Looks like all 8 announcements are made. 1D MkII and 7 P&S cameras.

Looks like Canon has covered most of the lucrative bases.

They have a Panasonic Lumix competitor 3Mp and 35-380mm Panny has a 2MP and a 4MP so Canon cut them down the middle.

They have a Sony 828 competitor 8Mp 28-200mm L series designated lens to battle the Zeiss lens on the Sony. Same $999 price tag too.

And of course the 1D MkII to battle the D2H.

I'd say they are doing a really good job to answering people's wants.

Unfortunately I find myself in a lurch. I want to buy a camera around April, but I want better AF than the 10D has.

I'm starting to wonder if I should look at a used 1D. Do you think there is any chance I will be able to find one for close to $2000. Right now I can't see buying a 10D when it will probably be replaced a few months after I buy. The Nikon D70 looks like a decent stop gap that I could use for a year or two and keep because of it's P&S AUTO program modes that my wife and kids could use it . I can go cheap on the lenses and not worry about my kids grabbing the good stuff later. Or I could get a 300D which doesn't seem to be nearly as nice a camera, but I could buy nice accessories for a future camera with it.

The scary part is that two or three years from now I'm sure that most of the middle of the road cameras will be great compared to what it at the top end right now.

...for excluding the 1D-II.

Price?

Oherwise it seems the obvious top-choice. ;-)

Waterskier,

Have you actually USED a 10D for any period of time? I recieved one of the very first 10Ds and have taken thousands of shots with it across a huge range of activities.

The only time that I have issues with the AF on the camera is in low light settings, such as a dimly lit party or night club. Attaching the flash takes care of that problem.

The camera, in most settings, has NO problems focusing and focuses very quickly. For example, yesterday I photographed an SCCA autocross event with my 10D. Out of all of the shots, only a couple were out of focus. I am, however, using the 24-70L as my primary lens.

Would the 1D or 1DII focus faster? I am certain of it. Is the 10D some huge, unusable hunk of junk with a worthless AF system? Absolutely NOT.

In short, I would suggest that you borrow the 10D, along with a good lens and try it. Only then will you know for certain whether it will fit your needs. (I would suggest that you stay away from the cheaper Canon lenses if you are concerned about AF speed and image quality.)

As a bonus, your investment in L lenses will work with all the camera body upgrades you make in the future :)

Good luck,

Mark

I totally concur with Mark. I have also taken thousands of photos with my 10D, and aside from the low light issues (at times) a poorly focused shot from time to time can always be traced back to an error that I made - not the camera. Regardless of your intenced use, if you are just getting into this arena at this time, I would recommend you go with the inexpensive body now, build your lens system around that to fit your photography requirements, and then, move up to a current state of the art body at a later date, when you have refined your interests and needs - or not. With the "Prosumer" cameras, you will have to abandon the entire package if you are moving up to current technology at a later date.

I have had one for a year.
My wife and kids (age 8) also use it.
The AF issue is WAAYYY overblown.

In really low light, it may be an issue - but so what if that isn't what you are shooting anyway. (p.s. not sure that I can focus a lens in light that low).

Try it and see if it fits your needs.
Good luck

My plan is to go for the D70 for now (assuming good reviews) and move on to a 10D II or another upgrade in a year or two, which I'l lbe able to do without guilty because (1) I'll give the D70 to the wife and kids, and (2) I will not have heavily invested in Nikon lenses. Not much different from one of your contigencies.

As you pointed out Canon counter attacked the opposition on all fronts.

Opposition of 10d is very weak. S2 is more expensive and does not have better features and has same quality (not for me). The new Nikon d70 is not there yet and who knows exactly when. It is a good camera but still it is not up to the same quality of the 10d (i'm sorry D100 it is not as well) and it is made of plastic. Yes plastic, and that counts. I have a 10D with 10.000 shots on it and still looks like when it came out of the box. A plastic camera after few outing it is not tha same anymore.

Then the 10d has better sister than the d70, therefore is a better starting point.

Until the 10d will not have any strong opposition, there will not be upgrades. Maybe in 3 months things will change, but not yet.

Andrea.

I was hoping for a 10D successor at PMA, with a little more resolution and maybe a 1.3 sensor. As an alternative, if I didn't already have a 10D and several Canon lenses I would seriously consider the new Fuji S3.

This has the new dual photo-site sensor (SuperCCD SR), which if implemented properly (apparently unlike the F700) could give up to 4x dynamic range, and this is a very big deal, as unlike more resolution, more dynamic range is badly needed in digital cameras. This camera has a 12 MP output from its 6 MP pixel sensor which due to the unique sensor cell layout and interpolation routines, most tests equate to around a true 8 or 9MP.

Coupled with the new range of Nikon fit digital optimised lens from Sigma, this could be a great, relatively low cost setup.

Camera? That's a handheld computer with a lens on the front - right?

To give you another one.
I do not get in details of my personal experiences with S2.

To make it short, If you interpolate an 10d file in C1 pro, wich takes a snap of a second longer during the raw convertion, you get the equivalent of the s2 wannabe 12 mp file, but with less artifacts.
just forget the 12mp from fuji.

the s3 will be an outstanding camera, and it should sell for less than 2000$, at least with the spec they published.
The problem with it is: buy one now, if you can.

The camera is under development, and they showed us 3d renderings image of it, so far. There is a mock up broshure avalaible, but it is missing a lot of details, which might tell us, that the camera is still far away from the shops. It might be avalaible.... maybe in september?

Once it will be there, it will be a great option for many. But I believe at the same time there will be an upgrade of the actual 10D.

That's sort of what I was thinking.

In a couple years I will buy whatever I want and it will be much better than anything available today.

The D70 still looks pretty hugly and old fashion designed, Mybe was still designed by Giugiaro, for him everithing should look as an F3. Plus the sensor is not as good as the Rebel one. Image quality count as well.

I agree with Mark, and I am one of those with a 10D that has focus issues. I have shot over 50K images and I am very happy, and guess I will be buying a second as a backup (I was hoding off inhopes of a replacement.)

Interestingly, mine performs better in very low light that in bright sun light (focus wise).

In any case, the fucus issue is way over blown. Very few have had problems that Canon couldn't fix - and while it is a pain to send off a new camera to Canon (or exchange it where you buy it) the fact is, once calibrated the camera is excellent.

To err is human, to really screw things up requires a computer.

Unless the street price of the Mk. II is under $4K, that is.

I will keep one no matter what, just for the 1/800th flash sync. (That's the strobe duration of mine ...)
I'll bet used ones will be pushing $3000 soon!

As you pointed out Canon counter attacked the opposition on all

Opposition of 10d is very weak. S2 is more expensive and does not

plastic, and that counts. I have a 10D with 10.000 shots on it and
still looks like when it came out of the box. A plastic camera
after few outing it is not tha same anymore.
Then the 10d has better sister than the d70, therefore is a better
starting point.
Until the 10d will not have any strong opposition, there will not
be upgrades. Maybe in 3 months things will change, but not yet.

Andrea.
Wow, I'll have to remember that my EOS 3 looks like cr*p now I've taken it out of the box and shot with it. Damn that evil Canon for foisting cheap plasticky rubbish on me. Lucky you pointed this out as my camera could fall apart at any moment. Must remember plastic is weak, metal is strong.

If you w@nk your camera, even if made of plastic, it can last forever.
LOL.
Take it easy.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see people spending $3000 on a used camera ESPECIALLY when they were going for $2700 new before they were gone.

Sorry this is a FAST depreciating technology.

By the end of the year, they will be lucky to bring $1800.
