so it won't be a problem to reach to you ;)
Yes, it is too bad about Ankara being a bit unphotogenic. I lived
here for four years the last time we were posted to Turkey, and
never thought much about it. But then, I wasn't as obsessively into
photography then as I am now. And you're right -- the rest of
Anatolia is fabulous for pictures. I've pretty much traveled the
entire country by car (well, except Bodrum and Marmaris) and always
found something interesting or picturesque to photo. The (scanned)
pics aren't really that great, but my Turkey albums on Webshots
have had well over 60,000 hits, so good or bad, people must be
finding pics of Turkey to be interesting :-).

Where in Ankara is your family? We are in Yukari Ayranci, near the
Russian Embassy. It would be great to chat when you get back!

Congragulations Helen. They are all great shots!

It is really sad that there is not much to photograph in Ankara. I
know that very well because I lived in Ankara for about 20 years :)
My family is still there. But still there are millions of other
places that you can photograph in Turkey. Only 'Ic Anadolu' is dull
in terms of photography :))

Well, anyway, I am in US right now, but I would love to chat with
you once I come back to Ankara.

Best wishes,
Mustafa Demirhan

...I just bought a V1. I valued your approval of this small camera and thought I was going to be without my 707 during an upcoming vacation. This was an easier decision for now as to whether I even wanted a different camera. Probably not the wisest decision since I could have gotten a 717 for just a little more than the V1. I haven't used the V1 much, but I do like the sharpness of the pictures (thank you for your advice to others in this forum to not allow the camera to select the shutter speed). One real difficulty for me has been that I just can't see the settings on the lcd when I'm outdoors, but I'm sure that with practice, I'll love it.
Again, congrats on being published - & I look forward to seeing your 828 pics :)

Bev
What are you using now for your wonderful Challenge pics?

Thanks also for the links; I'm always happy to read interesting
things on that subject and will have a look when I have time. He'll
be here in June for a summit; that should be interesting!
Oh, I can imagine. As you may have read, his address to federal parliament here was "honored" (I trust the significance of my spelling concession isn't lost on you, since we're so rapidly heading for new status as the 51st state ;-) by the exclusion of the public from proceedings for the first time in Australia's history. There's a marvellous portrayal by Bill Leak (political cartoonist to 'The Australian') of our self-defined world relationship which I'll e-mail you tomorrow, in deference to copyright considerations.

Actually, harking back to Bush's whistle-stop visit to the troops in Iraq, you'll appreciate that I won't be able to get the notion of a "rubber Turkey" out of my mind now that you've mentioned that!
Too bad I
have Tim's career to keep in mind :-))).
Yes, I often think about that, and the anguish of having to decide just how PC you need to remain. No doubt it gets hard at times :-))

Here's a few of the more sober ones ...

... all of which came from here, along with some local stuff from Down Under and other links a-plenty:

Oh... one more, as a reminder that many (though not enough) of us here would agree totally with your "Land of the Vacation" description. This from recent STF arrival Terry Lane, who could be accurately described as "the thinking person's media host" in my neck of the woods ;-) --
