My PMA Report - includes production D70 (long - imgs)

No worries, just hoping!

I'm trying to decide kit versus just body and finding a wide prime for the low end or perhaps the 18-35...

Thanks for the report again. It was helpful and interesting.

In the lighting provided by the booth (dark) I did not do what I should have by setting a higher ISO.

The images I took with both the 18-70mm and the 24-120mm lens were both taken at ISO200 and as a result out of focus. This is all I was referring to.

It was my error and in such I can't report on how crisp the images from that lens is and I can't provide a comparrison against a known lens. My mistake should be no reflection on the quality of the 18-70mm.

Again, sorry! totall my fault here.
  • joeX
I did get to shoot with the 18-70mm on both the D70 and my D100 but
to be honest the quality wasn't good enough to post.
Are you really saying that the 18-70 -- a 400$ AF-S ED Nikkor -- is
SO bad that one can't even produce a picture good enough to post on
this forum? IMHO, some of the earlier 18-70 samples clearly
indicates otherwise.

I feel that I must be missing something here..... Please explain.

Anyway, thanks a lot for finding some answers for me.

Probere necesse est.....

At the kit price of $299, I don't know that you can go wrong unless you intend to purchase the 12-24 or 24-120.

My thoughts were that it is not as solid in your hand as the other DX lenses. I can't imagine Nikon would produce a camera of the D70's quality and then ship it with a sub-standard lens... just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Nikon wisely used marketing people in their booth who (I believe) have no idea what's coming down the river. No one there had even held a Coolwalker until the show and even then could only quote answers from the spec sheet they were handing out at the show.

Sorry.
Thanks for the review..!
anything to add abt F6 digital/film rumors ?

Would have done the same? Holding THE new camera, with crowds all around, no pressure, really :-).

Thanks again for the report,

These were underexposed and as such have some noise in them. Nevertheless, you get the general gist that these are unbelievably beautiful women.

The photographer shooting them could NOT take a bad picture. Olympus is very smart!

Since D70 is to be my first DSLR ( at least until I have a change
of heart), I don't have much to ask about equipment. I just don't
know. But by any chance, do you have more pixs of that Olymbus
model ? IF so, please post and I'll be eternally grateful .

Than I was told wrong. The guy at the booth said you're locked in to only lenses made for the Rebel.

My appologies and thank you for correcting me.
  • joeX
If I had to recommend one over the other right now, today, I'd
recommend the D70. This is not a Rebel competitor, it is a D100
competitor. It competes with the Rebel in price only. Also, if you
didn't know, the Rebel lenses are proprietary to the Rebel whereas
the D70 can use any Nikon lens the other DSLR's use.
While the Canon EF-S lenses will only work on the Rebel, the Rebel
body itself, like the D70 can use the entire range of current Canon
EF lenses.

There are 2 images you can download in ZIP format. They were taken with in-camera settings in the Nikon booth with minimal lighting and as such need the levels adjusted to look proper.

I have made no adjustments to either image.

Summary:
  • D70's being show are production models!
The D70s shown in the booth are production models and as such they
let me shoot as many images as I wanted with the CF card I brought
with me.
Hello and thanks for the report :-)
Any chance that you can put some original full size D70 Jpeg files
on your homepage for download? I would be very interested in them.

Matthias

Excellent report. Thanks for sharing. As others have noted, Olympus seems to have the best features going for it. It also seems that Nikon reps were far friendlier than Canon reps in letting you try the camera out. That leads me to believe that they are confident the camera is ready for general consumption. Perhaps March is real then.

They do look pretty noisy (But I do not care about noise that much) and not that sharp. Are they both ISO 200? Have you more you can provide for downloading?

thank you
I have made no adjustments to either image.

Joe,
Thanks for the report. What did you think of the 24-120VR lense?

Can you also comment on the 18 mm viewfinder as asked below; I would be interested in that very much.
Thanks

Thanks for the report.

One area of concern for me (because I wear glasses) with the D70 is
the 18mm eyepoint as compared to 24mm on the D100. How did you
find the viewfinder on the D70 to be as far as eyepoint and
brightness?

D70 NEF files (if you can open them)
I've converted two files (ISO 200 and 1600) to JPEG with my own RAW
converter (which uses the official Nikon Browse Library).

You'll find both files at http://www.photothumb.com/d70/

Hope you don't mind.

(For those interested, I hope to release a beta version of the RAW
converter within a month or so. For more info, feel free to contact
me at [email protected]).
