VOTE HERE to WAKE UP Canon - Part II

Great, yet another personal attack... When will you stop?
If you'd addressed the points I made, but you're not able to as you have no valid counter-argument. You've managed to side-step every worthwhile point I made.
Gee, you are hard to please, aren't you? You said I misrepresented
you with my usage of the word "we" so I've made a disclaimer. No I
won't call you a liar but you did say 'probably.' Why the change?
Again with the sloppy interpretation and use of langauge, this is going to get you into court as a doctor if you're not very much more careful.

Your question and my answer were:
And let me ask you if there is a firmware upgrade, will you
choose not to install that firmware upgrade?
Probably. For me, it isn't broken, so I see no reason to fix it -
in fact it could even make things worse
You said, would I chose not to install the firmware - and I said probably - meaning that I probably wouldn't. Please read and type with more care if you're going to make character asssinations on the strength of it.

I haven't changed anything. I used the word 'probably' as I think it's unlikely that I'd avail myself of a firmware upgrade (as you propose it) and I gave the reasons why. I'd be concerned that it might make things worse and what is an improvement for one person, might not be for another. As we're purely speculating about the nature of any future firmware upgrade and one isn't even that likely, I'm hardly going to say never/definitely not. If it addresses the LCD brightness issue, I'd certainly consider it seriously, but at this moment in time, I don't feel any need to change anything. If we were talking about availing ourselves of a specific firmware upgrade on the table offered by Canon, I'd consider it on its relative merits, but we're not. I can hardly give a definite answer to something that doesn't even exist.
From now, a firmware upgrade refers to FEC control, selectable
focus / metering mode, E-TTL II (if hardware permits), 2nd curtain
sync, mirror lock up...
Those features are of no interest to me, so if that were the firmware upgrade on offer, I'd say no and wouldn't upgrade.
ps. curious, are you going to sue all the politicians who use the
word "we" to voice their policies on TV from now on?
Politicians are elected representatives and as such can legitimately use the word as they do officially represent more than themselves. You might not agree with what they're saying, but it is within their remit. You have ideas above your station if you think you're qualified to use it in the same manner.

Okay now the D70 is out, I think it IS time for Canon to finally
wake up
from its 3-months of business dream-run and start to put consumer
first rather than trying to short-change us.

I urge all the 300D / DR users to vote 'Yes' on the proposal to
un-cripple the 300D / DR with a free firmware upgrade. Namely, give
us

1. FEC control
2. Selectable metering mode - including spot metering if possible
3. Selectable focus mode
4. E-TTL II (with distance exposure)

Also, we demand an explanation of the future of EF-S lens (since
1Ds Mk II is not EF-S compatible), is there going to be a lens
similar to Nikon 17-70mm in the near future?

Just hit reply and say "Yes" on the subject heading.

I wonder if you have ever produced a camera. Or for that matter, anything of any expense anyone would buy. Have you?

Where are you planning on drilling the body for the button you are going to install? Or, are you going to add another mode to an existing button?
2. Selectable metering mode - including spot metering if possible
Same as above. Plus, are you going to install the extra light sensor in the bottom of the mirror box, too. And, can you tell me in what instances you have used spot metering in the past. And since you are giving out ideas, how about mulit-spot metering?
3. Selectable focus mode
Another button thingy, but more importantly, how do you instruct Aunt Edna on when to select AI Servo vs. AI focus, in the 200 page users guide you are also writing.
4. E-TTL II (with distance exposure)
Gee, and the 1Dm2 isn't even the on the street yet!
Also, we demand an explanation of the future of EF-S lens (since

Would you like the telephone number of the CEO's daughter while you are at it?

But that would be too simple. We wouldn't want to make anything, especially cameras, too simple now, would we?

Look, if you wanted the "extra" features then why did you not pay the extra for the 10D???? Surely you can see why the digi reb has these cut backs!!!! So it doesn't detract from10D!!!!

Chris

How about this instead:
  • Bring out an improved 10D (Mark II?) using sensor technology from the new 1D2 at $1,000 body only.
  • Reduce 300D to $500 body only, $600 with 18-55 EF-s.
  • Put out a firmware update for the 300D to enhance its functionality somewhat.
  • Release a 14-60 EF-s IS for $400 street or less. I'm much more interested in wide than telephoto which is why my 35mm carry-around lens is the 24-85 and why I don't own the 28-135 IS. Even the 24 isn't wide enough sometimes but it's close. The 22mm equivalent from a 14mm lens on a 1.6x camera would be great for me. The new Nikon is, to me, only slightly better than the kit lens (17-70 versus 18-55) - not enough to be interesting.
If Canon want's me to get out of my film camera and into a DSLR, they're going to have to cough up a lens that can compare to, and hopefully improve upon my trusty 24-85. The lens that comes with the low-end film SLR kits is the 28-80 or 28-90 - very much like the kit lens for the DRebel (29-88 equivalent). The next upgrade for the film cameras is the 24-85 for $300, the 28-105 for $250 or the 28-135 IS for $400. Why not do something similar in EF-s if they are planning on keeping the APS sensor size and the EF-s mount?

I really think any appeal to Canon's better nature over this is likely to fall on deaf ears.

After all, why should they provide extra features when they can sell every camera they can make with the current feature set? We all knew, or should have known, the feature set when we purchased the camera. If anyone wasn't happy, they should have bought another camera.

As for the 'if they don't do this then I'll buy a Nikon next time' argument, well that's your perogative, as a consumer you choose how to spend your money.

However, Canon have sold perhaps 300,000 300D's so far, and I don't think an appeal (and a threat to defect to Nikon) even from a few hundred people will make a difference. Whilst all companies prefer to retain customers, a few hundred people defecting doesn't even form a blip on sales compared with the total number sold.

Just my 0.02c

I remember reading on DPReview that Canon is bringing out 20 new models this year. Do you think the replacement for the DR is one of those? If not, they need to do some serious revemping on the DR.

I'm not saying it's a bad camera, quite the contrary. I just wish I had realized how much I relied on FEC, continuous autofocus, and the metering modes that the G5 let me use. I would've ponied up the extra $400 for the 10D.

Has anyone heard anything about the new models?

Photography has surprisingly little to do with cameras, but almost EVERYTHING to do with the person behind that camera.

I'm not sure there's enough buttons for everything, but I suggest
Right for metering
Left for focus mode
FEC on the menus.

And I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for this. $50 was mentioned elsewhere. That sounds reasonable to me.
