Dear Forum,

Recently bought a Canon G5 and I would appreciate recommendations for accessories.

I have looked around at cases and I plan on buying the Canon soft case for the model. I would prefer the Canon leather case but unfortunately this does not retail here in the UK. Any thoughts?

Immediately after taking the strap out of the box, it seemed to be a little below par and I was wondering whether there are any options I could explore.

Does Canon sell other straps, perhaps as replacement for other models which have better straps. I would prefer a much wider strap as the one supplied seems a too thin.

Any other general accessories that people have found particularly useful in conjunction with their G5, I would be glad to hear them.

Thanks for your time.

Hello

Congrats on your new G5! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Yes, the strap that comes wiyh it is foney. You might look into a strap by OpTech. The classic with pro loop connectors is nice. Here is a link to B&H Photo page where they sell them. They are in the U.S. but I think they will sell overseas.
Good luck
Clayton

As Nickos said - an extra battery could come in handy - I got mine with a charger for £39.99 (canon charges 50 odd quid for just a battery) from http://www.warehouseexpress.co.uk/ - its a Hahnel BP511 replacement battery, and comes as part of the Digital Powerstation DCL package ( go to warehouse express, click digital, and click battery packs -> hahnel on the side.) Had no problems with this so far, the battery good (higher rated mah than the canon too) , and the charger charges both the hahnel, and my original canon battery in about 70 mins each (not together mind you, one at a time!)

Also if you havent already, you might want to look for a higher capacity CF card than the puny 32MB that canon give you - I got a PQI F1 40X 512MB for £90 all in from ebuyer.co.uk - cheapest and IMHO best value I could find.

Later on you may want to consider an external flash, such as the speedlite 420ex (this is what I will look into once I get some cash!!)

Goes almost without saying that you will want a decent printer (if you havent got one already - sorry to state the obvious) I have a 18 month old canon s900 which has really come into its own since I got the G5 - if I were buying now I'd either get an i865/i965 or wait for the i990 to appear....

If you get the lensmate,(and or flash) then you'll probably want a tripod at some point, unfortunately, I can't recommend one as I dont have one (yet - thats another on my "to purchase" list)

Finally, if you get a big CF card, it may be an idea to get a usb 2.0 card reader - transfers would be far faster than "in camera" (again, gonna go this route myself.... eventually)

Yes I am a Canon junkie.... lol - got my brother's old AE-1 SLR upstairs in my room.....

hope this helps

regards - enjoy the G5 - I am !
