I must say I'm stunned with the sharpness (img)

I would assume this lens does extend. IF stands for internal focusing, so the barrel does not extend when focusing, but I’ll bet the lens gets longer when zooming. It’s cheaper to manufacture this way. It looks like a nice light lens for an old buzzard like me to take on long hikes. I have an old 70-210 lens that is push pull, and I’d like to have something smaller, and the 28-200 looks like it would be worth looking at.
Looks like this lens can be picked up for $310 from B&H. $290
imported.

Looks like a nice lens to carry around while hiking. Light, and
good range. What I wonder is does this lens extend (get longer)
when focusing or zooming?
The "IF" in the lens description means Internal Focusing thus no
barrel movement/extension when zooming.
This does seem like a great, compact lens at a good price with ED
glass. And it is pretty fast too.

At 28mm: 2.5"
At 200mm: 5"
Weight: 13oz
Use 62mm filter.

It's very good travel lens but don't expect it as sharp as 24-85 G. At least mine isn't.

I want to be able to take good portrait. I have been reading on the 50mm f/1.8 raving thread, I think I will get that. But I am still looking at a lense that will give me versitality especially in fashion show shooting. Was thinking about getting a 18-70mm and a 70mm-200mm, but I had doubt cuz the 18mm-70mm might not have enough zoom.

Now... it seems that its a better choice getting this 28mm-200mm. Then, I can later get a 17mm-35mm or 17mm-55mm wide angle for upgrade. What do you think?

I saw a review of this lens last night on the Nikonians site along with photos. It looks like it just about doubles in length when zoomed to 200, and it was a good review. I will stick with my 12 year old 70-210 f/4-5.6 for that length. I already have the 24-85 G AF-S, so I will probably stick with those two lenses for those long hikes I don’t want to pack a lot of weight, and sharpness isn’t that important. Having all that focal length in one lens is tempting tho.

Here is a link to the review of the 28-200 with photos.

whats up?
of the nikkor AF-S 28-200 IF G lens. Amazing close ups
capabilities, its the smallest lens I've ever seen , I had the
Tamron XR's and thought that was small. The nikkor is not only
smaller but its sharper, faster (much less hunting than its
competitors) and closer focus too 1.3' @ 200mm is really close.. I
really love this lens, my wife bought me another not knowing I had
one, so now I have two of them LOL. Here's a sample @ 200mm.
Comments welcomed.

28-200 would be a bit slow. 50 f1.8 is better choice.

I'll receive 70-200 vr next week. Here is an exmaple of fashion show shooting I took last month with 28-200mm.

If you shoot outside in bright sun, you can get acceptable results with almost any lens shooting sports. I used my old 70-210 f/4-5.6 at a major league night baseball game last summer with great results, and only had to go up to ISO 1250. I shot night high school football with the 80-400 VR at ISO 6400 and got fair results. I do shoot a lot of sports now, and now have all 2.8 and faster lenses for shooting sports. Most of the sports I shoot are poorly lit high school venues.

I'm really not sure if its good for sports but as Wingspar said on a nice day you can do almost anything as far as speed goes, I was on a speed boat whe I took this shot he was going prtty fast on his Gondola too did'nt sharpened after downsizing. I really love this lens no matter what PPL say.

Wow, this is one convincing shot. I definitely will order 28-200 as soon as I know the shipping date of my D70. I think it is a much better choice than the 18/70 lens that comes with the kit. I just wonder what would fast going gondola look like.
Thanks. Leon

Sorry, thought we were talking about the 24-85 G, I got confused with another post, this pic was taken with the 24-85G.

The sigma 70-200 HSM APO, nikkor 18-35, nikko AF-S 24-85 IFG lenses, I now need a macro and I'm leaning towards the tamron 90mm or the nikkor 180 macro, have to have a great macro. The sigma should be good for sports photography. If anyone has some input we can surely use some.
