I am very new to SLR's/digital/photography in general.

The only light was from the candles.

Any thoughts/comments?

Thanks,
Mitch

i think you have it focused on the candles and the cake. the boy's face is out of focus a bit. you could try AE lock of the boy's face with pressing the * key.

not bad, but keep trying. =>

I like the picture and the facial expression particularly. I also really like the lighting in how only your subjects are illuminated. However, the focus seems to be on the cake/candles and not the face. When shooting with the 300D you should be aware of what focus point(s) you are using and make sure that the area you want to have in focus is the correct one. This is particularly true with the 50 1.8 lens because of the narrow depth of focus.

Thanks for the comments. I did not realize it, but I clearly did focus on the candles.

I have found the placement of the auto-focus points to be one of those intances where it's "easier said than done," especially in those shots that you take quickly, catching a moment.

I love the picture by the way. That expression is priceless.

Nothing wrong with the kid , but I find the focus exact where it belongs: on the candles. Everything in this pictures is about the cake and the candles.

If this was your intention: well done.
If it was coincidence: learn from it.

Mark.

(nice lens for $ 100, isn't it)

Definitely coincidence. Clearly from the replies it is a matter of taste whether I should have focused on the candles or my son. It was his 9th BD by the way. He was about to blow. The nice thing about the lens (besides the imagequality) is without the flash you can shoot a series very quickly.

I like the picture but IMHO if a smaller f stop were used to bring it all into focus it would be great. The out of focus face it just out of focus enough to make me feel like my eyes are OOF. Either the boy should be more OOF or in focus as well as the candles. But all in all a nice picture.

Like I said, I am new to SLR. Wouldn't a smaller f stop decrease the DOF? Did you mean smaller aperature/higher f stop? Not sure if there would have been enough light to use a reasonable shutter speed. Everything may have been out of focus :-)
