damp day in nyc (sony 828 images)

Maybe I feel I'm still at work. Sorry Andy for this but I'm in this
buisnees since I was 8 or 9. I mean the visual art buisnees.
never be sorry for that! you have a vast amount of experience, and you should share it with the forum ;)
Sorry for my poor english.
stf is a world-wide communty - believe me, i appreciate your typing in my language, and never apologize for your english skills - we understand you perfectly ;)
1.
great pic. I think that everything that's in left side is "nothing"
Out of balance no substance. The architectural element caled
"altar" you can get rid of it. Keep maybe half of tower and all the
right part of the picture and you have a profesional picture. I can
tell Andy that what I like the most and I think is the mistery and
the focal poin of the picture is that little window looking at us
through the branches. GREAT !!!
Cuting (croping)the picture like I sugest I think it will enphasise
the "wnd. drama"
thanks i'll have another look at this photograph and consider your opinion
2.
I don't know . Go see Italy , Florence, Rome, Vicenza etc.
There is a fine line betwen the Gothic and kich. Picture is
great,but subject is......?
well, let's see - this is one of the finest examples of cathedral that we have here in the united states. we have somewhat fewer cathedrals here in the united states than there are in europe ;) .... so, i am only using the materials i was handed, so to speak. i feel rather fortunate that we new yorkers have such a wonderful place to go worship, to visit, to appreciate the art and architecture.. from the tiny sculptures, to the massive vaulted ceilings, to the tapestries, oil paintings, carved wooden mouldings and oh so much more at this cathedral. did you know that it was almost totally destroyed by fire not long ago? they are just in the early stages of restoration, work that will take years and years. but then, it took many years to build this edifice, too. all good things take time, don't they?
3.
Great picture overall . Nice exposure , focus etc.
But ..again ...to cllear to sharp , like a perfect 1$ post card
that you can buy at the cathedral entry.
Where is the mistery the light , maybe the clear obscure 15th
century technique?
please look at my other post and you may find some mystery and light ;)

today, with this photo, i was actually going for this specific shot, to round out a collection of photographs i have of the cathedral. i hadn't been able to photograph this side chapel the last time i was there, as there was an event going on.
Donn't became a slave of the computer. In this pict. the details
inside the church should be minimal and the focal point shoul be
the "vitralium" with the "divine" light passing through it.
well, in fact, there was little post done on this particular photo. i think that the artist that made the stained glass window and the craftsman that fashioned the bronze gate did more than i'll ever be able to accomplish ;)

maybe you like this other photograph of the same room? i think i agree with you, i like the exposure in this second one a bit more that the first one i posted

4.
I really like it. Grat shot nice composition.
all my photographs of harry are fantastic. it's the subject matter ;)
5.Great pict Andy but again... the colours are to violent. I'll bet
that in N.Y. IN FEBRUARY you cand find those those colours.
sorry, but this is straight from the camera. the 828 in real mode. in fact, have you ever noticed that on rainy days, the colors around you look very rich and deep? that photo is a true representation of the scene on broadway and 99th street which is where we were. hey - new york in february is a very colorful place :)
Those
are like summer colors and light. I'm telling you again you are
playng with the computer to much. S speed priority -great,
composition and subject great again . Colors not that great.
Thanks for sharing.
I'm sorry if I'm to critical.
valentin, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and i want to thank you for taking the time to comment on my photographs.

regards,

looking great as usual andy :)

One question though... When ever it rains here the sky gets grey and overcast and basically takes the color and shadow out of everything. Well as you can imagine this doesn't lent to great photos. Well at least not for me. :) Is it the same in NY?, and if so how do you get this amazing look in such dreary weather?

