Hi everyone!

At present, I have a KDS 17" three yr old(not flat screen) monitor. Besides a little screen glare and it not being able to view a few shades below black, it has served me well enough. Unfotunately, until it has warmed up, it has been showing a dark moving shadowy line on the bottom of the screen, so I believe it might be giving up the ghost. I was wondering, without breaking my pocket book what monitors do you use that you feel are pretty good for photography? Many thanks in advance,
Sandy

If space is not an issue, go for another 19" CRT monitor from either NEC, Eizo, Philips. If you computer supports dual display, add a second one.

hi Sandy,

I used to have Sony monitors but last year I got dual Phillips 107P (not a smart move)...try to read the reviews...stay with serious brands...buy the monitor from a local store (in case you don't like it you can exchange it anytime)...and one of the most imp. things, you have to calibrate your monitor...

P.S.: I don't like LCDs..not yet

I've got a NEC Multisync FE700+, and I'm very pleased with it. It's got a flat screen and has not noticeably degraded over 1.5 years. I might purchase a 19 inch if I was buying today.

Hi Alexandru,

Thank you very much for your opinion. After reading the link you shared, I understand why you don't care too much for the LCD monitors and I've decided that a CRT monitor might best suit my needs best. Thanks again,
Sandy

Hi Howard1,

Thank you for the info. I haven't begun looking yet, so am not sure what brand names we have here in Canada, but check to see if the NEC Multisync is available or not. Thanks again,
Sandy

I bought it at Futureshop. I see they are now selling something that looks like it's a successor to the FE700+ for only $200 Cdn. Prices have really fallen. I would spend a bit more and get a 19'.

You have already gotten a lot of good advice, but permit me to throw in my .02--if you're still researching, you might want to check out PC World magazine's reviews. Their web site is http://www.pcworld.com . You might also check http://www.cnet.com , as they have an extensive reviews section.

I do echo the others' advice: if you can swing a 19" CRT monitor, I highly recommend it. My particular 19" has served me well for several years, but it's an off-brand from a defunct company called Quantex. I would advise, as has been said, that you stay with a major brand and buy from a local dealer (shipping on a large monitor is rather pricey, not to mention the hassle of returning a dead one). Good hunting!

Just did a little bit of research, since I am also looking for a new monitor.
For NEC MultiSync FP912SB:
"Best Buy" - PCWorld.com
"7.0 Good" - CNET (pretty good for a CNET rating...alot of 6's and such)

"THE GOOD - Good color performance; brightness presets optimize viewing for digital images and video; image settings are adjustable via mouse and keyboard; Mac and PC compatible.
THE BAD - Relatively expensive; substandard focus.

THE BOTTOM LINE - NEC's MultiSync FP912SB offers decent image quality and vibrant colors, but it's quite expensive for a 19-inch CRT." - Buisness Week Online
"4.5 stars" - designtechnica.com

I could post more, but that one was long....

Looks like it retails for about $300, but I bet its a little cheaper now...I'm not sure how old the model is. I am going to go to Best Buy, Circut City, and whatever else is local to see what I find. It won't be this weekend, but maybe monday or tuesday next week. I know this is one of the monitors I will be keeping an eye out for though.

Hi to All

It's a case of how much do you want to spend? My favourites are the Samsung NF monitors. I use a 22" one, and if you can stretch the budget that far, it is well worth the money. Full screen viewing at 2048 x 1536 is the closest to a slide show you will get in digital. I have also sold Samsung 959NF and MB monitors (19") that are very good value for money.

Personally I would not venture below 19" monitors unless cash was tight. Flat panel (LCD) monitors are IMO both poor for image quality and over priced.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thank you muchly for your opinion! After reading all replies here and a little research, I had decided an LCD flat panel monitor was not good enough for what I expected. I ended up narrowing my selection down to the Samsung, NEC and Philips CRT flat screen monitors. I finally ended up purchasing a 19" Philips "Brilliance 109P4. This monitor doesn't lack some of the darker shades my old monitor lacked. This Monitor also comes with its own sRGB color space, which makes life a little easier for me. lol! You use a 22" monitor,....wow!,....and I thought the 19" looked large! lol! Thanks again,
Sandy
