He probably already made all the tests and is waiting until the anouncement.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

PHIL, give us some clues, so we can peacefully await PMA!!!!

Forget about the first one since Phil abides by the embargo. Preview is a great read (pics of DSLR, specs and pics taken from DSLR). Lastly, Phil's reviews are superb but my mind should have been made up to get one by the end of this week. Meaning if I like the specs, I'm ready to place an order.

Cheers,

José

I'm watching very closely myself....I got the email from Minolta today as many others did. I've been a Minolta fan since I got my first film SLR many years back....so I'm curious to see what they're gonna unveil.

Official Konica-Minolta DSLR Announcement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey hey, just received an email from Konica-Minolta regarding their impending release of a DSLR at PMA in Las Vegas (the 14th)

Here it is:

Dear Minolta User,

Thank you for your interest in a Minolta Dynax Digital SLR. You have
previously contacted us in regards to this product class. As we did not
have a product to inform you of at that time we have registered your
details, in preparation to contact you when we did.

Now that time has arrived.

In a few days the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) annual show will open.
The location this year will be Las Vegas. This is an important event within
the photographic industry and is often used to launch new products.. In
recent years Minolta has used it to unveil numerous models including the
DiMAGE 7.

This will be the first international show where the new Konica Minolta
brand will be present. This is an ideal opportunity to show the vision and
direction of the new company.

The embargo of these new products will be lifted on 11th February 21:00
CEST. As Las Vegas is eight hours behind the UK this translates as 12th
February 05:00 here.

With the speed of the Internet official information will begin to appear
almost immediately. Please look to these websites to have details published
first.

Des, maybe it is nothing but why would this person choose the Dimage 7 as point of reference. I heard too that in the past, Minolta starts its product line with the 7 (mid-range) so I just hope the trend continues with the Digital 7.

Cheers,

José

The french magazine Chasseur d'Images says that the firsts prototypes of a Minolta DSLR will only be available at Photokina (sept/oct 2004).

Here is the excerpt:

Quand on leur force la main, les japonnais répondent que leur reflex numérique est "en préparation" et laissent entendre que c'est un produit Photokina" (septembre/octobre 2004).

Ce que nous avons écrit il y a déjà deux numéros de cela reste donc vrai: Minolta profitera de la PMA pour annoncer ses projets en matière de reflex numérique, mais il faudra attendre la Photokina pour découvrir les premiers prototypes fonctionnels du Dynax-Numérique.

I agree. I'm a D30 owner, but I'll switch to Minolta if the specs are right. If not, I'll order me a 180/3.5 Macro and either a 100-300/4 or 120-300/2.8 (Sigma) this weekend.

Well, not necessarily! I think it will depend on the interest and effective number of users! Just look at Pentax: they didn't got a DSLR forum yet!

This question was raised in the Pentax Talk Forum prior to the *ist-D and apparently adding another forum would cost Phil money. So unless the amount of traffic here would substantially increase, it will remain the way it is.

I can still continue shooting and scanning with my Maxxum SLRs and Elite 5400. My expectations however will be heightened at that time. Since it will be almost 2005, I expect no less than 8MP and definitely with AS.

How about you? Will you wait or will you upgrade to the 1D MK II, S3Pro or D70?

Cheers,

José

I would not likely switch from Canon to anything other than Minolta. Now that the new Fuji S3 is known, I don't see enough there to get me to switch. The D70 is a great camera, and if I didn't already have gear, I'd be sorely tempted to go that way, but I don't see enough to make me want to do that. I will be very interested in the specs for this new Minolta DSLR, and if it has AS, I will very seriously consider changing. One of the big reasons I'm considering the change is Sigma EX glass. It is very, very good, and in fact appears to be the equal of Canon L glass except it lacks IS. If I can get IS on the sensor, there's no reason to stick with Canon. Just comparing the Maxxum 7 vs EOS 3, the 7 seems to have better thought out ergonomics and ease of use. The Canons might be more popular, but the Minoltas look more "fun" to use.

Rambling a lot just to tell you that I don't know if I'll switch until after I've seen the specs.

While we wait, what lens would you recommend for a standard range zoom?

Hope others will chime in about their standard lenses. I have the 24-85/3.5-4.5. I think it is sharp for a standard zoom lens. Some people complained about the 'banana-like' effect on the wide angle but I really don't see this even when printing letter sizes.

The bokeh is so-so. Maybe because I have the 85/1.4 and not really a fair comparison. I wanted to upgrade to the Maxxum 28-70/2.8, I heard that it is super sharp like a prime lens but the AF-tracking performance is awfully slow. Also, even the used lenses are pricey.

I contemplated on the Tamron 28-70/2.8 because it gets rave reviews from the reports I've seen from magazines and user comments from the Canon and Nikon SLR lens talk forums.

Lastly, I heard that it is not a good idea to compare Maxxum lenses especially against the Canon L lenses. I heard that the latter are not only sharp and quiet but the AF speed is pretty fast.

Regards,

José

Sometimes a photograph captures reality.
Sometimes a photograph captures the imagination.
Ultimately, a photograph simply captures a moment in time.
And then, . . . it lives forever.

Jose,

What about the istD ? I've taken a serious look at this camera, and it seems quite good, although like all the others, it has a few flaws that may or may not be important depending upon ones priorities. Anyway, it stands up quite well to the 10D.

Not quite. I'm going to make a brief comparison of a few lenses, assuming no IS/VR. Or, on the other hand - with AS in body (so there's no advantage of IS and VR, only optics):

70-200/2.8: Minolta (70-200/2.8 G (D) SSM) second, after Carl Zeiss. Nikon a very close third, Canon a far fifth, behind Sigma.

wide zoom in terms of image quality (regardless of speed): Minolta (17-35/3.5 G) second only to Carl Zeiss, third is Nikon, another far fourth is Canon with their 16-35/2.8.

portrait lens: Carl Zeiss 85/1.4 first (figures), Minolta and Nikon tied for second place - Nikon has slightly better vignetting performance, Minolta is sharper and delivers a nicer bokeh. Canon does not quite compare

fast standard zoom (28-70/2.8 or the likes): boringly, Carl Zeiss first, Minolta tied for second place with Nikon, and Canon tied with Sigma for fourth place.

There are other G (and even non G) lenses that make Nikon and Canon look pale: 35/1.4 G, 24-105/3.5-4.5 D, 28-105/3.5-4.5, 24-85/3.5-4.5 xi (superior to the current 24-85) and the standard kit 28-100/3.5-5.6 D - better than Canon or Nikon offerings.

There's nothing to be ashamed of with Minolta. I remember one phrase: "Minolta makes the best bodies, Nikon makes the best lenses and Canon makes the best mixture." I would throw away the Canon best mixture part and replace it with Minolta...

José

Hi Blake,

I love the *istD, great handling especially with the vertical grip and it feels very responsive too. I also like the Oly E1 especially its rugged body.

There are a lot of superb DSLRs out there and for me it is a matter of which one offers me the widest selection of lens options. I prefer standard zoom and telephoto zoom lenses with IS so I am partial to the S3Pro, D70 and 10D. That is of course if Minolta does not introduce a DSLR.

How about you? Are you planning to get the Minolta DSLR right away or wait a few months?

Cheers,

José
