>>> Challenge 7 Voting Thread <<<

I'd like to thank the participants of Challenge 7, "Portraits", for
a compelling set of images. Strong participation, a lot of new
names, great work by all. Voting starts now and closes in two days
(23:59 GMT ~ 6:59PM EST on Thursday). I will post the results an
hour thereafter. Click here to see the Close of Voting time for
your locale...

http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=29&month=1&year=2004&hour=23&min=59&sec=0&p1=0

Before voting, I beg your indulgence and seek your input. With
this iteration, I use the voting thread to get community input on
two points having to do with the timeframes for Challenges. The
questions should be self-explanatory. The Challenge 7 voting rules
appear in the section thereafter...

REFERENDUM

In some respects, the last two Challenges have seemed to drag on a
bit. At the same time, both have seen a surge of entries in the
closing days. A balance to strike, so, your thoughts....

(a) How long should a Challenge run? [Pick just one , your
"sweet-spot"]...
1. Cross two (2) weekends
2. Run two (2) full weeks
3. Cross three (3) weekends
4. Even longer

(b) Is it OK if the Voting Thread overlaps (starts or ends during)
the weekend?
1. Nope
2. Yep

Subsequent hosts will still determine the schedules. I'll just
tally your feedback and make it known to those that follow.

How long should a Challenge run?

1. Cross two (2) weekends

(b) Is it OK if the Voting Thread overlaps (starts or ends during) the weekend?

1. Nope. Weekends are for shooting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eligible Votes:

Drew - Andrew Huth - 5pts
Sara Sitting - Grant Hamilton - 3pts
Homeless - Vikas - 2pts

Exhibition Votes:

Professor Hirschberg Paul Teixeira- 5pts
Goggles Girl - Lonnit - 5pts

I only list those I am voting for. My list of Honorable Mentions would be too long and, thus, not terribly informative...

4... Jeanne by JLN

I don't think "Wow!" in response to too many images, but I think I said it out loud when I saw this. The tones, the ideal level of sharpness, the perfect DOF all make it technically superb. But it was the sideways glance that sealed it for me. Based on comments, I know that the emotions that pour from the image (distrust, fear, isolation) are, in reality, not accurate. Don't care. Fascinating, mesmerizing, and well-executed image.

3... Peek by Angela Johnson

The flowing hair, the doe-eyed/averted gaze, the utter self-consciousness and vulnerability... Wow (there, I said it again). Well conceived and executed. I was glad when Angela ducked into the Challenge thread early; she did not disappoint.

2... Her Again by iso3200

The pose, the eyes, the B&W/tones, the overall simplicity... Somehow generates a very complete sense of sincerity. Though a little different from most iso images I've seen, it does show his talent for putting the right stuff (and nothing more) in the frame. Nice.

1... The Eyes Have It by Paper Tiger

The vantage point, the high contrast, and the insubordinate look give this some punch and attitude. Excellent image, strong Challenge collection. Welcome to the first-timer.

I meant that the Eligible can only have entries submitted with a canon camera.

the open is for all cameras ,so that would mean people who are winning other galleries,such as MFC over at the Sony forum for example,can and do post pics in the Open ,which would lead to the open becoming more difficult to win because of the greater strength of photographers in that gallery.

Also there are those who do not want to host a challenge so they will always submit entries only to the Open gallery,their shots of course if submitted to the Eligible could win that gallery,but that factor is removed by the photographer themselves.
Perhaps you mean the Exhibition gallery is harder to win because
any picture in the Eligible gallery could also be in the Exhibition
gallery. I'd counter that just because it could doesn't mean it is.

Or maybe I just missed the point.
Challenge Length:
I think this challenge was too long.

Voting Period:
When the challenge is done, for two days. weekends or not doesn't
bother me.

After putting these together, it came to my attention that I had
picked three Alekas pics. shrugs Wasn't really expecting to
keep picking out ones by the same person :)

Eligible Gallery
~~~~~~~~
1 Siblings by Vikas
2 The plum faced kid, by Steve Winnard
2 A little of what you fancy does you good by Peter Woods
2 Round the corner, by Rob McGlade
3 First sign of life, by Alekas
Hon Mention
~~~~~~~~
A Moment Alone by Andrew Huth
Is that me, by Alekas
Are you sure, by Alekas
Me, by Dale

The What the hell category
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Orange Crush, by paper tiger.
Exhibition
~~~~~~
No votes for exhibition. votes for eligible, exhibition should
just be for exhibition, in my mind :)

Cheers,
Karl P

here are my votes for eligible :

4 Peek by Angela

3 P.I.P by Lonnit

2 Homeless by Vikas

1 Blue by Trujillo

and many others ... but really too many pictures to go thru with the right level of attention ... may be one per person would be enough ?

There was a metric ton of quality images in the Exhibition gallery. Two that I did not vote for, but at least wanted to call out...
  • Katya by Julio
  • Zoya by Ray
Stated more as a father than a photog: They steal my freakin' heart, plaster huge smile on-face, every time I see them. Shots to cherish. Thanks for sharing them.

I would think with anonymous entries the results would be slightly different.
nic,
I agree with your idea of having anonymous entries. Do you know of
any challenges that have a format for anonymous entries? I'd like
the names attached after the voting. It would be very interesting
to vote on the images without knowing who created them. Just like
the teachers who graded the papers without knowing who wrote the
piece until after the evaluation was complete. I think there is
something to be said for this format.

Referendum:

(a) -- 1. Two weekends is important for those of us that are stuck at a desk 5 days a week.

(b) -- 2. With only 48 hours, there’s not really enough time to give a reasonable review to all of the photos.

I saw many exceptional portraits, but tried to vote keeping the challenge in mind: "The essential message is not where they are or what they are doing, but who they are."

4 pts Pops by Pops (although I think you ought to donate one of those points to Ann :-))

3 pts A Little of what you fancy does you good by Peter Woods. What a spunky lady!

3 pts Like Father Like Son by Rahul.

Hope I added right this time.

Sorry, not enough time for HM’s or exhibition.

Thanks Joe for running the challenge!
