hello.

does anyone know a dslr body available for about 1500 (new or used) which can be equipped with a split screen focusing screen?

thanks.

The only ones i know of that have changable screens are the 1D, 1Ds from canon, i think the D1X and D2H (and maybe the D1H) from Nikon and you may want to check the old D1.

The 10D, 300D, D100, D70, S1, S2, 14N IMHO all have fixed screens.

But you can look at the reviews here to make sure.

Your best bet might be a used D1 from Nikon if it had an interchangable screen.

The Olympus E-1 has interchangeable focusing screens, but neither of the two currently being offered has the split-image type of rangefinder.

Instead, the E-1's standard focusing screen is ground so the whole surface functions as a microprism. This enables the photographer to see very clearly when the main subject snaps into and out of focus, which inspires confidence in the autofocusing accuracy. The microprism focusing screen is a tremendous aid to manual focusing, particularly when combined with the electronic focus-by-wire mechanism built into the lenses.

I've been meaning to develop a screen refit procedure for the Nikon D100. I haven't worked out a price yet.

I could probably do the same thing to a Nikon D70 when it comes out.

I doubt I'd charge more than $250 for this, so with a $1000 MSRP, a split screen D70 shouldn't come to more than $1250. A D100 goes for $1400 these days, so think in the $1650 neighborhood.

I use Intenscreen screens for refits, they have 6 models, but only two are appropriate for D100 or D70, the horizontal split screen or diagonal split screen.

And, if you'd prefer a Canon 10D, I've been dying to tear one apart.
