Certainly sounds like they will have an announcement. Let's hope it's everything we're expecting, and not some misbegotten product.

I got it too. If it's typical Minolta, it's going to be a day late and dollar short. While in the past I think they did a good job with their film cameras, their 7i I think was less than impressive. Now, as some rumored they only released that series to get experience in highed end digital. I don't know. Would I love to have a Maxxum 7 or Maxxum 9 with a full frame or 1.3x sensor in it? Hell yes. Would I be willing to pay $5000 for a Minolta vs going out and buying a new Mk II and all new lenses? Nope. Canon would win that battle.

I hope you yourselve are not a good writer JasL, because otherwise I have to think this letter is fake, which I hope it is not.

It is difficult to believe K-M gives web addresses at all (only from UK and US) in an official answer.

Nope.

Minolta UK ran a "grass roots" survey a while back on that web site; someone on the Yahoo Minolta group passed the news along and lots of us got online to participate in the DSLR survey. It appears that all of us who participated in the survey got this note this afternoon.

Not that it's news - but it's icing on the cake to know that we're not going to be utterly disappointed on the 12th :)

Their A1 is a pretty good product and compares well in features/price against other products in that category. I'm sure they can come up with something decent on their first kick at the can. Look at Pentax. Their DSLR is pretty good (not necessarily best in class but it's not a dog, either).

It is difficult to believe K-M gives web addresses at all (only

BTW, providing those web addresses is very promising ... it implies that these very popular (and influential) sites have been given details in advance under confidential disclosure agreement, and have a fixed time & date when they can release details ... as has been the case with many, many other products announced ... that's why you'll see simultaneous releases of information on several of these review sites. They all have the info and are just waiting for the "green light".

I'm a relatively new K-M digital user, though a long time user of their glass. It seems to me that several years ago Minolta had a DSLR product that was very very expensive. And, I recall, not well received. Am I halucinating or are these old synapses still connected?

KM - bring it on! Let's see how Minolta finally beats Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony and other ones simultaneously...
My, I got carried away.

However, since KM decided to rebrand cameras, it also seems they will do the same to film, right? I wonder how it will look on the shelves... Then again, it's just the hype setting in...

Hell yes. Would I be willing to pay $5000 for a Minolta vs going

win that battle.
It does not have to be comparable to the Mk II to succeed for Minolta. I too would love an 8 MP version of the Maxxum 9 with the AF features of the Maxxum 7 (and the depth of field feature), preferably full frame but 1.3x crop factor OK. But I don't expect this is what we will see. Rather, I expect it will be a competitor in the range of the 10D, D100, S2/S3, and *istD. This will give Minolta a stronger chance of retaining its existing customer base and perhaps even expanding with new consumers. A higher spec camera along the lines of the MK II could not effectively compete because there just are not enough potential Minolta customers in that segment. What I am fearful of is that it will be an entry level camera to compete with the Rebel D and new D70. If that's the case, it may not be enough to keep as many Minolta Maxxum/Dynax shooters in the fold. It probably would not be enough for me.

But, we will all soon see and can then make our own determinations based on "facts" rather than speculation.
