Just saw the simpletex announcement of the 8G cards. They tout a 10mb/sec transfer rate - but doesn't the Mark II do a max of 5Mb/sec?

Seems like overkill? Especially for the Mark II which does 8M at 8FPS that seems to be the place where transfer speeds to the card would be important

Who is this card then geared to? Can anyone take advantage of 10Mb/sec?

Perhaps to speed the transfer of photos from the card to the computer through the card reader. 10MBps is about 80Mbps which is a fraction of the 400Mbps that firewire is capable of and the 480Mbps that the USB 2.0 Hi-speed spec is capable of.

(note the distiction between a capital 'B' and a lower case 'b'. A 'B' indicates bytes and a 'b' indicates bits. 8 bits per byte)

You don't think there will be cameras that can actually write faster than the 1D MKII ?

max..the real question is who is going to pay $6000 per card?
 
The camera can do 5MB/sec. But, they didn't tell us how fast the card has to be in order to achieve that spec. If the top speed on your car was 60 mph, you would have a lot of problems trying to average that speed. The analogy isn't perfect, but it gives you some idea.

MK II will be the speed leader for a while.

Also theoretical specs are always optimistic to say the least. Anyone here achieved 480Mb/s on there USB 2 devices? If they are saying 10Mb/s I'm guessing 3-5Mb/s real world. Heck even if they are right surely you not complaining, as you do have to get the photos off the card and onto the PC and the faster the card the better.

Take a look at the CF database on Rob Galbraith's site. Even though the best performance on the 10D so far is about 1.4MB/sec, it still benefits from the very fastest CF cards like the Sandisk Extreme which is supposedly rated at 9MB/sec.
