Yes,

I just had a look at the huge box, opened it and closed it. I almost send it back instantly to B&H. It is in front of me, in a samsonite type of box, almost as long as my dining table. I am curious but not enough to overcome my craziness to order this thing. No it is not the price. I don't mind to go hungry for 3 months to pay for it. But the size and the weight of it stunt me. The biggest lens I had was Nikon 300/2.8. But this Canon lens is out of this world. It should be called: incredilble weighty white monster. It is 500/4 IS.

Now hiow I am going through Airpoirt, without getting in troulble with Home land security. Some one mentioned insurance....
I think I am going to freak out>

I used to think my Bigma is big until I bought the 300/2.8IS, which is tiny compared to 500/4IS, whihc is a baby compared to 600/4, which is ....

Gee...why not add a telescopic lens to a DSLR?? Hmmm... why don't Canon et al think of that?? Solves the weight issue and probable clearer lenses, don't you think?? Even a little wee telescopic of mid level quality can beat 600 plus mm whatever... :-)

Congrats Congrats! I got mine around two weeks ago and I think I sat there laughing at the case for 5 minutes before taking the lens out. I agree - I couldn't imagine the airport screeners questioning me as I walked into the terminal with that plastic crate in my hand... Oh yeah, I also Just loved the call from my wife: "What's this huge box from Canon? I don't think it's even going to fit through the door. What camera equipment could you have bought that would be in that box".. Yeah yeah yeah. Just wait till she sees the Amex bill.. LOL.

Enjoy it.

And don't forget to brace yourself for the cost of a Winberely Head w/ Gitzo tripod..

Mmmm.... I'm tempted by a 400/2.8 myself.

Actually, I've been going around the Canon and Sigma big guns for 6 months. I wanted one.... but the size and weight and cost... which to get? I'm err'ing towards a 400/2.8 or 300-800/5.6 at the moment, having been within a click of getting the puny 300/2.8! :) .. B&H declined the money because they couldn't verify my identity here in the UK... silly people, they would have my money by now otherwise!

I'm beginning to feel though that any of the big guns, even the 300/2.8, are too big to use on a walkabout and require a tripod/monopod... in which case, they are all tripod lenses so weight isn't an issue... or is it?

I wonder if a Canon 400/2.8 upsampled 200% would be the same as a Sigma 300-800 @ 800? (since it's soooo sharp)??? Any comments from the audience?

Excal
If you think that is big don't look at hte 400mm f/2.8 or the 600mm
f/4.

I honestly can’t say how the 400 compares to the 300-800 as I have never see the Sigma lens nor any 100% crops from it. All of the big guns are nice and heavy but they can be manageable hand held with some practice.

Greg

Great lens, and with some practice, and tech skills, you will be able to hand hold this thing!! My friend loves to hand hold his 500 f4 with a 1.4X tc, and gets awsome results.

Good luck, and please post some photos as soon as you can.
Paul.

I think you would be better just getting a 2x extender. That will give you a real 5.6 800mm.