I'm quite curious and hoping you have some secret to share because it seems that ever since I got my new cam the weather has been conspiring against me. So now every day I see they grey overcast sky I get bummed since I know I won't be able to get any good shots....

s
then, as the day grew worse, i remembered that we're looking for
movement, so we shot some passersby and their umbrellas.

hi sean

i love shooting in the foul weather. to be sure, some of my shots in such weather have little or no color... and thus may lend themselves to a b&w treatment...such as this

other times, when i'm able, i will look for color even in that dreary situation, like this... this is china town, and was taken about an hour after that brooklyn bridge umbrella shot

this was a horribly wet, grey and gross day. here's another, the same day... harry shooting my potd on times square. i purposely set this shot up with the traffic behind him, so i could get some added interest from the many yellow cabs that stream thru times square

i find that the colors are accentuated, appear richer and fuller and more vibrant under rainy skies..

thanks so much for stopping by, and for the kind words. i hope this info helps you?

all the best,

andy

maybe I'll just have to shoot and see what comes out. I'm basing alot of it on how it looks to my eye. No color, no shadow so no shots. Part of that is because that is what I like to shoot, alot of shadow and contrasts. Plus I spend the majority of the daylight hours either commuting to work or at work and there are slim pickings around here as far as inpirational or colorful photos go. I'm trying to get better about shooting things I normally wouldn't... like people. So maybe I'll give it a try and see what comes out. Now if only they couldn't tell I was taking there pictures that might make it easier.

I do think that part of it is NY though. I think any picture there would come out vibrant and full of life. That city has so much energy that it just ooozes from everywhere :) (can you tell I miss it) ;)

isn't there a little purple in the side chapel photo

and

shouldn't you and Harry be more cautious about your "beef fix"es

because

A) Word might get out to Virgil's
B) The cow skull above Harry may have been "Mad Cow" affected. LOL

Thanks for always inspiring us whenever and wherever you press the
shutter.

regards,

David

Always looking forward your next adventure, both of you.

Heheh... I have one question. No, I have TWO questions.

First of all, why is Harry so dry?

Secondly, why do all of your pics of Harry have him somehow
intimately involved with food? Hahahahahah!!

Thanks for reading my reply.
I really like the second pict. wiwth the stain glass. More than the first one.

Maybe with the colors in a rainy day you are right. I tried some shots few days ago , on a damp day, but the pict came out realy lousy. Real color mode also. Maybe is something rwong with my camera.
Anyway what triger the comment was maybe the yellow taxi cab color..to bright.
Here is my pic.

No post procesing just croping.

Thanks again and I'm glad that you did not get upset because of my comments.
VAL

heheh i would never get upset. i like to hear what folks have to say, if they want to say it...

thanks again

Way cool, Andy and Harry.

I'm glad you posted some pictures of Harlem. It is a beautiful
place, but burdened by the negative publicity it received (and
rightly so) 5 to 10 years ago. Since then, it's been going through
a major change. The architecture of the buildings up there is
simply gorgeous.

One of the worst things that could happen to Harlem is
gentrification. The very soul and character of the place is in its
people, and to lose them would be to lose its appeal. It's even
more meaningful there now, with Black History Month in full swing.

Once I can get out there, I plan on doing an entire series of
photographs of Harlem. Probably spring, when I'm not so frozen.

I love that 1st photo very nice the angle is just great
i had the pleasure of shooting with my good friend harry today
again in nyc. the day got off to our usual start with me getting
stopped by the police for shooting with a tripod in grand central
terminal ;) no problem, we went to the station master and i got a
"permission" slip. i felt like i was in high school ;)

we first went to the cloisters, nyc's very own monastery (i've
called it "th castle" since i was a kid). the weather was really
gloomy so i played with ir.

then it was off the the cathedral of st john the divine . for
those of you that are going to visit ny, this is a must see
place. just spectacular. i have shot there before, and posted
some other shots ( ). here are a couple more from today:

some of the detail that adorns the main entryway

looking inside one of the side chapels

then of course it started to rain. harry thought it was a hard
rain, i thought it was just a little mist. no matter, we had
plastic bags over our cameras... but.. we were starting to think
about lunch, so we headed to a nearby place in spanish harlem
called.. "carne" for our beef fix:

then, as the day grew worse, i remembered that we're looking for
movement, so we shot some passersby and their umbrellas.
