Hi to all,
After deliberation i have decided to purchase the EOS-300D.

I live in the U.K. It seems logical to me to buy from America due to the cheaper prices. Has any fellow U.K people got any advice on buying this camera from overseas?.

I am very excited and cant wait for my puppy. :)

Not in the UK.

But would not warranty be an issue if you buy from US?

Someone i know of bought one from the USA and got a phone call from customs saying he could pick up his camera and pay £170 import duty. This all but wiped out any saving.

I would advise you print out the cheapest UK web price and take it along to Jessops and they will price match it.

They matched mine at £799 with kit lens from amazon but that was a few months back.

Mark.

There was a letter in Amateur Photographer asking about this - the reply was that after Duty, VAT, extra credit card charges, and possible loss of warranty it probably wasn't worth it. What happens if it has a fault?

Find a friend coming from USA, he buys one, take it to you. You'd better order a case, so that he can put it in :)

Amazon in the UK are the cheapest place I found.

I bought mine from Best Buy in the US but I was out there at the time and 'forgot' to declare it on my return. I go back and forth alot so if it did go wrong I'd just take it back with me next time.

If you arn't going over there I'd just get it from Amazon for £800

I'm in the UK and Jessops are doing it for 800 now. Just go ahead and get it from them, get discount from accessories & warrenty etc. Can easily take it back if you're not happy with ANYTHING in 30 days anyway. That's always nice.

I am basically in the same position. Very tempted with the current fall in $ to get a camera from the US imported.

VAT and stuff doesn't worry me too much because the savings are so high, but the lack of warranty is more worrying. I could probably save almost £200 getting from BH Photo (less if I get hit by customs).

Again the warranty is a worry, especially having read some err99 problems and the like, even if there is only a small chance I have a problem, i'd be gutted if it happened to me.

Tempted to just go to Jessops and get it for £800 and have some piece of mind.

Any UK people here bought from BH Photo?

Hi,

I did buy my camera in the US in November, whilst at a conference.
As far as I can tell it is exactly the same camera with a different badge.

I paid £656 with the kit lens. The dollar has dropped further since then.
Even if you declare it and pay the VAT the UK price is not justifiable.

I bought a UK power lead for the charger for £5 from Comets.

Canon UK will, I think in most cases, honour the warrantly.

My camera is with them at present being looked at. You need proof of purchase. I was totally up front with them and they honoured the warranty after looking at the US sales receipt.

Good luck
Tito.

I think you can do at least £100 better than Jessops from mail order in the UK, and get next day delivery.

Check the web, or the cheap (£2) Amature Photographer magazine, which is flooded with ads.

I bought mine mail order here in the UK.

there is NO duty payable on digital cameras entering the UK (4% for Digital video-cams) What you would pay is VAT based on the price paid plus postage costs and possibly a £8 processing charge levied by the post office for clearance (depends how it's sent).

I nearly purchased a Rebel via Hotbuyselectronics based in New York however due to time constraints had to purchase in UK. They sell both grey market Rebels and USA Rebels. Grey Market are identical but do not have full US warranty i.e. come with 'international warranty'. Given the info shown in previous postings it looks like Canon UK are honouring overseas purchases anyway if receipts are provided. From my calcs if you bought a rebel with lens KIT from Hotbuys it would cost 865 US including postage which equates to approx £460. Add VAT and clearance if you have to and it works out at approx £550. Jessops couldn't come close to that.

correction.

I mentioned 865 US in my previous post as the best US price for Rebel Kit - that should have read 965 - sorry. However that still comes to approx £615 after VAT and clearance charges are paid - and still a bargain.

because I had relevant information for you, but your address [email protected] doesn't seem to accept my e-mail (it does look rather strange).
Do you think you could write me an e-mail?
