Road Trip, Beautiful Australia (5700 photos)

Great pictures, I really enjoy viewing them - so much so that I started a thread in the Samples and Galleries group entitled favorite travel shots. If you post your favorite over there even more people will get to enjoy it. Hmmm, which one will it be?--

Hi gang, I haven’t been around for a while, I’ve been away on a
road trip. Onie and I travelled down to the southeastern coast of
Victoria, Australia, along the famous Great Ocean Road.
Welcome back, mate! (That's how you say it, down under, ain't it? :-)

These are some very good images and what wonderful memories you must have made yourself there. The pano and the first large view of the Apostoles with the falling light are just superb. Very well done!... and thanks for sharing them.

Hi gang, I haven’t been around for a while, I’ve been away on a

Beautiful pictures! Very natural, crisp and sharp looking! Good
compositions, I'm a fan :D

Can I ask you what your "sharpening" settings are and what post
processing you do ?
Frank, I've found that every photo needs different processing, the
very minimum is sharpening.

I normally start out with levels adjustment and sometimes also curves.
Sharpening is usually done by Unsharp mask with settings around
My suggested settings for a Photoshop unsharp mask would be,,

Amount 100% to 250%
Radius 0.3 to 0.6 pixels
Threshold 0 levels

Here is a link to PS sharpening that's been helpfull to me.

Another way is to use the sharpening brush for selective
sharpening, but use low settings and go over the are several times
if necessary.
Sorry for the trouble! :)

Thank you so much for these awesome pictures. They are all perfect, but I believe my favorite is the road shot - the greenery is just fantastic.

Hi Colin,
wonderful shots; thanks for sharing.

I was "downunder" just once, in Melbourne and Sidney, and even it was a short trip I have enjoied Sidney so much that I still consider it one of the most beutiful places I have ever seen.

I must be back for a longer vacation, sooner or later, and next time I have to add the 'Ocean Road' to my trip.

I will inform you, so I can borrow your pano head next time... :-))

Ciao

Giovanni

These are awesome. I traveled to Australia last year but only had a three day business agenda which didn't provide any time to see the country side. You make me jealous.

They are all great, but the surfing shots are my favourites. I tried to do this in Hawaii a few years back, and the problem, as I am sure you know, is waiting, waiting, waiting, then you have the shot ready to go, and the subject takes a spill.

Thanks for sharing.

I am new to the forum and I have become your admirer instantly. Colors and composition of your pictures are just superb. Since you have used CP5700 I would like to ask your opinion about this camera.I liked its features and did some research before, but after seeing pictures taken by you -I fell in love with it. There are so many different opinions about every product there is; however, I will rely on your statement because you have mastered CP5700, so you know its possibilities.

I need a camera for:
1. Taking family photos,travel etc.
2. Taking some close-ups at concerts, recitals (my wife is a musician)
3. Taking some room's pictures ( I am a realtor)

I am waiting for reviews to come on 8700. Do you think is 8700 better than 5700? I like that it has scene modes, AF assistant, and larger LCD. I am worrying about 8MP and noise because of the small CCD. I don't need 8MP, 5 to me is plenty, as long as the camera takes good pictures.

To me it is all theoretical because I don't have a digi-cam yet. I guess I have been reading too much forum blah, blah, lately../
Your advise is going to be highly appreciated.

Hi gang, I haven’t been around for a while,
I know. You've been missed.

That's a wonderful holiday gallery, Colin. If Peter iNova sees it,
he may change his mind about the perfect vacation camera.

You've convinced me to buy a teleconverter. I just needed a tiny
nudge :-).

Thanks Uncle Frank, I just don’t seem to have the time to get in here as much as I’d like, it’s my busy time at work right now, but hey that’s life.

We had a wonderful time on our little trip the only trouble now is that I have so may photos to process.

The teleconverter is a great lens, I really didn’t know if I should have got the wide angle or this, looks like I need both.

,,, here’s you nudge,,, go get that lens Uncle.

This is one of my first shots with the TC-E15 ED lens, late winter afternoon, poor natural light, a shy subject, slow shutter speed, 400 ISO. I know there’s a lot of noise especially in the background, but under the conditions I’m reasonably happy with it..

Great photos Colin - we had a similar road trip Dec 03, can
certainly agree that the great ocean road is a must see in Australia
You got down onto the beach. The weather was just too wild for us to get down there,,, you lucky duck.

We intend to go back there again and again, it's not that far from us really, only a days drive away.

What I want to get are some night photo time exposures of the Apostles, I can see the images in my minds eye.

My god those are some really increadable shots! Ever since I was a
kid I have allways wanted to go to Australia and this did it for
me! I was shocked at how well that Tele Converter lens worked in
that surfer shot at first it looked as though you had a housing and
were in the water! I noticed that you said you had left your
panaroma lens at home would that be the wide angle lens(WC-E80)?
No, I don't have a wide angle lens, the pano head is an attachment that I mount to on my tripod that ensures that the camera pivots around its nodal point so as to make accurate stitching of several photos together to make panoramas. There are a few pano heads on the market and they are expensive, so I made mine myself. Since I made this one I have thought of a different design that's lighter and more compact,,, more on that when it's made. (thanks to POSSUM for the inspiration,, LOL)
Here is a photo of the current pano head.

And 1 more question are you happy with your Tele
Converter(TC-E15ED)? I am waiting for the reviews on the 8700 to
see if its worth it if not I will get the 5700 but it looks as
though all of the accessories for the 5700 should work with the
8700 :) Those pictures were great thanks for sharing!

Michael J
I'm 100% happy with the lens, I haven't tried any others, I'm sold on this one.
From what I've read most of the 5700 accessories will fit the 8700.

Thanks Muriel,,,
Glad you liked, it's nice,,, when what we try to capture has this result. :-)

When you think how much time we spend behind the lens and are not happy,,, the good ones make it twice as much fun and pleasure.

Thank you Craig,,,

The pano was a hit and miss with fingers crossed after leaving the bracket at home,,, so that was an adventure on it's own,,, but so glad I had a shot at it.

Hi sapro,,,

Thank you,,, makes it all worth while. :-) Forgot all about the S curve in the challenge,,, would really love to participate but as yet, I can not open the thumbnails which makes it difficult to assess the submitted entries.
