Okay now the D70 is out, I think it IS time for Canon to finally wake up from its 3-months of business dream-run and start to put consumer first rather than trying to short-change us.

I urge all the 300D / DR users to vote 'Yes' on the proposal to un-cripple the 300D / DR with a free firmware upgrade. Namely, give us

1. FEC control
2. Selectable metering mode - including spot metering if possible
3. Selectable focus mode
4. E-TTL II (with distance exposure)

Also, we demand an explanation of the future of EF-S lens (since 1Ds Mk II is not EF-S compatible), is there going to be a lens similar to Nikon 17-70mm in the near future?

Just hit reply and say "Yes" on the subkect heading.

Come on, guys! Let's send a wake-up call to Canon because it seems like Nikon is brewing coffee already!

Well, if we get beaten, so are you...

And if we win, I hope you will remember us when you install that free firmware upgrade...

By the time the D70 is available in stores the Rebel will have been out for 6 - 9months. Canon won't release a firmware upgrade, they will release a new version of the rebel. They will probably announce it about the time the D70 hits the shelves with delivery a month or two later.

I wouldn't mind an update :-) Not to distract from the voteing, but what is "Selectable focus mode" would that be like using the sports focusing mode for all the other modes?

And does Canon even read these forums? And are they likely to even do anything about this?

anyway, chalk me up for a "yes"

You can't possibly think this post will have any effect on Canon. They don't owe you anything. The built the first sub 1k dSLR, gave everyone a chance to read reviews and the entire manual online before buying, and yet you can say they short changed people? How about the 10D users, were they short changed because the 300D had the same sensor and picture quality? Should they start a petition?
Also, we demand an explanation of the future of EF-S lens (since

Who cares, seriously. Would you put the kit lens on a 1D Mk II ? Sensor size is different on the 1D line and the 1Ds.

You have ONLY heard from Nikon with their D70 preannoument at this point. This isn't hard to understand. If Canon does follow through with their rumored 10D update (8MP, lower price) then that D70 is going to look quite different to people.

This is the root of the whole problem here. You don't need to defend your purchase, there is nothing wrong with it. It was the best camera out at it's price point when you bought it, period. If you thought things would never change, then your going to have a long year.

It's exactly this "why-bother" attitude of yours that keeps Canon dreaming for aother while until it's too late!

It's a mutual gain here! Canon will be branded as a company that listens to its users and respond to competition.

Selectable focus mode means being able to select the focusing mode. ie. between one-shot and AI-servo.

Rather than having the 300D to decide when to engage AI-servo or to prevent 300D to engage it incorrectly (ie. when recomposing), slectable focus mode is essential.

ps. and good for you to stand up and be heard!~

Yeah, and what's funny is that they probably won't make any change except the firmware to un-cripple it...

done for you by launching the D70. Relax, if the Canon engineers/marketeers are sweating, it won't be because of our petitions.

IMO, I think Canon's liklely response is to drop the price rather than upgrade the features of the 300D.

Cheers

But how far can it drop the price without killing its P&S market - which is still, by far, the dominant money-generating machine for Canon?

And having a price war between two market giant is the last thing Canon want.

When I bought the Rebel in the first few days of October 2003, I did so after about 6 months of deliberation as to what I wanted as an upgrade from my Fuji 602, which I was outreaching. I wanted a dSLR and I seriously considered all the models at the lower end of the price bracket. The 300d and Pentax *istD became front runners due to size and weight largely.

I researched the 300D for a good while, from before it hit the streets and read here what the people in the US were saying that got it first, looked at photos taken, downloaded the manual, read it front to back, took some test shots in the shop with my 602 and the Rebel side by side of the same thing. I made my purchase. I was fully informed as to its featureset and projected performance and I am happy.

If you didn't do the same and are now unhappy with the features of the 300D, why on earth did you buy it? It's not like we got features we didn't expect or not others we should have - it does exactly what it was billed to do and if you're not happy with that, it's respectfully, your own fault, you made the decision and purchase, Canon didn't force you to buy it.

I believe that Canon did put the consumer first by allowing me to buy the features I wanted for £500 pounds less than I thought I'd have to pay. I do not feel short changed.

Please don't take on the tone of someone who represents all 300D users and they're all disgruntled, you do not represent, or speak for, me. I'm happy with my decision to buy the camera and that it does what Canon led me to believe it would. My only real gripe is the misleading impression the overly bright LCD gives of your results. If I have a problem with that, I'll take it up with Canon myself, in my own name, thank you.

Canon ain't stupid, they've got a lot of people to buy the 300D and also buy a lot of lenses, if you have invested thousands in lenses I doubt you will sell all your kit just to get the few features that the D70 offers.

Canon are very good at pulling suprises out of the bag maybe we will see a 10D update which I would seriously consider, even if its a few hundred dollars or pounds more expensive of a Nikon equivilent it won't bother me because that will still be less than I would lose in selling all my lenses.

The only area Canon is going to lose out to is to pre DSLR owners who have a bunch of Nikon lenses in the cupboard, and quite a few of those have already bought the 300D.

Don't get me wrong if Canon upgrade the 300D I will be a customer for life showing that they care for the needs of the consumer but at the end of the day that dosn't make money.
