Nice Gary. Was the engineer blowing his whistle at you? Looks like you were feet from the tracks edge. How fast was it travelling? The only old coal trains that I have seen moving, not in a museum, were trains that people pay to take a 20 minute ride. Never seems to go to fast.

I love those old trains. Is this train still in service or was it just a special for the Super Bowl?

Hi Ken: We were located a couple hundred feet from a grade crossing so got the benefit of a good whistle. He was probably running 40mph when he passed us. I good a very good video recording of the action. The locomotive is going to be on display at Kansas City Union Station today, I may drive into town and get some stills. Here's a link to more information on the 3985 http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/excurs/up3985.shtml

Must of been exciting. Top speed of 70 miles an hour, that must be a site to see.

Looks like you were standing between the 2 tracks. At one point the train must of passed you awefully close!

I was at the Franklin institute last year. They have a train room and there is are a few locomotives on display in a small room. I spent a long time in that room. I have a few shots in my fisheye gallery, but they are only closeups of the wheels.

Ken: My entire working life, 38 years, was with the railroad, CB&Q-BN, so this is a subject very close to my heart. Although I was an exempt (non-union) employee, I did become a qualified locomotive engineer and made many runs during work stoppages. If I had my life to live over again, would have changed nothing, I truly love railroading. Best regards, Gary

Yeh, it doesn't even show up on the site where I posted it. They must have had problems last night as this is the first time that ever happened. Thanks, Gary
