I've been using a HP Deskjet 660c to print up pictures I take with my 505v but the quality isn't as good as I know they can be. I'm in the market for a new printer and was hoping I might get some input from you nice folk.

I get great results with a Canon BJC-8200. I have a print from it (taken with my S70) hanging up at work, today a Lady was looking at it and was suprized to hear it was taken with a digital camera and printed on an inkjet. Nobody thinks the prints are from a printer (or a digital camera) until I tell them.

I too get great results from my Canon 8200. I have also have suprised many people at work. I even took an 8x10 to best buy(where I bought It) and showed the salesman, he too was amazed. I have had it about 2 months made many 8x10's printed some 80 or 90 Christmas letters and still have not ran out of ink. I did purchase an ink kit from theinkplace.com for $49 but have not tried it yet. good luck with your decision...snapshot

From what I have read (I too am in the market for a photo quality printer) and the reviews I have looked at, the Epson Stylus 870 printer is the best for the money. I am typically an HP printer guy (own an HP laser and deskjet) but the reviews all point to the Epson for picture quality. It is relatively inexpensive too (compared to the HP)...I have found it for as low as $215 searching thru MySimon. I havent bought one yet (missed there $100 rebate at xmas time) so am wainting to see what is coming out from the CES show.

But if you need one now...that seems to be the way to go.

good luck

I highly recommend any Epson photo printer. I own a DSC-70 and printed up pictures with the Epson 875-DCS AND an HP 932C. The HP comes with better resolution specs on paper, but when you compare the actual pictures- the Epson is better. It produces more faithful fleshtones, it is more faithful to the image on your screen, and the pictures look like real pictures on the photo paper. The pictures are even more magnificent when using the Premium Photo Paper. The HP produces great "printouts", but not great pictures.

Don -

I am also investigating a new printer, but I need it to double not only for photos but for regular business use (text, graphs, etc.).

I've had Epson printers in the past and was always faced with clogged heads. Would you say that the newer models have improved greatly on head problems?

And in your opinion, which HP printers come closest to the Epson 870 series in photo reproduction?

BTW, while you're at it, difference between the 875 and the 870? A wider carriage?

My Epson 870 makes superb prints from my S70. The 1270 is the wide carraige model. The 875DC is the same as the 870 but with a built in card reader. I think there is a 875DCS model that accepts Memory Sticks. But you cannot print directly from the card reader, you still nead a computer. These printers are on sale now, with new 2880 dpi models comming out. I have had very few clogged nozzle problems, and then easy to clean with a head cleaning cycle......Paul Pavlik

Hi there, Paul.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to continue to do some investigation at the Printing forum right here, as well as on the newsgroups and individual company sites. But as long as I have your attention here... :)

I've had Epsons in the past, and I had several models with clogged nozzle problems. So needless to say, I was driven off of the Epson brand. Not snarling mad with them, just not anxious to try them again. But there is no doubt about their quality in this model -- when it works. It's good to see you vouch for them on this issue. I had no other problems with them other than one other detail.

The noise of the Epsons I had in the past. Would you say that these 870 and 875 models are quiet machines? Mine would be stationed in a room where I might have a coworker at work, needing a quiet environment to get things done. Past Epsons were like trucks, even shaking the desk and making things fall at times. What about now?

I should say that there were a number of features that first drew me to look at the HP 990: I like the quietness, the speed, the duplex tray, great text and graphics printing. However, I'm unsure about its photographic capabilities as I just haven't seen it in action or seen any samples from it.

Ideally, I'd love to be able to see a printed photo sample from the Epson 870 and the HP 990. Preferably taken with a F505V. Going to have to find someone with one or each of these printers....

I tell you, sometimes it seems that quality is so close in these devices these days that a user could really be happy with any of them. However, I know that one or the other could make me downright giddy. :)

Ulysses,

I have the Epson photo870 and a F505V. Initially I bought the HP930 because of the positive messages in the printers-forum. Although the HP made nice prints, they were no match at all for the Epson. On the Epson printouts there is no grainyness at all. And no individual pixels to be seen even in the lighter colors. It is a very quiet printer compared to the older epsons. The driver-settings need some fine-tuning to get the best results.

Just my experiences,

marcel kreeft.

What about the HP 990 itself? Cannot those drivers be tuned also? That printer is so quiet that you can't even hear it printing.

I know that there are a lot of positive things to say about the 870. I've read all the press releases and Epson info and .PDF documents. What I'd like to know about it are the negatives. I want to know if I can live with those, just like I've learned to deal with the negatives of the F505V or any other equipment I've bought.

When the Epsons work, they work great, but what about problem scenarios?

I just bought an Epson 1270 last night, and to my horror, discovered that it is much better than the output of my F505! It would take a lot to beat this printer.
