Photoshop use of memory

Is there a way to get rid of all the memory that PS 7 uses after I close the photograph without having to close PS? If I use layers, the computer slows down and shows that I am using 750mb of memory, even after the file is closed.

You can try Purge in Edit Menu. Since your file is closed why not restart PS, you will have your memory back and more.
